Manta Carlos City was something rather unique as compared to any other city on Earth. Despite its relatively smaller size, Manta Carlos was the only place on the planet that had a significant portion of its population dedicated to the welfare of the supernatural populous. Of course, mages and other beings of all types inhabited the world, but no doubt the vast majority of them were centered in and around the island.

To keep their abilities sated, the world had helped build the school, and funded it to keep the supernatural from causing problems. It was a hugely discriminatory practice to be sure...but frankly, this wasn't quite as bad as past racism on the planet. Certain groups and individuals did, and still do pose a threat to each other, and the world was not quite ready for the whole superpower thing to get out and about.

Paradox was still a huge factor, even here. Aurora was fully aware of it.

The world was simply not ready.

But that didn't mean the supernaturals couldn't have any fun, or practice...in fact, quite the opposite. In recent days, the city had opened up a new training facility of sorts for the lot of the academy and surrounding areas to let off some steam, like any new piece of technology, Aurora had to try it; even if she didn't know quite what she was doing.

Aurora had arrived at the room with a duffel bag full of just about everything...staff in hand, hair done up in meatballs, and wearing less robes and more form-fitting clothing instead. The room itself was made up of something of a grid, no doubt holographic emitters and other assorted technical knick-knacks that Aurora was familiar with...to an extent. Trying to get it to work on the other hand was something a bit different. The mage stared at the panel, noticing several different options, but nothing really set in stone or intuitive. She was great with engineering...but computing was something she was lacking unfortunately.

"Level seven...what in the world..."

"Level seven active."

"Wait, what?"

Aurora's temporal sense kicked in, the spidey-sense like rote that activated whenever something was about to try and kill her. And try it did. A small drone appeared in the far corner with a rifle, and before it could get a shot off, she had whipped around with a P220 handgun, and shot the drone in the head.

"Terminate program!"

Her heart was racing. 120+ years of combat experience, but this was something a bit different...something Aurora wasn't quite used to.

"I seriously hope this is not what they meant by killer app."

Aurora sighed once. She was going to need someone who actually knew how to work this thing.

No. William said, crossing his arms at his chest and giving Spirit a black lock.

You're going. the wolf creature growled, bearing his teeth while lowering his body so he could jump at William at any time, should it be necessary.

I don't want to. the boy answered petulantly, immediately hating himself for it.

Doesn't matter. Spirit growled again, snapping his teeth at the boy. William look at him for the longest moment, before sighing and dropping his shoulders. Seriously, though, why? he asked, kicking an invisible stone at the road.

Because it's a good way to kill something without actually killing someone. Spirit said, relaxing his body, as William dragged his feet in the direction of the newly opened training room.

You do realise that that is no fun, right? William sighed again, dragging his fingers through his hair as he opened to door and entered the room. The point of fighting is... Oh, well, look, somebody's already here, can I go now?

Aurora leaned over and stared at the panel somewhat, as if trying to make it magically do what she wanted it to do. Of course, that was in the realm of the virtual adepts, something of which she was definitely not. She lifted a finger as if to touch the terminal again, but then going with her better judgment, realize that she would probably just spark more things out to kill her. Not that she couldn't handle herself, but causing wonton destruction wasn't exactly something that the mage cared for.

Frankly she was about to give up and just go back to the school. At least, not until Aurora heard a voice and saw a...wolf? That was highly convenient actually. Aurora waved over, hoping to catch the apparently arguing pair's attention before they decided to leave her to her own devices.

"Hey! You wouldn't know how to work this thing would you? I must admit I'm a bit on the clueless side with computers."

Hilarious that considering her entire family was actually pretty great with them. Aurora was even an accomplished engineer. But when it came to anything besides excel or a powerpoint presentation...maybe a digital music stand, the lady was helpless.

"I don't mind company at all if you want to share the room, either."

William gave the woman his darkest, most deadly glare, before he sighed, and after looking at Spirit for one more time, approached the computer.

Well, if there really is no way for getting out of it... he said, his eyes flying over the short instruction manual on the side of the screen. So, something like this... he thought outloud, his fingers flying over different levels and modes.

Do you want to play together? he turned towards the woman, checking her out from head to toe. It's easier that way than having to split the room. he said, his fingers hovering over two chosen plays, once joined, one split.

So?

Usually, asking for help wasn't much of a problem. But in doing so, it appeared Aurora had aggravated the man somewhat. Thankfully though, before she mentioned he didn't have to help her out, the man gave up preemptively and went to work on figuring out the confounded machine before Aurora decided to actually get the both of them killed.

That was when instead he decided to make a one-eighty on his previous death glare, asking her to instead join him in a game.

