"How old...." Aimouryllice thought the question over, wondering how old she would be in human terms. "We count diff-rent. And, we live long time. I am young for Vox Somni, but I am old for humans. I am 'gramma', but I am 'teen'. You are know what I say? Is know? You..." She gave up on the grammar for that one. "How old is you? Are you. ?"

The moment he started explaining some English to her, she became very quiet and focused on what he was saying. Ohh, so the human word 'much' was for objects and nouns, and the word 'very' was for descriptive words--adjectives. "Yes. Thank you."

She wondered how she might practice using the word in a sentence, then said, "Thievenne, your voice are--is very pretty. Is most nice I hear in human structure of education." 'Structure of education' was her favorite set of words ever. It was so sophisticated and she spent so much time perfecting it when she was with her Tokyo human, Robert.

"Number is symbols on doors? Yes. You give your 'oom numbah', or I give my 'oom numbah'."

Aimouryllice wondered what 'this' was, but then realized that he probably meant the whole sleeping in the snow thing, which was really stupid of him to do. He was really okay with being treated like a newborn babe?

"Snow...Snow? Is 'very' pretty? Snow has no colors. Is white, like me. I do not know...if I like. Maybe, soon. Why you are like snow?"

Ven laughed.

It was short and weak compared to his normal robust laughter, but Ven was cold, and he was tired, and the closer they got to their destination the wobblier things became. His vision was starting to double and Ven could see a different set of woods behind one set of that double vision. He pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Yeah, I know what you mean," he closed his eyes. "I'm young, a teenager by human standards."

He was surprised by her compliment, so much so that it took him a moment to realize what she was trying to do. He nodded and said, "Thank you" and then "Yeah! That's it, you're getting it."

Ven had to think for a long moment his room number.

"I think it's 17B," he said. "It's the one on the second floor, past the fireplace. There's a picture of this old guy with a beard like this-"

Ven demonstrated the beard with a hand motion, then shoved his trembling fingers back into his pockets again.

They were so close now. He could be warm again soon! Ven picked up the pace as much as he could through the dizziness.

"I don't know," he said, trying to explain why he thought snow was beautiful. "I guess it's because, before I knew there was magic and vox somni and starlight academy, the only kind of magic I had was when I would go to sleep and wake up in the morning and everything was white! It felt like magic."

It sounded silly now that he said it aloud. But, he figured, "I guess you really didn't get to experience snow beneath the water, huh? But you probably saw many amazing things that would seem like magic to me."

There was that strange cawing sound again. Humans kept making that sound, but she never understood what it meant. Was it another one of those 'emotions'? She tried to match it with one of the very few emotions she had been taught, but she didn't even understand the emotions in the first place so that was no use. In fact, she would've grasped onto his arm in a valiant attempt to keep him steady, but she had very little idea that he was having trouble unless he stumbled. Human emotions just didn't come easily to her.

"You are big baby to my people," she said casually, thinking about the measly age of--what was it again? Human teens were....10-20 years? Between the first and second decade, which was a set of...Wow, confusing.

"Sev-en-teenbee..." Aimouryllice took a moment to sort that out in her head. 17B. B must have been B in the alphabet. 17...Was that 12? No, it didn't have the little hook on the end. She mentally went through her numbers from 1-20 and identified it as a 1-7. 10 plus 7. 17-B. Got it.

She watched him mime something about his chin in relation to a 'beard'. Were she knowledgeable of human emotions, she would've shown amusement. "O-K. I go to you, soon. You go to me, too?"

"My room number is..." The little lady pulled a slip of paper from another fold in her kimono and stared at it long and hard. Then, she showed it to him. It read 3C. "Three-C. Is right? You go."

Aimouryllice pondered what he was saying. Was the snow not always there? It magically appeared while you were sleeping? Maybe it was a curse. She wondered about the magical properties of this fluffy cold white substance.

"No, snow not in water. At home, we have...'co-ruhl'. Coral. Coral and ocean plants very pretty and very color. Color...Color..." The 'ful' ending escaped her memory. "There are many colors. More than human structures. More colors...than humans can name. Big, and very color. Big plants, big fish...Plants, and fish very color, too. Big structures in the water. A library...Library is my 'favorite'. Read much in library."

"I show you, soon, home of my people--" Aimouryllice paused, remembering that her home had been taken from her. She didn't even know where it was from here; it would require days, weeks of traveling through the oceans in search of it. "...I draw for you. If want."

