"Maybe it's better that our meeting wasn't the work of luck. Makes it that much stronger, doesn't it?"
Varvara smiles at Sam and stands up, trying to bounce the paper ball on her head. She succeeds a couple of times but she drops it. Varvara picked it up and tried again.
"But if you'd live without it it'd mean you'd live without Jacky. Is that truly what you want, Sam?"
Varvara put the paper ball on top of Jacky's head to see, if she'd want to balance it as well.

Jacky immediately froze, her ears adjusted to allow the ball to rest easier on her head. Other than that, she doesn't move a muscle. She looked intensely focused.
Sam sighed. "I just want to be able to live my life without worrying I'll end up transported to a different time period and losing all my memories again." He sounded sad. "Unfortunately, she's the reason I can't..." He sounded somewhat sarcastic as he said 'unfortunately'.

Varvara watched how well Jacky balanced the ball on her head and clapped her hands a bit. Then she looked at Sam with a serious expression.
"Sometimes we only realize how important things are to us when they're gone."
she said simply and smiled a little sorrowfully and thought of the wide void she had in her head. The invisible void before Varvara was a nymph. She wasn't sure if something was supposed to be there or not, but it ached nevertheless.
"I understand that thanks to Jacky you have your luck. But how are you so sure it is she who is responsible for your time hops?"
Varvara was truly interested to hear Sam's reasoning to this, and she leaned in a little closer.

Sam shrugged. "I'm... not entirely sure to be completely honest. Remember that very lucky event I mentioned? I don't know how but... I know that these time hops are related to it..." He placed the pencil in his hand down and stared down at the table.
"They probably happen after some kind of event but... I don't want to forget... it makes my life so miserable, living everyday like I'm just going to up and vanish the next."

Varvara looked at Sam and then at Jacky, who was still balancing the ball. She was a sweet creature for staying with Sam, protecting him. Varvara smiled and took the ball off to give Jacky a scratch between the ears.
"Then Jacky must be one magical jackalope. I am so sorry for your situation Sam."
Varvara turned to look at Sam, and there were some tears in her eyes.
"I cannot say I don't know how you feel."

Sam sighed. "I came here to try and get a bit better at reading, not contemplate about my past honestly." He sounded done with the conversation and just looked tired.
Jacky's nose twitched and she stiffened more. It twitched a bit more... Then she sneezed, causing the ball to fall off of her head. She rubbed her nose with her front paws, her nose still twitched.
Sam sighed. "Any other words you have any trouble with? Pretty sure this is a learning experience for both of us." He offered a smile.

Varvara nodded, he understood where Sam came from. And the boy did look tired, emotionally and physically. Varvara watched as Jacky sneezed and couldn't help but chuckle as she rubbed her nose. So adorable!
"I understand, I apologize. I do have a problem reading this word here."
Points at the word. It's 'forgiveness'.

Sam frowned as he looked at the word. "Ok, gimme a sec..."
"For... Yeah, for. For - give - ness?" He tilted his head for a brief moment. It didn't seem his luck had kicked in for this, but it was genuinely a word he just found he could read. His finger trailed along the paper as he read each part of the word. "Forgiveness?" He muttered.
Jacky twitched her nose some more. She nudged the ball, as if she was asking to have another go at balancing the ball.

Varvara smiled gently at Sam as the boy read the word. It was another beautiful one. Varvara looked at Jacky and picked up the ball, putting it on top of the jackalope's head. Jacky started balancing it again and she was really good at it. Varvara tilted her head a bit and grabbed the pencil and paper.
"I shall try to write my own name."
She proclaimed and started writing, making weird faces.

Sam chuckled as he watched Varvara make weird faces as she wrote. “I’ll write my name once you’re done.” He sounded pretty amused.
Jacky was one again intensely focused as she balanced the ball on her head, her nose scrunched up to prevent another disastrous sneeze.
”I can guess it begins with a ‘v’ and ends with ‘ra’ but it could be one those weird names with really unnecessary letters in between? I dunno.” This was Sam’s attempt at socially awkward small talk.
