As he said this, their food came. Two big orders of chicken tempura and two sodas.
"She looks young." She whispered to him. "So no sake. Don't be a bad influence, Lae."
Laetus laughed. "Fair enough... Oh, by the way, she also really wanted some sushi."

Maddie wondered what they were whispering about. She heard 'sake', so she had a pretty good guess. Was Laetus trying to order her sake? Then she was dragged into the conversation.
Luckily, Maddie knew her sushi well enough to pick an order off the top of her head.
"Unagi, please," she said and smiled politely at the waitress.
Again she waited until they were alone to turn and stare at Lae. "What about sake?"

"Oh, I usually get sake, not soda. She made the executive decision to not give booze to a minor, and told me to be a good influence."

It was easy to forget about the age gap at the fair, but then it was there again. Things always felt bigger when you were a teenager.

"I actually don't mind it," Maddie answered, using chopsticks herself. "My," she paused as if searching for the correct word, "parents let me try it once at a restaurant. Beer too, but I think beer tastes gross. I don't know why you would want to drink it."

Laetus nodded. "I agree with you there. It tastes suuuuuper nasty." He put a little soy sauce on the side and dipped his food in before taking another bite. He ate a bit faster than her, but seeing her take it slowly, he tried his best to take his time as well.
