"I have yet to attend one of those formal human gatherings." Humans, after all, weren't too receptive to strangers during their highly important meetings. Panthalassians had little to do with the land in the first place and the few times they were mentioned, it was in ancient sea tales or mad sailor ramblings of monsters eating boats.

As for parties... Plenty. Nobody questioned the presence of a handsome stranger at a wild event, especially if it was on the beach or in a public space that anybody could attend.

Ulrich had to consider it for a moment, his head tilting ever so slightly to the side. "Do bars count as 'parties'?" He'd been to a couple, night clubs were often scarce by the beach so he didn't do those often.

"I'd be glad to see how humans party." As a king, Panthalassian events were often the tame ones. It was when he shed that title on land did things get a little wild. "I haven't been in quite a few years at this rate. I'd like to see how people have progressed, if they have at all."

"Depending on the crowd, a bar could turn into a party. Or it could be just a place to hang out with friends and drink."

Lelei was experiencing a mild quandary as he tried to think of a place on the Pier that would the King a good taste of the party scene. It was just shy of too early for the night clubs to really hit their stride, but Lelei was set on getting the King into something that was at least a little raucous. He wanted to show Ulrich some excitement and energy among the humans. But where?

He walked a few steps away from Ulrich to survey the bars and party places on the Pier, trying to pick out a place judged only on what seemed to be happening around and outside of it. Very fortunately, Lelei thought he found a good place.

"There! I think we found our place."

Towards the end of the Pier, where the prime ocean-side real estate was located, was a tropical-themed bar and club that was starting to kick things off in the setting sun. Lelei the way, growing more confident with his choice as they neared.

"I'll handle getting in, and getting us a good spot."

True to his word, Lelei managed to get them in the door and to a nice booth overlooking the sea and the dance floor. A frequent patron of the club scene, Lelei had made enough connections to fetch some nice perks. From where they sat, they had a good look at everything and everyone. People were already filtering in and getting their drink on.

"So, are you feeling like anything in particular? From what I remember, this place specializes in fruity cocktails. But they got straight liquor if that's what want too."

Ulrich had mostly been to beach parties. His contact with humans wasn't limited only to how naked people could get near water at any given time, though his other encounters often involved sinking ships and picking femurs out from between his teeth and squirreling away the gold that sunk to the bottom.

Of course, he'd quite enjoyed those human parties he did attend and wondered what Lelei had in store, knowing the pier better than he did. Preferably a place that vaguely resembled those beach parties he was used to; by the water, with a fire and with a throng of scantly glad people vying for attention. Ah, now wasn't that fun?

The sun was just beginning to go down, the breeze was starting to come in a little cold and Lelei had just pointed out a place near the end of the pier. It looked awfully pretty, with an energy that was just becoming to amp up. Not bad at all, and he nodded.

They got a good place to sit. Huh, not bad. He'd make mental note of Lelei for later. He seemed like an effective companion to have on land.

"Human alcohol is a little foreign to me. I'm not entirely sure what their names happen to be." Not that he hadn't partaken before. There was also plenty of 'alcohol' under the sea, made in a variety of different ways. "I think it'd be best if you ordered something for me first, and I trust that you will not kill me."

It was a strange but distinctly Panthalassian compliment; their civil war had pitted brothers against each other and families against different branches of their own clans. If was now a compliment to say that you trusted they wouldn't be killing you.

His eyes wandered to the sea, and then the people who happened to be slowly trickling into the club.

"Ha! If I can drink it and mostly survive, I think you'll be just fine, sir."

Perhaps Lelei misunderstood the actual meaning of Ulrich's request, but the meaning he did get out of it was a complimentary one. The meaning of Lelei's own reply also had its own hidden meaning as well. When Lelei first started working up the courage to partake in surface drinks, he was unsure if he could properly process human alcohol. When things turned out well, all of his hesitations evaporated.

Not long after they were seated, a lovely young woman in tight pants approached the two men with a smile. There was little doubt that her revealing attire was in service of the job. Her attitude seemed genuine though, as if she was really having fun with her job. From the way she eyed Ulrich, she might have also had some interest in him. (His human form at least.)

"Lets get a some whiskey for the two us. Lelei-sized glass for me. The bartender will know what I mean."

The girl did seem a little confused about what a "Lelei glass" was exactly.

"And then lets a nice sampling of your house cocktails. For the two of us. My friend here is curious about the drinks we got around here."

Lelei was purposefully a little vague about Ulrich's interests. Obviously Lelei was not a human, and not many people on the island thought much of him. But to reveal that Ulrich was also not human seemed like poor decorum.

The girl nodded and wished the two of them a good evening before going off to get their drinks. Meanwhile, the population of the club and the volume of the music steadily grew.

"You see that? She was eyeing you up. Think you'd be interested in a human girl like her?"

Ulrich let Lelei do what he had to do. He had very little knowledge of human customs when it came to drinking and honestly, he figured he'd slowly learn anyways. Beach parties usually involved whatever drink happened to be shoved into his hand, and that ended well on most nights. Might as well do it a little more formally now, even though this was far from black tie. Were things different at formal human events?

He didn't take much notice of the girl. Mostly it was looking around, eyeing the sea and all the people on the beach. There were a great variety of them, all with the same number of limbs and eyes and similar features... Humans sure didn't come in the wide variety of shapes as the sea creatures did; at least they were consistent on that end.

So when Lelei brought up how the girl seemed to be interested in him, Ulrich cocked his head to the side in mild curiousity. From what Nicolas had told him, people on land were supposed to be extremely conservative about these things... Yet apparently places like this made it the norm. How odd.

"I suppose she may be alright." He took another glance around. Plenty of pretty humans liked to peacock around at the beach, so he wouldn't have trouble nodding at something nice if he found one. "Plenty of pretty humans here. They seem to ignore the norms of being covered by clothing here."

He didn't mind that much.

Ulrich took another short glance around, paying a bit more attention to the people this time. Quite a few were coming in now and the music, as promised, was getting louder and more upbeat. "So tell me, what is a beautiful human supposed to look like?"

"In places like this, standards are different. Consider it... courting grounds for young humans. A place to show themselves off and be shown off."

"Showing off" was definitely the order of the day within the club. When clothes were being worn, they were colorful and brand name and specially-made to whatever the fashions of the day were. The females, and some of the males, wore their shorts tiny and tight. Shirts were made for showing off physiques or accentuating curves. Hair and make-up were done up to make lips look more kissable and eyes more alluring. Considering all of that, Lelei and Ulrich looked a little out of place.

Lelei found Ulrich's curiosity to be cute and funny, in its own kind of way. He was such a powerful and ancient sea creature, confounded by the attraction a young human woman was showing towards him.

"A beautiful human? Um. That's a tough question."

Looking around, there were already quite a few examples of beautiful humans. There were some common traits like physical fitness and clear skin. But beyond those few qualities, the details became more difficult to discern.

"It's a subjective preference, I suppose. Most people like athleticism and good teeth. But... Like I'm sure a lot of people would find that girl to be beautiful, and she kind of is. But she's not for me. I prefer a few of the young men by the bar.

I think a better question is 'what are you looking for in a partner or mate? If they were human."
