James Logan

James would appear from darkness, right outside the office, he'd been considering reaching out to her. A teacher dealing with artifacts and magical history, after two years of being here he wanted to finally track down some answers.

Knocking on the door he'd open it and poke his head in, she'd get a glimpse of fading darkness from his teleport. "Hello ma'am," he'd say, stepping fully into the room, closing the door behind him, "I hope I'm not interrupting anything but...well...I wanted to talk, simple as that."

Pulling the box cube from his pocket he'd he'd roll it between his fingers a bit. "My name's James Logan, I heard about the areas you specialize in, magic artifacts and such, its...something I've been interested in for a long time now."

Asteria might have made a terrible mistake.

After being gone for a year and a half, she had missed working in a classroom setting. Or so she thought. First day back, and the paperwork involved was exhausting. Having to write up tests and quizzes, planning homework and private meetings. But she had no intention of letting anything distract her from her work, no matter how tedious it would be. Then a student appeared through some form of dark magic. New plan: screw paperwork, talk with student, deal with problems later.

"Greetings, Mr. Logan." She acknowledged, looking at the student a little more intently. James Logan, if she remembered correctly, was one of her students in her History of Magic class. He seemed like a bright student, but it had only been a few days and things could easily change as the semester went on. "I'm glad to hear that you have an interest in magical archaeology, but I imagine you have something else you want to discuss based on your fidgeting." She smiled, staring at the cube in the boy's fingers. Quickly activating her monocle's scanning ability, she would wave her hand towards the chair across from her on the other side of the desk while the magic item began its assessment.

"Please feel free to sit."

Her scanning ability would pick up on a few things, for James it would pick up that he was vaguely fae and has a noticeably large amount of shadow magic in him, with the cube she'd pick up on the containment spell that once held sway over it.

Taking the seat, he'd hum in thought for just a moment, "well.....a few years back...I stumbled onto this," he'd say, setting the small cube on her desk, she'd be able to see the carvings in it, an incredibly ancient language and magic system, she'd perhaps only notice a few things similar to other ancient languages. "It held...well..this," he'd sprout a shadow tentacle and gesture to it, "or at least the entity that grants this power, a shadow being that latched onto me when I touched the box."

He'd explain it all relatively calmly, it was all just a part of his life anymore, "the school has never really been able to figure out where it came from, and neither has anyone at the museum, I work there. So, I thought perhaps you could take a look."

'A possible Fae with a large amount of shadow magic... That doesn't quite add up.'

Asteria remained quiet as the young man explained the origin of the shadow magic, the mysterious cube, and the apparent lack of knowledge or awareness from her colleagues on discovering the origins of both. Although Asteria was not a fan of deities or blind faith, she briefly considered offering a small prayer to some higher being for this new curiosity to explore. She glanced down at the cube and continued her scan on the cube, attempting to cross-reference the design and material with anything she had seen in the museum. Having lived as long as she had and worked as hard as she had, Asteria had scanned and cataloged just about everything that lay within, so she would hopefully be able to find something that could help solve the mystery.

While the monocle continued working, the witch glanced up to look at James. Giving him a quick once over look, her lips tightened into a small frown in a moment before relaxing into a faint smile. "Mr. Logan, you've presented a very curious task for me. You say that even the museum was unable to ascertain the cube's origin? I'm glad you've brought this to my attention, then. I will need more information on where you found this," she points down to the cube, "As well as your abilities as a whole. I also promise, if you so desire, to keep all matters related to this confidential."

"I also have to ask, what do you do at the museum exactly?"

"I'm afraid there isn't much for me to tell," he'd say as they discussed the cube, "I found it in an abandoned home it my old city, it was just sitting on a shelf." That was all true, though he did leave out information about him being an ex-thief and many other unpleasant details he didn't like sharing.

Pulling out a folded piece of paper, he'd slide it to her, "I did write down its address and the name of the city if you wanted to take a look, school found the owner died years ago, he collected art and artifacts, the cube was forgotten I guess." She'd find many unpleasant things about his old city, it was a hellish place with a large homeless population and a scary high crime rate.

