When he fell, his ankle twisted at a weird angle and cracked and Loch felt a moment of panic before he fell again, this time in air, and ended up submerged.

He'd been trying to avoid water and now he was sitting fifteen feet under in ice. He exhaled in the water, then took a deep breath, swallowing the water until it was in his lungs and it felt like he was going to burst...and then he relaxed. It was dark under the water and for the first time in a long time, Loch was in his element.

There was a splash above him that flailed and then pulled itself out and Loch could only presume was the girl.

it's a shame she didn't stay in the water longer. It was nice down here. Maybe he should go get her.

He pushed himself up to the surface and coughed, the frigid air against his lungs uncomfortable compared to the relative warmth of the water.

She lay at the edge of the water and Loch could hear her shallow breathing and smell the way her hair clung to her head. Loch pulled himself up onto the side of the pool, water streaming off of him, and the moment he put weight onto his ankle it gave out underneath him.

It didn't matter, he mused, he could drag her back to the edge from here, she sounded weak and smelled like blood and--

oh, neptune, what was he doing?

"Cassie!" Loch hobbled over to her side and leaned down next to her, sticking his hands under her armpits to drag her a few feet further from the pool.

He collapsed on the ground next to her, pulling her body close to his own until they were almost spooning. He could smell her blood and when he pressed his face into her hair, the blood from the back of her neck brushed against his mouth.

"Oh, shit, Cassie," he mumbled, his breath hot on her neck, and he licked her blood off his lips. "Are you okay, sweetie? "

It was quiet, so, so, quiet. Loch could hear the rain hitting the ground above them and being absorbed into the soil. He could hear the drip, drip, drip of water off his hair and onto the ground, and his own chattering of teeth now that he was up out of the water.

"Are you hurt, sweetie?" he mumbled comfort into her ear, stroking her arms while gently checking for signs that they were broken.

She heard lochlann pull himself out of the water and opened her eyes a little before squeezing them shut again. She flinched as he moved her, the cut on her back grinding into the ground. Her body had already began to shake from the cold. She looked up at Lochlann though squinted eyes, only being able to make out a rough outline of him. She noticed that he hair was partly covering her face, making it even harder to see. It took her a moment to figure out who it was that was calling out to her.

“… Lochlann.” She finally whispered, then sighed. She wasn’t really sure what was going on or where they were. She felt him press against her back and couldn’t find the energy to move much at all, though she wasn’t entirely limp. Her head swam as her body shifted again and she felt his face buried in her hair. “Lochlann… My head… My head is messed up…” she managed to slur out just those words. She knew she had a concussion, she just couldn’t think of how to pronounce the word. His touch and voice were the only things preventing her from slipping into a very deep slumber. She just wanted to shut out all the pain and confusion around her. Her cuts would stop bleeding soon but she would be covered in bruises for days. The makeup on her face was smeared and her hair was everywhere, partly covering her face. The ribbon was long gone. She had no idea what had happened to the shirt she was holding. She wasn’t even sure she had been holding one. The more she realized what she didn’t know, the more afraid she became. She felt like crying, but was too afraid to. Instead she just lay in Lochlann arms with her eyes clenched shut, shaking.

That's right, he thought, she'd wacked her head.
Pretty hard, too. Her thoughts would be all jumbled. She was alone down here with him in the dark, probably afraid, and definitely cold.

He was cold, too.

He ran his hands up her arms again, rubbing them to make some warmth.

He was snapping in and out of it, sometimes she was Cassie, and sometimes she was just a girl. He pulled her a little closer when she was just a girl, but then, because she was Cassie, he kept her there.

"I've never had a concussion before,' he admitted, "but I don't think I'm supposed to move you."

He couldn't move her even if he wanted to, not with his ankle the way it was.

"so we have a few options, but the first one is that we need to get out of these wet clothes." His voice was low, almost husky, and he was whispering in her ear yet, and now his hand slid down her arm to touch the bottom of her shirt, indicating that he'd pull it up and off with the slightest encouragement. His other hand worked at his jeans, unzipping them, and he wiggled his hips and kicked until his pants were off and he was laying on the ground, in the dark, with only his boxers on.

This was both heaven and hell for him.

"Nothing good will happen if we catch a chill down here, especially not in your current condition," he said, his words half whisper.

His priority was getting her warm and dry and awake until he could figure out what to do next. He couldn't move her, he couldn't leave her, and it was taking a considerably amount of self control to remember that her name is Cassie. Cassie. Cassie.

