"For fun and for taste. From everything I've read and seen, it seems that when humans live well, they no longer find themselves concerned with health until it becomes a problem..."
And while Lelei tried to lay out his theory for why humans frequently ate things not just for nourishment--and frequently to the detriment of their health--he went ahead and actually bought a funnel cake for himself. Perhaps the fact that he was unthinkingly biting into a twist of fried dough coated in powdered sugar showed how integrated he had become with normal human society.
"It kind of makes sense. When you no longer have to worry about basic survival, and pretty much everything else is taken care of, why not slack off?"
Lelei had not even thought of the likes of alcohol, or other similar substances. But in regards to that, he had almost no room to judge. He had a fondness for strong whiskey, and nothing about that was healthy in anyway. He just liked the pleasant burn and buzz he got from it, and the occasional drunken night with a cute boy the stuff could lead to.
But not everything was going to be about food. Lelei wanted to show off another key difference he and Ulrich shared: clothes. The two of them passed in front of one of the only higher-end clothing stores on the pier. There were other places to get clothes, specifically beach wear, but this boutique specialized in the brand name stuff.
"In other respects, humans make up for the natural shortcomings. Without much body hair or natural insulation, they need clothes to help regulate their temperatures.
Even then, that tends to be secondary to fashion and looking good. This was something I personally needed to adjust to when I first came on land. As you know, my people do not wear 'clothes' as it is understood up here."
