Félix thought it would be a grave mistake to let her keep him there, even for a second longer. He thought it would be a grave mistake to turn around and face Agnés, tears streaming down his own face to match hers. He thought it'd be a grave mistake to listen to Agnés. He was right about all three, and yet it was a mistake he might have made a thousand times over.
The arm she grabbed twisted around. Félix's hand held her own arm, and he exhaled with bated breath. “I don't want to leave either,†he whispered. Félix glanced back at the door, then to Agnés. He could step out and end everything. He could save everyone...but himself. Or, he could stay for the night. If it would really be just for the one night. He could be back before Konishi noticed. But he could also lose his chance to have any real closure with Agnés.
In turn, Félix hated himself for deciding this. But it was his decision, and above all were two facts. He hated Konishi, that was one. Second, he cherished Agnés. Maybe it was some unhealthy, romantic predisposition in his jazz-playing, French heart, but passion won over reason.
He turned back to the front door, and locked it. Félix looked back at Agnés. “You won't be alone. Not tonight.â€Â
Félix was still crying, but at least he could manage a smile.