He wished he knew more about saving people instead of eating them.

"It's going to be okay, Cassie."

The dizziness was letting up. Very slowly. She could almost see straight. Lochlann’s touch was the only thing keeping her conscious. It was soothing, but quickly becoming less so. He was really touching her a lot, now that she thought about it. Every once in awhile she’d feel something press against her from behind and she’d jump away from him. “I-I don’t think it would matter… We ran through the woods and I fell down that hill…” She reached up to rub her eyes, brushing her hair form her face and arms.

He whispered something in her ear that she wasn’t entirely sure she liked. Her hand suddenly whacked his and she wiggled away. “I-I… “ Oh god what should she do? She was pretty sure he just took off his pants. She couldn't turn around and look at him. Her clothes were freezing. “I-I’m fine” She squeaked. She couldn’t get naked! Her breasts and hips were too small! And she thought she might have gained a little fat on her tummy! There was no way she could take off her clothes… Of course her bathing suit covered less than her underwear, but it wasn’t the same! Oh god he was naked wasn’t he?

She just lay there stiffly a little ways away from him. She was shaking quite a bit now. She felt cold to the very bone and her head was still spinning a little. Maybe she should sit up? No she’d just get dizzy and sick again. “I-I’m fine really.” Her voice was still high-pitched. She wasn’t sure what to do or what to say. She just sort of froze. She was really scared and she was really uncomfortable. She had never had a boyfriend more than a week let alone get naked around a guy and she really obviously did not know what to do.

She slapped his hand away and sat up suddenly, which would give most guys the message of screw-off and give up, but not Loch.

He sighed and sat up, too, grabbing his pants from off the ground and ringing them out. Water sploosh sploosh splooshed from the denim onto the ground and trickled back into the pool.

Something in Lochlann twisted at the sound of the water trickling into that pool. It was more than a want, more than a whim.

He sighed again and angled himself to where he thought Cassie was in the dark, listening to her shivering and saying that she was fine.

"Cassie," he said, and then his voice dropped, because he was breaking his One Rule. You don't talk about What-You-Are. There were some creatures here who knew he wasn't human, who knew he was an imposter, but no one mentioned it. Everyone just walked around pretending like they were all the same, because that's what most of them grew up doing.

"Unless you're a, uh, healer of some kind...I don't know if you're fine, so I have to assume you're not." He stretched his jeans out on a relatively dry patch of the floor, feeling along the ground.

"But I know a lot about cold, dark places, and I know the worst thing you can do is sit in soaking wet clothes. If you're worried about me seeing you, take a look around, because it's freaking dark.....and I usually at least buy girls dinner first before I'm trying to get them out of their pants." He threw the joke in their feebly, trying to lighten the situation a little bit, because he was worried.

He tried to pick himself up again but his ankle wanted nothing of that, and the sudden jarring reminded his ribs that they were pissed at him. At least the pain kept him in the moment.

"Cassie, do you trust me?"

He wasn't sure why he even asked that. It was a loaded question.

She stayed quiet, huddling into herself and her wet clothes for a long time, sort of half-listening to what he was saying. She had never felt like this before, so detached from her own body. It was almost like she was looking onto the situation from afar. He was right, it was dark. And her skin ached at the cold of the water in her clothes, the shivering was zapping her strength fast. He was right though, it was dark. She finally looked at him, slowly so as to not become dizzy again. She was a little startled by how thin he really was but he looked so beautiful it was disturbing to her. She thought he was attractive before, but now he just seemed… more natural perhaps?

In the weak light coming through the hole she fell through she could make out the highlights of his face and body and his beautiful damp hair. Her heart and lower abdomen ached in an unfamiliar way. She realized she was staring and buried her face in her knees. Finally he asked if she trusted him. She lifted her head and thought for a moment. She thought about how much they’ve gone through together already and how many times he’d looked after her even though he barely knew her.

“Yeah.” Finally she had spoke. Not hesitantly or weakly, just very quietly. She forced a little smile and hesitated but managed to pull her stiff limbs around her and pull off her shirt, tossing it to the side with a squish. Her jeans were quite a bit more difficult and required some rolling around on the ground and kicking, along with her socks and shoes. Under her clothes she wore matching pink and blue polka dotted underwear set with bikini bottoms and a very padded bra. She turned away from Lochlann and squeezed the cups of the bra, trying to get the water out of the padding, but it didn’t do much.

