It took a second to register that he had shot upright and kissed her on the mouth.

In her current state of mind, this almost seemed okay. Draining people made her a lot more cuddly than usual. But she and Lochlann didn't have the kind of relationship where they, uh, made out. Not to mention the fact that he was a Cabyll-Ushtey and they were right next to a body of water. And that there were a lot more important things for them to be focusing on right now.

When he moved in for round two, Chloe firmly held him away by the shoulders, keeping their lips apart. Their faces inches away from each other, Chloe looked him in the eyes.

"Lochlann? Uh, how do I put this nicely, what the fuck do you think you're doing?"

The draining stopped for a moment as she asked this, then quickly started up again.

The only thing keeping Lochlann upright was her hands on his shoulders. He felt drunk, but Lochlann hadn't been drinking. When she stopped draining him for a moment, his head started to loll as though it was too heavy for his neck, and it wasn't until she continued that he managed to perk back up.

He was looking at her eyes, which were looking into his, and Lochlann was glad he was a monster because it gave him night vision well enough to see how lovely her eyes were.

"I don't know," he told her. "Making a mistake, probably. Chloe, what big eyes you have."

The necklace hanging on his chest felt heavy.

"All the better to see you with, my dear," she said dryly. "Haven't you made enough mistakes today already?"

She sighed.

"You need something for that knife wound. And if we don't want people asking questions then we're going to have to deal with it ourselves. I think there's a place in town with a 24 hour pharmacy."

But could Lochlann walk there?

She sneered as she realized that he didn't have to.

"Come on, up you go," she said, picking him up bridal-carry style. This would be his punishment for that over-the-line smooch earlier. She knew he hated being carried, especially by a girl.

"No," Lochlann said.

And then, when she talked about treating the knife wound, Lochlann shook his head. "No, we don't, I started to fix it myself, seeeeeeee?"

His stitches were too wide and useless, but he'd made the attempt. He'd left his throat and chest alone. That required more thought than he'd had at the time.

Then, the worst thing that could happen next to drowning his friend happened: she picked him up. He hated this, but he hated it less than the idea of talking about what had happened with Guinevere Haze.

"Put me down," he told her, and then, Lochlann begged. "Please, Chloe."

"Well," Chloe said, "Your wounds still look really bad. The stitching is too loose, so I'll have to redo that. After I buy some gloves and some disinfectant and stuff. In the meantime," she restrained herself from sneering, "I'm not totally sure you can walk right now. You're injured and I've been draining you. That's not a great combination for people who are trying to walk."

She was still draining him. It made carrying him easier.

Behind her amusement at Lochlann's expense, she was still stressed out about this whole situation. It may have been a bit selfish to do this to him, but he was putting her through a lot already. He could take it.

"Or we could take you to the hospital, I guess. Free health care. We could just be vague about what happened to you. They still have to fix you up." This was a serious suggestion.

"I can totally walk," Lochlann told her. He felt really drunk, but he figured it was just because Chloe was draining him. HE had so, so much pent up energy, he felt like he could run laps around the whole island if he wasn't so exhausted. It was something of an oxymoron, but Lochlann couldn't process that thought. "Chloe darling i am a horse, i could walk to the ends of the earth. We can let this go. The bleeding isn't a problem, the problem is that I can't sleep."

At the mention of the hospital Lochlann squirmed and writhed violently in her grasp. If she wasn't much stronger than he, Lochlan probably would have managed to escape.

"No, no, no, no, no--" he said, with all his protests running into one long word without any exhales in between. "Chloe please, not there, I'll...I'll...IM GOING TO LICK YOUR FACE."

It was the most drastic threat he could come up with.

"I am never going back to the hospital if you take me there i will draw a dick on your face with blood and i'll go into your bathroom and i'll pee and then leave the toilet seat up and i'll put your salt in your pepper container and vice versa and then i'll swap out your drawers so all your underwear are where your pajamas are and really confuse you when you go to change and then i'll take all your spoons and you can try and eat ice cream then where is your dark powers now chloe when you have no precious spoons please don't take me to the hospital i never want to go back there," Lochlann said. He took a deep breath.

Chloe hadn't expected such a violent reaction to going to the hospital.

"Jeez, calm down." she said. She kept a firm hold of Lochlann, not because she still wanted to carry him, but because she didn't want to drop him. He kept hurling threats at her; he probably didn't even notice that she was talking.

"CALM DOWN!" she shouted at him. "I won't drag you to the hospital. Stop moving so I can put you down."

Once his feet were back on the ground, she would continue. "Fine. So, no hospital. Is the school clinic okay, then? Or am I going to have to help fix you up myself? Because... I'm not gonna let you just walk off without getting fixed up. You'll probably sleep better when you don't have a gaping, bleeding wound in your chest, don't you think?"

Lochlann's chest was heaving and he was breathing hard. He felt like a thoroughbred at the end of the track. He was still shaky and jumpy, but he seemed relieved to be on his own two feet, where he could always bolt if she tried to take him to the hospital.

"I can't go back there," he said. He shook his head. He took a deep breath and then said, "I'm sorry I said all those things."

He was really confused as to why this was an issue--he'd just told her that the bleeding wasn't a problem. He touched his sticky chest and looked at the crusted red stuff between his hands. He'd been covered in more after he'd eaten his last girlfriend. He'd live.

"You can just..do me here, on the beach, and I'll sleep on the beach, and the worst that will happen is the robber crabs will come out and eat the dead flesh," he said.

This was not at all how it worked.

"Chloe can i try and kiss you again? also did you ever try to fish with your tail? you could probably catch so many things because they could nibble on your tail and you could whip it up lightning fast and then impale them."

"It's fine," Chloe said. She knew they were all idle threats. He was just having a bit of a panic attack.

Lochlann wanted to kiss her again. Chloe furrowed her eybrows at Lochlann, looking at him like he was going completely insane. This might have had something to do with her suspicion that he was going completely insane.

"I, uh, haven't tried that. And let's... let's put the kissing on hold for now," Chloe said. "I'm still pretty sure that having a gaping hole in your chest is making your sleep more difficult than you realize. Sleep should come more easily to you when you don't have a gaping hole in your chest. Also we could probably grab some drugs that would make you drowsy."

Chloe had learned her lesson about hitting the black market for those sorts of things. None of the sleep aids at the pharmacy were likely to turn them into cats.

"Also you didn't answer my question. Am I taking you to the school clinic or do I have to fix you up myself?"

Lochlann sighed.

Chloe was really fixated on the wrong part of this issue. He wondered if it was because it was the most visually appealing part of him right now. He wished he had a better background story than a hot assassin fucked me at knifepoint and I went along with it so she didn't kill me and also cause HOT ASSASSIN AM I RIGHT?? for his injuries. He wished he'd done something better for them.

"I'm not allowed to take sleeping pills anymore," he told her. Lochlann crouched down and started to fumble through the sand, but he didn't see what he was looking for, so he turned and made a beeline for the ocean. He waded in until the bottom of his sweatpants were soaked and Lochlann shoved his face under the water, fumbled about, and then returned with sea water dripping off of him.

He held out a shell for her, one of those shark eyes. He'd managed to wash off some of the blood on his chest with his little stint, too.

"I didn't turn into a horse, and I only want to eat you a little bit, right now, Chloe," Lochlann told her. "I didn't turn into a monster at all when it rained. Can we please not go anywhere with light and sound and people? I don't want you to make a fuss over me, either. I promise I will get these looked at some time tomorrow. I'm just--"

scared?

Lochlann shook his head.

"I'm just trying to forget about what happened tonight. Haven't you ever wanted that?"
