Never Forgotten

It was the middle of the night, well beyond the hour most students and everyday people alike would fall asleep. It was also well beyond the hour anyone would expect a visitor, but Agnés would experience a rather different situation. Even deep in her isolated home from everyone else, she would find someone knocking on her door at an ungodly hour.

It was Félix. There was no expression of happiness on his face, not even from the memories of last time he was here. Those memories turned sour, the beginning of a betrayal of not one, but two people. One he cared deeply for, the other who held him in her bondage. Félix was all alone on his side of things, but it was exactly what he deserved.

But now, he needed very much to reach out to someone and set things right. If he could. If she would let him.

Félix was empty handed at the door. He figured any sort of gift would be a pale effort and an insult to the horror Agnés went through. Félix imagined his very being there would be an insult enough, there was no need to aggravate it with cheap apologies.

There was no warning he would arrive. He did not want to scare Agnés off, or enable her into running away. But all the same, Félix desperately needed to talk to her.

Agnés slept with a book draped over her face in the main room, she needed to study, but also much more wanted to sleep. When the knock on the door came Agnés woke with a jump, the book falling from her face and making a thud on the floor. She could feel the angst coming through the door, though no anger so hopefully it was safe, she further wondered just what type of robber knocked first. She scratched the back of her head as she walked, she'd finally managed to get a haircut to clean the strange cut that Konishi had given her.

Agnés gave herself a quick look over to make sure she was presentable. A white tank top and a pair of blue boy's shorts and not much else, but it would do. She took a moment to brush down a few stray hairs.

Agnés flipped the switch for the patio light, and slowly cracked the door sticking her head out of it. "Hello?" It was three long heart beats before Félix's face registered. On the third she could feel her heart ripping itself in two, part of it leaping and part of it plummeting.

"W-why are you here?" Agnés knew she should have slammed the door in his face, but all that she managed was to stand up straight. She glanced around. "Is she here?" Agnés was sudden stricken with the horror that her home might be burned to the ground in the next few minutes.

“She's not- no, she doesn't know at all,” Félix frowned, very quick to try and assure Agnés that she was in no danger. At least, not in physical danger. Félix was more than capable on his own in ruining her night.

Once he felt she wasn't about to close the door on him, Félix pleaded his case for coming. It was some of the hardest words he'd ever said out of his mouth. Part of him thought it'd be better to go away and not look back. The other part of him agreed, and thought Félix stupid for following through.

He remained in his spot though, not daring to approach Agnés until she felt safe enough to let him inside. If ever. “I want to talk. There's – a lot happened and we need to talk. Please.”

It was likely the only chance he'd have to talk to her. He couldn't run out in the middle of the night every day, and the more he tried the more likely Konishi would suspect something. Worse yet, she might be clever enough not to let on, and opt to follow him right to Agnés' home. As far as Félix was concerned, he had one shot in making amends with Agnés.

Agnés didn't slam the door, though part of her knew that she should have. She listened as Félix spoke. She let her gaze wondering into the dark night as he spoke, finally when he was done with his plea only one word managed to cross over a cold pair of lips. "Fine." Her gaze hadn't returned to him, she was still staring at the void of the night, her tone was flat. Slowly she looked back to Félix to see what it was that he had to say. She didn't move from the door way to let him in, instead letting the mosquitoes have at the both of them.

From time to time her gaze glanced about, not entirely sure that she believed him about Konishi not being near.

He was happy enough Agnés agreed to talk, but it was clear it was only out of courtesy. Not only did her tone go sour, but she didn't step aside to let him in. It was quite clear where they stood, in that sense. Félix shifted nervously, trying to find the words to bring this about.

“I'm sorry for what happened. I can't really say anything to make that better. It was horrible.”

Félix shifted again, rubbing his arm with his other hand. It hurt even to think about it, and to think of Konishi. Her very name scared him. “I'm scared of her, Agnés. I'm scared she'll kill me if I try to leave her. I don't like her, at all.”

Konishi was a monster, a monster that enjoyed making Félix feel like a monster as well. He hated her, and everything she did to him. But he couldn't do a thing about it, except quietly defy her like this.

“Please, you're the only one I can talk to about her. You know what she's like. It'd mean so much to me.”