As soon as she finished she curled back into herself. She never thought being more nude would make her this much warmer. Still her body shook, but it was much more bearable.

She trusted him.

Holy shit.

She trusted him, and he was a complete monster. Loch felt warm the moment she took her clothes off, but it wasn't for the obvious reason of having a cute girl naked next to him. It was because she trusted him and he didn't realize how much he wanted that until now.

Loch was determined not to screw things up, but it was so incredibly hard.

He rubbed his ankle, flinching a little, but it felt swollen. Probably sprained or twisted, but definitely not broken. He could move all his toes. That was good.

Loch inched towards the cave wall and picked himself up slowly, hobbling along at a slow pace a few feet back into the cave, until he realized a fatal mistake.

He was barefoot.

Loch never went anywhere barefoot.

There wasn't the gentle plopping of human feet off wet floor, even if that's what was really happening, because he had human feet.

It was the sound of hooves.

"This looks like it goes pretty far back," Loch said, a little bit louder than he needed to, just to try and cover the sound as he made his way back to Cassie. He dropped down next to her side, acting like being naked in a cave was a totally normal thing, even if his heart was hammering.

He wanted to tell her he really liked her, but it didn't feel safe, especially not this close to the water.

"Cassie, I have to be honest, this was not how my pirate adventure was going to go. There really was buried treasure, I swear, only I didn't expect us to actually get buried."

He moved his arm out to touch her shoulder, hesitated, and then draped his arm over her shoulders, letting his body heat warm her a little. He kept his touch loose so she could pull away if she wanted to again, but Loch was even questioning this. Was he doing this because he was concerned about her or because he wanted to kiss her and drag her into that lake and have her for dinner?

It shouldn't be this hard to ask girls out on a date.

"I'll get us out of here, Cassie, I promise. I just can't do it in the rain." he was just talking now, filling the silence, and trying to keep her awake. He didn't know a lot about head injuries. He couldn't remember if sleeping on it was a myth or not, but he wasn't willing to take chances.

It took her a long second to figure out what she was hearing, and even then she wasn’t sure. The clopping bounced around in the silent cave. She slowly turned, looking magnificently confused back towards where Lochlann had walked. Suddenly he shouted, causing her to jump. She flipped around to face him, wide-eyed. Maybe she was just hearing things, her head was pretty messed up.

“How do we know which way to go?” Her head turned to watch him as he approached her, smiling weakly as he sat down. Her smile faltered for a moment as Lochlann lamented at their current predicament. She scooted a little closer to him, wrapping her arms around herself until she felt his arm around her. She didn’t move away, rather she moved quite close to him and wrapped her arms around his stomach, press the less-bruised part of her face against his shoulder.

She didn’t know what to say to that. It’s not like she thought this was his fault. “It’s okay. Are you okay? I-I mean you were limping weren’t you?” She sighed in a very exhausted manner, letting her eyes shut and dropping one arm from around him, leaving one arm curled around his back. “What does the rain have to do with anything? We can at least try and make a fire outside, right?” It didn’t make sense. Most things that have happened recently haven’t. Instead of thinking about it she just wanted to relax and rest her eyes. She wasn’t sure she was going to live a few minutes ago, but deciding that she trusted Lochlann reassured her that as long as he was here nothing too bad could happen, right?

She knew she shouldn’t sleep, but it was getting terribly hard with the quiet darkness of the cave and the fogginess in her head. She forced her eyes back open and sat up a little, trying to listen to Lochlann’s voice and stare into the darkness as long as she could. She jumped once more when she heard a large crack come from the hole they had fell through before a large chunk of earth fell into the water with a loud sploosh. Water droplets sprayed them slightly and she curled closer to Lochlann’s side, flinching away from the cold water. She looked at Lochlann, unsure of what to do. “Is it safe here,” she asked, fear apparent in her tired, dark eyes. She looked back to the water, watching the run off and rain from above come pouring in. “The ceiling is falling…” Her words were quiet and concerned.

“How do we know which way to go?”
She scooted closer to him and Loch wrapped his arm a little tighter, pulling her closer against his chest both to warm her and himself.

”I don’t know,” Loch admitted, ”but I think we can find a way out. We’re on an island, so the caves can’t run too far, because eventually they’d hit the ocean or something.”

“It’s okay. Are you okay? I-I mean you were limping weren’t you?” Her concern touched him for some reason, and Loch felt strangely guilty by that, as though he’d somehow ruined her. Her next question made it even worse. “What does the rain have to do with anything? We can at least try and make a fire outside, right?”

