Name: Melli Florstedt
Grade : 12th
Age: 17
Birthday: December 24
Gender: Female
Category: Student
Class: High School

Appearance Description: Melli has pale skin tinged with yellow, wide gray eyes and thin blonde hair that falls down her back. She cannot walk, and moves around in a wheelchair. She is generally thin, and could be best described as “fragile” looking. Her generally polished demeanor fails to conceal the fact that she is not in the best physical state, even barring the fact that she is in a wheelchair. If she were to stand, sher height would be at about 5’4”, and she is underweight, weighing 28 kg.

Personality Description: Melli is acts regally and knows how to keep her distance from other people. Most of the time she is quiet and keeps to herself. She can be very friendly and cheerful amongst agreeable people, but she never raises her voice or shares much about herself. However, she frequently has flashbacks and panic attacks, and would need a little nudge from someone to connect with reality again, if she doesn’t make it back herself. She sometimes would stare intently at nothing in particular, a frightened expression on her face. This might be coupled with trembling and hyperventilating. This can be triggered by the prospect of painting and visual art, though it can happen at any time.

Powers: Despair on Canvas: Melli can picture one moment of a nearby incident perfectly, and then paint it subconsciously, in stunning detail. She can paint the entire scene, even if she has never seen the faces of the people involved. She can even rotate her view and paint the scene again, from another angle. The only catch is that she can only paint scenes that include sadness or despair, so she is stuck with painting everything from breakups to funerals to murders. The sadder or more intense a scene is, the further away Melli would be able to detect it.

Biography:

(WARNING: The following biography contains mentions of abuse and blood. If you would rather not read about these topics, read no further.)

Melli was born to Rene and Ilse Florstedt in Linz, Austria. Rene was a banker, and Ilse was a painter. From an early age, Melli was taught to paint, and gained a deep interest in art. She had won art competitions for preschoolers and primary schoolers. She was called “Ilse Florstedt’s girl”, as she resembled her mother strongly.
When Melli turned 5, Ilse died in a car accident. Rene was distraught, and wandered the house for days, crying out Ilse’s name. Melli was equally saddened, but her father’s behavior disturbed her. After her mother’s death, her father was never the same. It was as though he couldn’t separate Ilse from Melli.

Soon, Rene started coming down hard on Melli’s painting. She had to win every competition, and every painting had to be just as Ilse used to paint. He started beating Melli and using physical punishments to coerce her to “paint better,” as well as to simply let off steam. She was also forced to act like Ilse, composed at all times, with a half-smile on her face. Failure to do so meant no food and a beating.
This abuse lasted for years, and nights usually ended with Melli trembling in fear, or unable to walk properly because her arms and legs were caned until they bled. Far from improving her painting skills, her treatment caused her arms to shake every time she held a pencil or paintbrush, and she could no longer draw anything recognizable. The authorities were called a few times, but Rene explained it away with a loud television, and by hiding Melli in her room and making her pretend to sleep.

During her abuse, she found out that the only thing she could paint was her own abuse, in disturbing detail. Every other night, she would wake up and try to paint something, and ending up painting her beatings in full detail. This realization horrified her, and she desperately tried to draw anything else. It didn't work; she ended up painting her neighbors’ divorce, a local car accident, three scenes from an ongoing civil war in another country, and other scenes of despair. These were not good enough for Rene, as Ilse usually painted bright, happy paintings. Melli was still beaten and starved for these works, and most of them were thrown in the fireplace.

The abuse lasted until she was 12. One night, Rene beat her on the back, until she collapsed. The authorities were called one last time, and Rene wasn’t able to conceal Melli in time. He was arrested, and Melli was sent to the hospital. Her vertebrae and spinal cord had taken extensive injury, and she was declared a paraplegic for life.
Melli was taken into a distant relative’s care, and had frequent therapy sessions. Though she had recovered from most of the abuse, she never was able to paint or draw anything again, other than scenes of despair. She tries very desperately to “paint for herself,” just as her therapist suggested, but it never worked. Fortunately, Melli got an invitation to Starlight Academy, and thinking that a change of pace might be good for her, convinced herself and her therapist that she was stable enough to attend.
