@"Iridian Death"

It had been a couple weeks but Travis had found himself finally settling in to life at Starlight Academy. He had finally hit his first major assignment of the year. A sort of introductory group project. He had briefly introduced himself to his partner for the project, and agreed to meet in the library. He had arrived early to get himself organized. But what was her name again? The thought crossed his mind again as he tried to recall his partner's name.

She was pale with black hair and she had necromancy as her listed ability. He had some experience with necromancers, one of his aunts was skilled at the craft. He contemplated what this project had in store for them. "Alright, Miss Zombie where are you?" he thought out loud. She wasn't late, he was just getting restless.

Iridian came in exactly on time, to find her partner was already there. Travis. That was his name. Hmm... what could she remember from what she was told. Her attention at the time had been elsewhere... his mum was a witch called Persephone - which was a name easily remembered by Iridian since she was Hades' wife... and he had fangs. And claws. Oh, yeah, and he could turn into this thing that breathed fire. She hoped he wouldn't set their project on fire. Iridian hated group projects. They meant she had to communicate with living people, which was ridiculously out of her comfort zone, and she had to not only communicate, but also work with them. On the plus side, Travis was new, so maybe this project would be easier without being bossed about.

Walking up to him, she watched him for a few moments before saying, "Hi." She was shorter than him, so she had to look up. One time height manipulation would come in handy. When she looked up, she saw his eyes... they reminded her of gemstones... that had been possessed by demons. Very shiny. "Am I late?" She hoped she wasn't. She hadn't really paid much attention to the time, in fact, she'd hoped to get there earlier than him so she could kick start. That plan failed rather pathetically.

"Oh don't worry you're on time, I was kinda early," he answered. He smiled pleasantly, studying her to get a good feel of who he'd be working with for this project. Based solely on appearances, he decided she would be easy to work with but wasn't too excited about the project. Of course, it's a known fact that the dead are much easier to get along with compared to the living. Magical studies should be an interesting enough course. Given both of their histories the project itself could prove simple enough. He was eager to see what the project had in store.

He started heading down an aisle, not really sure where he was going. He hadn't taken time to thoroughly explore the library yet. He was sure he'd run into something relevant to their project. He stopped suddenly when a bolt of practicality hit him. "Um, Miss Zombie, I have no idea where I'm going," he said nervously.

"Good," Iridian replied, wondering why he was smiling at her, before realising he was trying to be friendly. She didn't mind friendly. Overly friendly was creepy, but normal friendly was fine. Perhaps she'd make a friend that wasn't going to disappear one day to the afterlife. "Have you got any good ideas?" She so desperately wanted to exaggerate the word 'good' since most suggestions from past partners turned out fairly awful.

She wanted to do well on the project, and that meant working with him even if it proves to be difficult. Iridian didn't think it would be. She followed him for a while, he just went around the library as if he knew. But when he spoke again, he sounded anxious. Her first thought was 'Miss Zombie? Zombie? Of all the dead, zombie? Really?' Her second thought was that she should've been checking the shelves instead of wondering where he was going. "I think I realised. Since most of the magic books are behind us." She tried not to laugh, but couldn't help a small smirk of amusement. Poor guy.

"Oh right," Travis smiled sheepishly as he turned and headed back the way he'd come. "I may have a few ideas," he began pulling books off the shelf, skimming them as he did, returning some to their spots and keeping others. "There are so many forms of magic everyone's gonna pick out all of the crazy ones or the newer versions," he handed her a few books. "I figure if we want an edge we'll do something on the old world stuff," he explained without taking his eyes off of the book he was skimming.

He had thought about everything his mother had effectively pounded into his head regarding magical studies. She wasn't sure if he had any sort of potential, in fact his pyromancy aptitude was only a fairly recent discovery. "Before people broke out into specialized magic, there was just energy transference and basic healing spells," he said recalling more of his mother's teachings. "Other beings taught humans how to channel the energy into nature and things kinda took off, or so I'm told."

Iridian found that rather intelligent. It was true that people often studied the new types of magic, magic used today, rather than the roots. It would be unique for sure. She received the books, flipping through one and noticing the many pictures. "I think we could link the history of the island in too. People say magic came from here," she noted, considering the options carefully. Surely there'd be a book in here about Monte Carlos itself. She was drawn into the idea of old ways. Old tended to be better. She checked the shelves, looking for a book she thought would be helpful too.

She thought about how she was told magic came into place. There was the way Travis had said, which was probably more realistic than an immortal woman having mortal children with magical qualities. Magic wasn't always genetical. In Iridian's case, it was, but she knew others had ordinary families. She did think Monte Carlos had magic... since in the main world, it was rumoured to be the Bermuda Triangle, yet nobody had seen the island itself.

"You're probably right about that," he was starting to get into the groove of the project. There's also the fact that there's a magical barrier that surrounds the island. Travis couldn't help but wonder how long that had been there and if it needed people to maintain it. He was all for going hard even on some simple group project. After all, first impressions were always important. His eyes scanned the shelves for any other books that they might need.

"I think for now, we should be alright," he said booking at the stack of books that they had amassed. Travis turned to find a table that they could work at. When he finally found a table he took a seat and got right to it. Opening a book and pulling out his notebook. "Alright, let's kick this thing's ass," he said as if he was genuinely ready to fight.

Iridian agreed with a simple nod. Moving to the table, she opened a book as well, pulling a notebook out of her bag. Beginning to write notes, she didn't know whether they were going to work in silence or if they were going to discuss the project further. She didn't care either way. Egyptian mythology believed pharaohs were chosen by gods and were magicians... Greeks and Romans were different. "How do we know which one is right?" she asked. There were so many opinions. This book was killing her. She pushed it away like it was a plate of disgusting foods, and turned to the one on Monte Carlos.

Upon reading a section on the roots of the academy she grinned, "You know that the school was built on top of a graveyard? I thought there was a lot of dead people around for a school." Iridian didn't know if that sounded weird. Probably not considering her powers.

"It's not necessarily that one is more right than the other," Travis started, contemplating how best to explain it. "It's like how North America has grizzly bears and Asia has pandas. They're both bears but they behave differently. So take Greek deities who just kind of screwed anyone and generated hybrid races, while in Egypt they opted out of going and breeding with humans and simply gifted their chosen ones with power," he scribbled out a rough sketch as a visual aid. "I don't think anyone really knows how the world was made, they just credited whatever gods they had to suck up to."

Travis tilted his head. He wasn't all that surprised at learning that the school was built on a burial ground. "Well I suppose that would explain a lot. You ever just call a ghost up and interview em?" he asked, now even more interested in his partner.

"Well that makes it so easy," she murmured to herself, before glancing at the book quietly. Iridian thought all these ancient people should have just decided who was right. But he was right. Everyone had different minds. "We'll have to use them all then." She sighed. More work. Still, it was something for her to do, and he seemed to have a lot more patience than her. That was extremely helpful. "Probably always there. But came with evolution or something," she murmured to herself thoughtfully. She couldn't be sure.

"No," Iridian replied simply, before realising that was probably sounding a bit rude, "I was taught that people will tell you what they want to tell, and you shouldn't push them, so I don't randomly interrogate people." She continued to write notes, looking up every so often to show she was still paying attention. "Besides, it's difficult to call ghosts from down there, because when the soul passes on it doesn't come back. Normally skeletons or something, though they don't have human emotions anymore, so there's no point."