"What was... what am I to you Félix?" As Agnés asked she could already feel her resolve to keep him on the doorstep already falling away. "She cut my head off, and you only 'don't like her'? No one else has ever done that to me before." She paused for a moment. "A convenient tool that can't be broken by her, so no matter what she does, no foul since there was never any threat of lasting harm?" She looked up at him a half desperate look on her face.

With that she couldn't find it in herself to leave him standing outside any longer. She stepped away from the door, and turned walking into her house, not inviting him with her words, but leaving the door open that if he wanted he could come in with out any resistance. She sighed looking at the mess that had already started to pile up since the last time he had been there. A stack of empty cup o' ramen noodle cups were at one edge of her coffee table. She sat in the middle of her couch, crossing her legs, watching what Félix would do, not really leaving him any room on her chesterfield.

“No, it's...” Félix grimaced. It was hard to use the words he truly felt about Konishi. He despised her. He despised what she did to Agnés and himself. But moreso he feared her. Feared her to the point of being subservient. She could cut a head clean off. One day it wouldn't be one that could regenerate.

“You're not a tool, Agnés! You're not anyone's plaything!” Félix burst out. As the silence came down, Agnés quietly let him inside. He could see the mess in her place. She didn't have time make an effort to clean, but very likely she wouldn't have bothered either way. As she sat on the couch, Félix sat on the floor across from her. He had to look up to her.

“You're my friend, Agnés. You're... you're more than that, I promise.” Félix's voice faded from its old indignation. He was pleading again, “But she is... in control of my life. I have family here, Konishi. And other people she knows about. People she will hurt to get to me.”

“I don't know what to do. I just... wanted to say I'm sorry, first.”

She looked at him, her shoulders slouched, not really wanting him to talk, not wanting him to stop talking. "So..." she had to look away from him as she spoke. "Is this my Dear Jane letter?" She didn't look back to him immediately instead letting her gaze just sit where it was for a few long minutes.

Slowly she managed to drag her vision to her crossed legs in front of her. Still though she didn't look up at him. "Now that you've said your apologizes, what are you going to do now?" She managed to take just the smallest of peaks at him before her gaze returned to her legs. "Are you going to go back to her now, and spend the rest of the night at her place?" She couldn't bring herself to look up at him, her words already cutting into her own soul.

It was a good question. Where would Félix go from here? Would he go back to Konishi, despite what he claimed were his feelings? The truth was painful, but any decision was a painful one. For Félix, it was a matter of weighing the risks with his feelings.

He could love Agnés, and hate Konishi. And he did. But four other people were at risk, at the very least. People Konishi knew and could find, people she could hurt very badly. Then there was Agnés herself. Félix knew if he tried to break up with her and run away, she would immediately go for Agnés. Félix couldn't do that.

“I don't want to go back to her,” Félix muttered. His eyes stared at his own feet in shame. “But I can't run away from her. I'm not strong enough. You... you know that.”

Félix stood up, trying to hide his eyes underneath his white hair. Maybe it was a mistake to come here. Maybe he'd rather have her hate him than break their hearts like this. All Félix could argue was that it was for the best.

“If you can forgive me, maybe when I find the strength. But I just can't. I'm sorry. Good bye.” He struggled not to sob. He slowly exhaled, struggling to keep his face straight as he walked himself to the door.

As he talked she could feel the tears start to run down her face. She was able to keep her breathing under control, but her shoulders shuttered all the more for it. As she heard him standing up, her gaze shot up for the first time to watch him start towards her door.

She couldn't remember how it happened, but she was standing behind him, as they were in the doorway of her home, not inside and not outside. Her hand holding onto the sleeve of his shirt, he could pull away if he truly wanted to, but he would have to be aware of her presence.

She was looking up to him, the tears never stopping, but she wore her happiest face and with the sweetest voice she had. "I don't want you to leave." She could feel a fracture in her mask begin to form, but she wouldn't, couldn't, let it break away now. "I want you to stay, even if we have to be strangers when the sun rises. I just..." She paused needing to collect herself for a moment. "I don't want to be alone tonight."

With ever word that she spoke she could feel daggers stabbing into her heart. She hated herself for what she was asking of him, but she couldn't stop herself. For her though this was the only thing that she wanted.
