A pair of single-edged, flared-tip hand-and-a-half blades of elven make arced through the air in long, elegant sweeps, occasionally colliding with that signature "clang" of steel-on-steel as their wielders danced across a grassy field in an open, mostly empty part of the school courtyard the twins had picked for this purpose.

Despite the winter chill in the air, the twins wore relatively scant clothing, the adrenaline rush from sparring currently keeping their bodies warm--coupled with the fact their cold resistance was much higher than that of an average human; they wore simple cloth chestwraps and pants, their arms, shoulders, and midsections entirely exposed to the elements. That said, a pair of soft-looking black sweaters, as well as a red and a blue scarf, lay next to the rest of their stuff on a nearby bench.

The twins finished their current bout (which ended with a draw; Azalea's blade stopping short of Rose's neck, with the tip of Rose's sword poised for a thrust to the heart), and bowed respectfully. About halfway through the bow, they both burst into giggles.

"You sure we even need to bother with the overly formal bowing every time we spar?" Azalea said bemusedly as they sheathed their blade and walked back to the bench.

"Come now, you know we promised mother we would. Something about ancient traditions and respect and all that." Rose stifled a giggle at this, imagining the quizzically cross eyebrow mother would be raising at the two of them right now if she could hear them.

After a hug and a little more giggling, Azalea gathered up their stuff and hurried to class. Rose, who had an empty period, sat down on the bench as her sibling left, turning her eyes skyward, admiring what for her was incredibly pleasant weather; an overcast, dim gray sheet of clouds obscuring the sun.

((not that it'll matter after this post since Azalea's leaving so Rose is free for one-on-one RP, but aqua=Azalea, purple=Rose, for ease of distinction))

Thievenne Paget was engaged in an epic battle.

He was not fighting with swords like the two young women in the courtyard had been. Rather, Thievenne was fighting his own literal stupid body.

"Stupid body, c'mon," he mumbled to himself. His eyes were drooping rapidly and his vision kept doubling as he walked. When he blinked, a forest was superimposed over they grey stone. Ven ran a hand through the hair that peaked out of his skullcap.

He was dressed chaotically, as usual, in a pair of black jeans that were so tight it seemed to defy the laws of physics when it came time to sit down. A red flannel was buttoned up over a black t-shirt advertising a Warped Tour line up. He had his piercings on, too, even though he probably shouldn't when he was in school, but it's not like Ven was going to class. He'd been planning on heading to the art room.

Now, the only thing he was heading to was the bench. Ven practically fell onto it, his physics-defying pants not splitting or sagging to show off his tanned butt. He felt bad that there was another person next to him, but Ven wasn't sure he could keep himself up for much longer and he'd rather he passed out on a bench than the middle of the court yard floor.

"hey," he said. "Sorry to just literally drop by."

He exhaled a deep breath and then, glancing at the woman's rather exposed attire said, "Are you cold?"

Clearly, it wasn't Ven's speech skills that got him onto student council.

Rose quickly moved her belongings off the bench to give the young man more room. A bit taken aback by the suddenness of the stranger's arrival, she gave him her best 'I'm totally a normal functioning adult with social skills' smile.

"It's quite alright, benches are for sitting after all. And...I will be, in a few minutes, when the adrenaline wears off, but that's what this is for."

Rose gestured to her sweater as she donned it, casually draping the red scarf around her neck.

"My species' natural resistance to the cold also helps, though even we can get a bit chilly this time of year. In any case, I'm Rose."

Ven tried to breath in through his nose and exhale through his mouth slowly and quietly, just like his doctor had recommended. His vision was still alternating rapidly so Ven grasped onto the conversation he'd started with the young woman next to him.

Hopefully, he thought, this might help him focus right here, right now, on the present.

"Hey Rose,' Ven said. "I'm Thievenne, but most people call me Ven or Moon Moon. You can take your pick."

She dressed herself, which didn't make Ven feel self conscious that she'd been exposed, but rather, now he worried that he'd made her feel uncomfortable by commenting on it.

"I hope it didn't come off rude of me," he explained. "it's just that, well, it is cold, and I always worry about people not having jackets and needing them."

His tolerance to the cold was pretty good, too. Normally.