"I did ask for help, the least I could do is join you and your friend as well."
Aurora unzipped the rest of her duffel, equipping several weapons and a sword hilt but set aside her staff knowing there was someone else in the room. Actually, this whole ordeal would make for an excellent challenge.

"My name is Aurora, who do I have the pleasure of practicing with today?"
She was trying desparately to keep on the guy's good side...his age appeared as if he went to the academy, and at the moment, having a student that disliked her, while inevitable, could probably be delayed somewhat.

William. he said shortly, starting the sequence mode and giving them half a minute countdown to prepare.

And those two over there are Spirit and Warrior. he said, pointing towards his Summons before addressing them directly. Are you two coming or what? he asked, considering that both of them were still standing by the door and out of reach of the hologram floor.

I do believe you have told us not to interfere when you fight. Spirit said, lying down on the floor and folding his tail around his hind legs.

Yeah, but... 'this is different' he wanted to say, but bit his tongue in the middle of the sentence. There was no way he was giving them a pleasure. Whatever.

Sequence starting in five, four, three, two... the computer began chanting and William took a fighting stance, stepping away from the board. One.

A Holographic wall build itself around them, and suddenly, they were standing in a deserted swamp.

Aurora had seen summoners before, but generally their 'friends' so to speak were on more amicable terms than this group appeared to be. Either that, or the summoner in control of these spirits was simply having nothing more than a bad day. She was hoping that was the case...having a poor relationship with your summons was bound to be both grating and highly dangerous.

"It's good to meet the both of you. Shall we go?"

And go they did. Aurora loaded her P220s and holstered them along with a sword hilt and other items. At the five second mark, she drew one of her hand guns, holding it at the ready and loading a fresh magazine.

One.

And suddenly her feet felt wet, as well as the rest of her. The smell became rather stymied. Needless to say, the feeling was not pleasant. Aurora lowered her pistol a bit and took around at the trees, listened, and then sighed, not seeing any obvious targets. Aurora started walking forward.

"You didn't happen to know if this place had showers did you? Or does this stuff just disappear after we're all done?"

Aurora pulled back the hammer on her P220. She didn't feel anything quite yet...but who knew what was behind the trees. Or beneath them.

The water is holographic. he said in an even tone, looking calmly around himself at the world the Training Room technology had created for them. It is not real, it is only supported by the Walls. Just like everything else around them, though it was easy to forget that it was only a room no bigger than few classrooms put together once you looked at the waste world around you.

Come on. he said, taking a step forward. Part of the scenario requires that we reach the heart of the swamp. Nothing will attack us here.

And on the subject of attack, William suddenly wondered if he should've come more prepared. When picking a scenario he had counted on Spirit and Warrior being with them, which meant that, unlike his new friend-Aurora, was it?-he had no weapons on his own. And martial arts could only do so much against, for example, a bear.

Biting his lip as he walked, he contemplated on whether he should ask the woman if he could borrow one of her own many weapons, when, suddenly, the water exploded, and he found himself face to face with... he didn't know what. But it had two arms and two legs, a torso and a head. Which meant, he could kick it as much as he wanted.

Hell yeah! he laughed, avoiding the first punch.

Her offspring had probably already encountered stuff like this, but to Aurora, it was definitely a new experience, and one that she was not quite used to. It felt wet right now, but if William said it would disappear, there was no reason to doubt his words on the subject. For now, she just kept wading through the simulated mud, hoping desperately for some action soon.

"This room may as well be magic to me."

And to her, that's exactly what it was. Technology was just another form of magic to her. Formulaic magic, but still magic. Aurora sighed at the notion that despite her experience and age, she just couldn't really keep up with the computerized part of the world. What she could keep up with however, were the whatever things that were exploding up out of the water. They had human shape, but were not only definitely not human, but trying to attack them.

Aurora whipped around to find a second of the drones as she was calling them...and it would quickly find a .45 ACP slug in what would be its head.

"Jeez!"

The mage narrowly avoided a grab in the meantime from another and shot two rounds into it, and started heading in what would be the center of the swamp...at least apparently, and as suggested by William.

"I'm guessing there isn't a set number of those things, keep moving!"

It...is not magic. William said, punching one of the humanoid-looking monsters straight into the face. It's much better than magic., he said, standing up, a crazy smile on his face.

Having about three illusionist in his Power Control class William knew that none of them could ever make something as really as this. Magic made you think that something was happening. Holographic technology literally created a room-sized world.

Nah. he said, running through the mud as fast as he could towards what used to be the center of the room, but was now a yellow-green mist covering the swamp. There could be thousands of them. The game ends either when we die, hopefully not in a literal sense or when we kill the monster in the heart of the swamp. So, very much like a quest game on the computer, only live.
