[Emotions: perky, curious, thoughtful, happy]

"Movie actress! She's been in all sorts of films, but the ones where she's in a bikini are the most popular," she snorted with giggles. "My dad adores her and says he's so lucky to have her. They're so cute together, and I'm glad we can be away from the paparazzi here. Well--most of the paparazzi."

Tiffany finished off the last of her muffin and answered with a hand hovering to cover her mouth, "Yes, I totally checked it! It was funny reading all the one-stars that were like, 'OMG, I can't believe the watering fountain sucks this bad!' For the entire college. And then other reviews were like, 'you can't walk on the grass? Seriously?'" She laughed out loud and shook her head.

Some of the Yelp reviews were sort of understandable, like the ones that said the schools had a 'snooty air' about them--whatever that meant--or the staff not letting students have private lives without them butting in and nosing about.

The academy on Manta Carlos wasn't like that, or so Tiffany thought.

"Weeeell, I don't know. I guess it's just because my friends are always going on about those two the most. Like, 'Oh my God you're such a great listener! Have you ever thought about being a therapist?'. So, stuff like that kind of gets you thinking." She paused and looked Kaz over thoughtfully.

"You seem like you would be...a mathematics major. Then you could go around being that cute teacher at a bunch of schools and like, solving a bunch of math problems and coming up with new theories and going to math conventions--do they have those? A bunch of mathematicians just get together and talk about equations and parallel lines and stuff?"

The more she talked, the more interested Kaz became.

Not because he found what she was saying to be particularly interesting. He was neutral on these topics of conversation at best and slightly bored at worst. While externally Kaz was nodding and smiling at all the appropriate times, looking just like anyone else engaged in conversation was, internally Kaz felt emptiness.

Well, what he actualyl felt was her emotions.

Which was still very, very weird, but he was beginning to think this might work out to his advantage.

"Oh," Kaz remarked, and then he ventured a question. "So is acting and psychology want you want to do, or just what you think would be fitting for you?"

There was no judgement or sarcasm in his voice. It was a question of genuine curiosity, not a verbal jab.

He listened to her assessment of him and smiled.

"I think I would like that," he said. And then, after another moment, he frowned and said, "Although I'm not sure i would like the mathcon. Can you imagine how picky everyone would be when it came time to give change for any purchase?"

Then he frowned and said, "Oh gosh, what do you think they would even sell at math cons?"

He laughed.

[Emotions: friendly, positive, energetic, thoughtful]

"No idea!" said Tiffany with the biggest, brightest smile that someone who hadn't figured out their future could have.

"I mean, they're both pretty interesting, aren't they? I'm a good therapist apparently, I've got the looks for acting..." She waved her hand in a sort of 'the list goes on' motion. "I can be anything I want to be! Eeexcept for a male model. I don't have the parts for that."

She snorted and shook her head and pushed the wave down. "Nooo, no, we've got totally different ideas! I'm talking about a mathematics convention. You go to this big fancy dinner at like Princeton or something and you sit down and suddenly all these old guys come by to give you a bunch of pens because--Oh my God!"

The time on her lock screen told Tiffany that she only had five minutes to get to her next class. Which was all the way across the campus. Her eyes flew back up to him and she gave him an apologetic grin.

While standing up she said, "Sorry to cut this short! I need to get to class." She moved to toss her muffin wrapper in the trash and hastily returned, clicking away on her phone. "I had a lot of fun talking with you, Kaz!" Her eyes glew gold for a couple seconds, and when they faded she turned her phone around and wiggled the screen at him.

"We should totally text each other! Do you want my number?"

Kaz was weighing the merits of a math convention when TIffany sprang up.

For a moment, he wondered if she'd finally realized that he could feel her emotions. He thought about apologizing, but, oddly enough, he wasn't entirely sorry. Instead, she explained about her need to go to class, and Kaz nodded.

She offered to text.

Perfect.

It was always easier if someone made the first move.

Kaz nodded and took out his notebook from his bag. He jotted his number down onto the paper in careful, even handwriting and passed it to her. He managed to do this all fairly quickly.

"Sure," he said. "That would be great. It would be nice to know someone going through college. Hope you don't mind if I'm asking you pointers."

He smiled and waved. "Good luck! You'd best hurry."

This was great. Kaz's mind was already working, spinning forward with new ideas.

Tiffany swept up the paper with his number on it and nodded. Kaz was a nice guy and Tiffany was always excited to make friends, and he didn't seem to be entirely too bothered by her reverse empathy. She'd met too many people who were revolted by the fact that they could read her emotions, to the point that some had even attacked her for it. Kaz, however, either didn't notice or pretended not to--he'd make a great friend, she was sure.

"I'll totally help you out if you need it! See you later, Kaz!" She flashed him a smile, threw her hand up in a wave, turned, and ran out the doors.

The moment she was out of range, Kaz's connection to her reverse empathy was severed.

A few minutes after that, he received a text with several nerdy glasses emojis.
