After leaving the ballroom, Sabriel had made his way back to his dormitory, sullen and silent. It was clear a piece of him had fractured tonight, but he had finally been given the strength to reach the solution he needed. Making his way into the bathroom, Sabriel opened his medicine cabinet and stared at the bottle with a look of defeat and acceptance, and finally popped the lid off.
So this is it.
He didn't feel the need to write a note, or to make any sort of explanation as to why he was doing this. It wasn't like anyone would care; Carta would move on and his aunt would get her life and independence back instead of constantly worrying about him. This would be good for everyone.
Filling a glass of water, Sabriel went to work swallowing each pill in the bottle, feeling nauseous and lightheaded as each slipped down his throat.
Soon enough, his lids began to feel heavy, and Sabriel collapsed to the floor, first to his knees before falling completely. Lids closing, Sabriel relinquished his hold on consciousness without a fight.

There was light - bright, excruciatingly white and all around him. Sabriel squeezed his eyes shut tighter, making a soft groaning sound as his hands clenched around a soft material that seemed to be covering him. Where was he? He... he didn't remember anything... it was like everything had been wiped clean.
Slowly opening his eyes, Sabriel returned to the world, pale as ever, his eyes appearing weak and glazed over. Dark, gray circles blotched the area under his eyes, along with his knuckles, and he slowly turned his head on the pillow.
Oh... right.
So... it hadn't worked? Then who had found him and tried to save him?
He didn't even care...
Sighing, Sabriel closed his eyes again, pulling weakly at the blankets. He just wanted to go back to sleep.