Loch swallowed even though there was nothing stuck in the back of his throat. ”I guess I haven’t been completely honest with you about myself,” he started, but then it happened.

The chunk of the ceiling fell off and hit the water, spraying them both and Loch felt his resolve crumbling. There was no way he was going to get dry, and now he ached. He stifled a groan but it didn’t help. His human shape felt like a too-tight sweater he wanted to cast off. He looked exceptionally handsome with the water dripping down his face and bare chest, and his boxers clung to his sharp hips.

This was the predatory part of the illusion that he was normal. His entire appearance was biologically designed to lure women in and make them ignore the warning signs even as he convinced them to do things they normally wouldn’t do. The pupils in his eyes had dilated until only a sliver of green remained around the edges.

“Is it safe here,” she asked, quiet and concerned, and Loch was just as quiet as he answered.

”No.”

He grabbed his pants and rung them out again, then doing the same with Cassie’s clothes. He tucked them into his shoes and tied the laces together, draping them over the strap of Cassie’s backpack, which he tossed over his shoulder. He leaned against the wall for support, pulled himself up, and then reached his hand down to her, getting ready to help pull her to her feet.

”We need to get away from the water,” Loch said, ”Now. We’ll find a way out, I have an idea, but I don’t know how long I can hold out for.”

His voice was strangely calm, but it was the kind of calm before a storm. He had an idea of how to get them out of here, but he didn’t want to wait much longer. If they could find where the cave sunk into the ocean, Loch would be able to just swim them out….if he didn’t drown her, first.

She smiled a little. “I guess I never thought of that. I mean then if we go in the direction of the current from the water there we’ll get out right? Cause everything flows into the ocean…” She pointed. She seemed quite consoled by this though she was still cold and quite woozy. She took the opportunity to bury her face into his chest to warm her cold nose and lips, though only momentarily.

She face fell into a serious, contemplative state as he spoke again, confessing that he was not being honest. “I-it’s okay… You… You don’t know everything about me either…”

A freezing cold chill ran down her spine as she realized they knew virtually nothing about one another. Still, being in life or death situations made her feel much closer to him than anyone else she had known. The reality of it scared her a little. Nonetheless she chose not to say anything about it, letting a stiff silence fall over them until the crash of the falling earth.

Luckily for Cassandra she had thus far done her best not to look at him for too terribly long, besides the one time she caught herself staring. It was uncomfortable for her to be sitting in her underwear with someone and the fact that she liked him very much just made it that much worse. The only way she had been dealing with it up to this point was telling herself that it was quite necessary, which it was.

Her comfort washed away with the splash of freezing water. Lochlann suddenly had gone somewhere between tense and aloof, but she couldn’t be sure why. Then it (finally) clicked. Water must have something to do with his powers. When he got up she found herself watching him and growing warm for a long time as he packed up their belongings. Just as he was finishing up she realized her prolonged admiring and less than innocent eye-wanderings and covered her face, meaning to rub her face to cover the blush and cursing herself but she ended up rubbing the bruising on her face rather hard instead, causing herself to curse herself for that instead. She drew breath sharply and flinched, pulling her hands away from her face and momentarily forgetting her embarrassment.

One thing that was nice about life or death situations is that she found she didn’t have a lot of time to be embarrassed or awkward. One thing not so nice about the situation was that Lochlann’s sudden seriousness really frightened her. Still, she wasn’t afraid of him, more for him. She took his hand and instead of leaning on him she leaned on the wall behind him, still doing her best to hold onto his hand. She wanted to know he was there, but she couldn’t lean on him after learning that his ankle was hurt. She would just have to manage. Just one problem, as soon as she started moving she realized her lungs felt heavy and sore and it was rather hard to breathe. She coughed a little, then stopped, finding it rather dizzying.

As they walked she tried her best not to think about the pain all over her body and her thoughts wandered back to Lochlann’s fear of water. She was very quiet and followed Lochlann without hesitation. Suddenly she asked the question that had been on her mind, knowing full well how stupid it sounded. “So… Um…” Should she really say it? It was pretty dumb. “Are you like… A water werewolf?” Her voice raised in pitch near the end as if she was questioning what she was saying herself. She tried not to laugh at her own question, and really it wasn’t that she was asking because she felt like she needed to know, though she did want to know simple because it would make them closer in her mind. She asked simply because she was curious.