"big baby, youre like a young grandmother," Ven mumbled under his breath, but there was some good humor starting to slip into it now that they were back on the edge of the academy grounds.

He felt like he'd never feel warm again, so the first thing Ven was going to do was to crawl into a nice, warm bath. Or maybe not. Maybe he'd just go straight to bed without leaving his body someplace weird.

His vision doubled again and he forced himself to stay in his own body as best as he could.

"Yeah," he said. "Come visit me. Just...not tonight. I'm going to try to sleep. Do you...uhh...do you sleep?" he asked.

If Ven could dream, he'd dream of he coral reefs she was describing.

'I'd like to see it," he said. 'Please do. Paint it, I mean."

He wondered if she was a good painter. He wondered if maybe, if he could stomach a few afternoons with this frustrating fish lady, if she'd teach him how to paint if he'd help her with his English.

Ven yawned.

"Thank you for helping me get back," he said. He reached one of his frozen hands out towards her and said, "Did anyone introduce you to the handshake?"

"I have no children of children," Aimouryllice said in response to his grandmotherly comment. If she understood human family units correctly, grandmothers were those who have given birth to they who have given birth? Well, she'd never given birth once, let alone given birth to someone who had given birth. Her duties were not that of childbearing just yet; she was too young and still had much to learn.

"Yes. I sleep. Vox Somni sleep in coral, but no coral here. I sleep in human 'bedh'. Is soft and dry. And weird. You are want me to sleep with you?" she asked. Her question was casual as always--or, rather, without much expression. Aimouryllice still hadn't gotten the hang of human emotions and inflections and intonations other than the rise of pitch at the end to indicate a question.

Did humans sleep with each other here? She only knew of one possible case of it, but then someone told her to figure out what the human word 'sex' meant. Still, she hadn't figured it out.

...Maybe 'sex' was a synonym for sleep! Aimouryllice was very proud of her intelligence.

Aimouryllice corrected her offer to show off her knowledge and grand vocabulary, "You are want me to sex with you?"

"Thank you." She automatically paused at the extension of his hand. Wait? For what? She stared at the hand, then turned her gaze up to his. "Hand-shake?" she repeated after him. "What is, that?"

Ven opened the door to the school and held it open for her while they finished their conversation. He bathed in the warmth that came flowing out of the school, relieved with the idea that

Ven was doing okay when she asked if he wanted her to sleep with him. He figured, given her lack of English skills, that she meant it innocently.

Then, she asked if he wanted to do the sex and Ven's face turned scarlet. His eyes widened and his mouth opened and he gaped like a fish.

Okay, that wasn't innocent. Did she know what she was asking? Oh god, Ven hadn't really done anything like that before, and while she was nice he wasn't sure if he really wanted to do something like that and--

"A handshake is when uh," Ven said, but he was still flustered, and now he was getting dizzy, his head was spinning, his vision doubled and--

Ven passed out.

His body went rigid suddenly, tensing like it'd been hit by a gunshot. It dropped to the ground and plopped onto the floor of the entryway, sliding a bit on the stone and messing up the rug that was there for students to wipe their soggy shoes on.

Ven's wolf shape materialized in his bedroom.

The last thing he'd been thinking about was how small his bed was. There's no way two of them would have fit in it.

Ven's wolf stood in the bed and he gave a huge exhale.

That was awkward.

————————
Cabel Sokol was heading into the school when he caught a familiar and unfamiliar sight.

By caught he meant tripped over and by familiar side he meant Ven's body sprawled out in the doorway. There was another person standing near Ven, so when Cabel picked himself up off the floor, he sighed and said, "Were you baby-sitting Moon Moon? Thanks for keeping an eye on this kiddo. I'll get him back to the dorms, that's where I'm going."

Cabel reached his arms down, lifted Ven up beneath the armpits, and dragged him down the hall.

Aimouryllice a'Phoche walked through the open door and then watched as the person she was escorting just collapsed and died. She stared down at Thievenne, inwardly panicking and looking around in hopes that there was a healer nearby and maybe they could revive him because she really didn't mean to hurt him by offering to sleep with him--

She watched as some other human came by and just...picked Thievenne up and dragged him away.

What.

What just happened.

...Aimouryllice was a murderer.

She was hungry for fish.