"I work part time there," he'd say with a small smile, "mostly helping with paperwork and organize things, a few have helped with research a little, but I have school so I can't really dive in to deep into the long term stuff since my time there is always limited." He did love the museum, learning the magical history of the world, something most thought was myth.

Asteria carefully took the slid note and glanced at the name written down and raised a brow.

Thomas Forrester.

The name was definitely familiar. Based on Mr. Logan's description, that was a house that the Veil had been contacted about. The house had held quite a few magical items, some of which were quite dangerous for those in the narrow reality. She had to catalog some very unique tools, but the fact that this box didn't seem to be a part of that collection or matched anything in the deceased's collection. There did seem to be a few pieces in the museum archives that were more closely related to the box, but she'd have to delve into that at a future time.

"I see, Mr. Logan. So you have an interest in magical research, then? Not everyone who works at the museum gets to assisting the research team. Is this a hobby or do you see yourself doing this professionally?" Asteria grinned, taking a swig from a coffee mug that sat on her desk. "I know you're still young but if you are, I may be able to assist you."

He'd give a smile, the box came with unpleasant memories so it was nice to move onto more pleasant matters. "It is something I want to go into, I love the museum, love learning about the magical world," he'd hum in thought, "it's all like a world between the cracks, all the secrets the rest of world doesn't know about."

"I'll admit I'm...behind on school, I didn't get to go to school before coming here," more unpleasant memories but it was things she needed to know, "I've been here around two years though so I'm catching up," he was clever, bit it would take time.

Asteria couldn't help but grin at the young man's answer. It wasn't often she met someone so young who actually had passion for magical history and was invested in researching it. She gently reached into a drawer under her desk and pulled out an envelope and an oddly shaped sticker. "Pardon me one moment, will you?" She asked politely before typing something quickly on her keyboard, and printing out a document on her little printer. With movements that seemed almost rehearsed, she quickly signed the bottom, folded the note neatly, slid it within the envelope, and slapped the sticker over the flap before setting that off to the side of her desk.

"I wouldn't worry too much about school; you seem like a clever boy and you'll be fine. People come from all kinds of places. I didn't get my education until I was well past a few centuries, so cherish the opportunity." Asteria gave a nod as if she had spoken words of wisdom. "Is there a specific area of expertise you'd focus on if you had the opportunity to do so? Any country whose magical nature would catch your eye?"

She paused. "If you have any questions for me or find me being too inquisitive, please feel free to say something. I enjoy learning but not at the cost of another's suffering."

James would raise an eyebrow at the typing and the paper but remained silent, he'd ask about it later. Shadow wanted to know now, but James mentally told him to be patient, and reassured him that the teacher would be willing to help.

"Sumer," he'd say without hesitation, "we know so little of them, but the roots of much started with them." He'd read about them whenever he could, "the deluge, the world before it, magic there, from their gods, we know so little about it, it's an entire section of magical history that's been most untapped."

Looking to the cube, he'd tap his finger on it, "when I first went to the museum I saw a few Sumerian artifacts and they felt.....familiar, to Shadow, to me, not enough to be what we're looking for, but as close as we've ever seen." He'd look at her, "I don't where he came from...don't know where I came from....after two years on this island....we're ready for answers, we don't want to live in ignorance about our own existence anymore."

"Sumer? Interesting. That's a field the museum has been working on for a while, but are lacking in committed researchers." She sighed, leaning back into her comfy office chair. "Among other things." The research team within the museum was by no means a large team, but they were a dedicated crew. But with all of the alternate dimensions, aliens, and the staggering amount of cultures to wade through, not many had focused on Sumer. Most would add to the collection then scamper off to the latest discovery.

"You say you don't know your own origin?" Asteria sat up straight at the mention of that, brows furrowed. There were quite a few orphans on Manta Carlos; she was very aware how many came in after their parents were slain, had vanished, or had just straight up abandoned their kid. It was a shame that magic had to be kept so secret with all of the benefits it could provide to society, but such is life. "Well, that's unfortunate. I'm sure you're aware that you have fae ancestry, at least. If not... well, yeah. You have fae blood. As for your shadowy friend, I'm sure with time I can help you ascertain his origin as well. Although you work at the museum, I'm sure not everyone has taken a glance at that cube of yours. I have a few contacts there as well who I can direct you to, if you desire."