Just...not when he sat outside in it for a few hours at a time, which is exactly what tended to happen when he passed out.

Rose's polite semi-forced smile broadened into a real one.

"Not rude in the least, it's good to be reminded there are still considerate people out there who care about their fellow sapient beings."

Rose stood up for a moment to stretch a little, just to be sure she didn't get a cramp after the sparring.

"Are you all right, incidentally? You seemed a bit...oh, I don't know the word, but...not quite alright, when you came this way."

Rose, satisfied for the moment with the stretching, picked up her sword--resting in an ornate polished darkwood sheath with stylized rose vines carved and painted upon it--from the bench and slipped it in her messenger bag, the hilt sloppily sticking out as it didn't quite fit. She set the bag at the foot of the bench and sat back down on the bench, turning to look at Ven.

Ven took a deep breath in. He tried to picture the air expanding his lungs, filling him with life and being awake. Mostly, what Ven was picturing was the woods.

Stop, he told himself. Stop and focus on the present.

He clung to this conversation.

"I don't always think before opening my mouth, so I'm glad you at least knew my intentions were good," he said, giving a small laugh followed by an even smaller smile. Ven had the personality of a puppy: he was thrilled to play and delighted by anything you might throw his way, but he tired quickly.

Painfully quickly.

"I'm alright," he said.

Was he trying to reassure her or himself?

He settled for his brief explanation. "Part of my..gift or powers or condition or whatever we want to call it is that sometimes I end up falling asleep whether I want to or not. Nothing like crashing in the middle of the courtyard to get me sent to the infirmary for the hundredth time, you know?"

At least on the bench he wouldn't break or sprain anything. Hopefully.

"So how do you like it here?" he asked.

The school, the island. He let her take his pick.

Rose nodded with a certain amount of understanding. She'd never had exactly Venn's problem, but she did know what it was like for one's abilities to cause ample frustration and social difficulties.

"It's quite nice. I've been here for over six decades and yet I can always find something new and exciting on this island. Mothers tell me that's a rare and precious quality in a place...of course, I'm still young, so perhaps Manta Carlos will seem dull to me in time, but...from what I've seen so far, I seriously doubt it."

Rose sank into the bench comfortably.

"And...it's certainly nice not to have to hide these," Rose tapped the tip of one of her long, pointy ears, resplendent with piercings all along it's outer edge in a rainbow of red, pink, and orange gemstones in silver earrings forming a neatly-spaced line along the entire length of the ear, utilizing the extra 'real estate' nicely.

"And just...not to have to hide in general."

Six decades.

Though he should have been used to revelations like that, Ven's eyebrows still shot up in surprise. She was probably close in age to her grandmother, assuming she was old enough to remember coming here and not a baby or something, but it was still shocking.

Ven exhaled and leaned back on the bench. He pinched the bridge of his nose again.

Okay, focus.

He opened his yellow eyes and took in her ears again. It brought a small ghost of a smile to his face.

"I could imagine," he said.

Ven wondered if he ever felt like he was hiding. He considered this. He supposed he felt more like he was hidden versus hiding, which was a big distinction he didn't consider.

"I don't know if this crosses any boundaries so please tell me to shut up at any time, I'm pretty ignorant of stuff, but are you like...a fae?"

Rose giggled audibly.

"It's quite alright...as long as my answer doesn't make you too afraid of me. I'm...distantly descended from fae. I don't actually know what type exactly, the relation is several generations removed, and as we are long-lived, that means it was thousands of years ago. But yes, most of my distant ancestors were some variety of fae, and a few..."

Rose raised her right hand and closed her eyes for a moment. When she reopened them, her sapphire-blue eyes gained a singular focus, as her hand transformed from flesh and blood into pure violet-blue energy arcing with visible electricity. Rose closed her eyes again, dismissing the transformation as her hand returned to normal.

"...were elementals."

Rose took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly.

"But enough about me. I'm not nearly that interesting. If I'm not crossing any boundaries, I'd love to hear more about your abilities. Oh, in fact..." Rose suddenly looked embarrassed, even blushing very slightly, "How callous of me not to think of this when you first mentioned; should we perhaps go inside so that you'll be more comfortable should you loose consciousness?"
