If Natalie had her choice, she wouldn't have been at the arena today.

It's not that the fighting made her squeamish, there was plenty of blood in her past. But it always felt binary to her. There was always new talent coming and going, but the outcome was never enough to interest her. Either a fighter won, or they lost. There were stories to find here, but not ones that interested her.

However, her own investigations she'd been working on had been stalled, and her bosses at the Print were getting impatient. Nat needed to do some work in the meantime, and at the moment the only thing they had available for her was an interview they had arranged with the arenas newest fighter for the sports column. Simple work.

She arrived at the arena earlier than arranged, working her way through the crowds and finding herself a seat. Her interviewee, one Ivanka Stepanov, was scheduled for a match in a few minutes. While she wasn't a big fan of the fights, Nat figured that you could learn a lot about someone based on how they fought. Once the fight was over, she would head down to the locker rooms to talk to her. Until then, she settled in to watch and see what kind of person she was speaking with today.

Business as usual as Ivanka showed up for her scheduled fight. Her opponent was a female giant with an aggressive brawler style. The giant stood at a height several inches taller than her and was far more wide and buff. Ivanka herself was a tall, slender woman with only some muscle definition, but certainly not enough to make her look like much of a combatant. Her outfit of choice was a sports bra, tight-fitting leggings, and barefoot. Her long red hair was tied up into a messy bun. She uttered nothing as the giant taunted her in the ring.

"Careful! Wouldn't want to break limbs like twig!"

In reality, they were decently acquainted outside of the ring. This was a bit of showmanship combined with playful jabbing. A wide smile crossed the redhead's face. She stood straight, feet spread apart slightly, and raised her hand. She beckoned with one finger. Her opponent grunted and proceeded to swing. The fight that ensued proved to be a fierce one. At first it appeared one-sided with the dragon repeatedly dodging and being on the defensive. Some hits certainly got her, but she didn't attack back. How odd....

That is until she spotted an opening. One slide to the right, kick to the gut, and complete with a follow-up kick to the chin. She gracefully backflipped off of her opponent as the hits caused the giant to stumble. Just as she was about to land on her feet, she lunged forward with an elbow strike and proceeded to wail on the baffled victim. Eventually the giantess regained her footing and swung, only for Ivanka to dodge underneath the fist and strike directly at the bone of the ankle. This led to the fighter tumbling forward. Hopping behind, ivanka shoved with all of her strength and grabbed the misplaced leg for a leg lock.

Several poundings and tense grapples later, the newcomer emerged victorious. She went to the locker room with a couple of large bruises on different portions of her body. She wiped the sweat off her face with a towel and turned to get water. As she chugged, her nose sensed a different entity with her. The scent told her a feline.

"Looks like the room dragged in the cat."

Ms. Stepanov noted dryly as she turned to face the reporter. "Are you journalist? Heard something about an interview."

“Trust me, I’ve probably heard every cat joke you can come up with.”

Nat simply smiled towards the dragon as she sauntered into the locker room, hands in her pockets as she regarded Ivanka up close, eyes briefly running up and down her body.

“I am, yes. Natalie Kurono, with the MC Print. Might I say that you’re definitely one of the more talented fighters I’ve seen around here. Very impressive, especially for a newcomer.”

It didn’t take an expert to tell that Ivanka was definitely an experienced fighter. She fought with plenty of skill, far more than the average newbies who thought they could cruise by on power alone.

“We don’t have to start the interview right now if you need some time to rest after your fight. But I thought it would be a good idea to try and get it out of the way quick. I’m sure you’re a busy woman, after all.”

Ivanka beamed at the compliments. "Thank you. Young ones think only strength." She flexed her arm. "But it is technique that gets you ahead." She relaxed her arm and sat down on a bench. She leaned up against the back. Her head shook as the interviewer offered to postpone. "Am fine. We may start." She survived worse beatings. Nothing today was enough to really require more rest than she already got.

"Straight to business then? Alright, Let's get this underway."

Nat decided to stay standing, moving to rest her back against one of the lockers, facing her. She fished her notepad and pen out from her pockets.

"Well, since we're already talking about it, I'd say the best place to start would be your skill." She began, tilting her head slightly to the side, inquisitive. "You obviously have both training and experience. So where'd you learn to fight like that?"

Ivanka debated how much information she should give. She was an honest woman, but she wasn't sure how the reporter or the public would react to her criminal background. She decided to keep it simple but direct. "Self-taught. Was once hunter. I learned patience and weakness detection."

"A hunter, you say? I can only imagine what sort of things you would need those skills to hunt."

Her words might have sounded almost accusatory, but her playful smile would hopefully dissuade that notion. Nat was hardly in a position to judge anyone for having a shady past, even if Ivanka's reticence to speak only made her curious.

"Sounds like you must have been pretty self-sufficient," She continued, "What brought you to the island then? Needed a change of pace?"

Ivanka noticed the reporter's curiosity. Seeing that she was being somewhat boring with her answers, she decided to open up a tad more. "In a sense. Though I didn't realize it at the time." She tapped her fingers on her knee. Now how bad would it be to reveal her crime? She went through rehabilitation and changed since then, but she knew those kids were still attending the school. Likely scarred for life by her actions. "I lived in constant rage. Bouncing from place to place with red-tinted glasses. It took one moment to realize what I was doing and what I needed to do to live a better life. To be a better person."

Nat unconsciously twirled her pen against her pad as she listened to Ivanka, attentive, noting the dragons little anxious tick. Her story was starting to sound familiar to her. Nat's memories of when she first became a Nekomata were hazy, she was a being of instinct, of fury. There was plenty of blood coating her feline claws before the scouts brought her to the island.

"Mmm...I understand," She said with a short nod, eyes soft, sympathetic look in her gaze. "I think many of us on the island can relate. We've all done things we weren't proud of before coming here, before really knowing what all our options are."

She sounded sympathetic, and she wasn't pretending to be either, but she still had an ulterior motive. Nat figured that alleviating Ivanka's concerns with how others might see her crimes might get her to open up a little more.
