Anne had spent the first few weeks of school shirking her responsibilities. She'd been out partying, on dates, or up on the station, doing just about everything except for the things she was responsible for. She wasn't the only one who noticed, either. Her uncle, the head of the family, wasn't at all pleased with how she was acting and had no qualms summoning her to the family estate to admonish her directly and in front of other members of the household. She was told that if she wanted their continued support she needed to get to work practicing her magic.
The hand warmers were a start, sure. They worked decently well and people seemed to like them when she was giving out the extras she'd made, but they weren't nearly enough to impress her uncle. She needed something that would prove she was dedicated to learning their traditions, whether or not that was true, and so she'd arranged with Wednesday to do some research and experiments together. She sat at a desk, waiting with a stack of books on runes and other script-related magic practices from around the world for her friend to show up.

Wednesday arrived promptly, she spent so much time in the library that navigating over to it after class was second nature to her. Her bag was stuffed with books, as usual, but she'd made sure to grab some of the older books from her family's collection before arriving, thinking there might be enough similarities to maybe help Anne out.

"Hey, Anne." She said with a pleasant smile, sliding into the seat across from hers, setting her bag down at her side and starting to reach for her books. "Had a good morning?"

As polite as she wanted to be, it was obvious she was eager to start. The topic of magic was always interesting to her, and working with another form of it even more so.

Anne returned the smile, thankfully just as eager to begin as the other girl. She slid over the book she was already reading, open to a few diagrams of how the runes affect magical power.
"Things have been going pretty well so far, though it's mostly just been gathering books. I only just sat down, so great timing" She replied. She tapped at one of the diagrams on the page, already launching into things.
"So, this is how runes from Northern Europe work. I know that this book also covers the tradition as it developed in Scotland and Ireland as well, but I'm wondering what could happen if we try to work in things from other parts of the world. I think there's similar kinds of magic that come from Egypt and East Asia." She rambled, fingers tracing over the diagrams on the page as she continued to speak.

She nodded along at the explanation, her one eye following her hand along the different diagrams. The European stuff was familiar to her, at least, the rest it took her a moment to read through it all and understand.

"You're definitely bound to get some interesting results if you pull them together." She said, sitting back up, one hand at her chin as she considered. "I suppose before we do all that we should figure out...well. What are you hoping to do? It's always a good idea to have a planned end result, right?"

"We should start with something simple, right? That way there's less that can go wrong." She said, tapping her finger against her chin.
"Maybe we just try and make a book that follows you? That's one of the first things I was taught." She offered. It should be easy enough. The tricky part would be figuring out how to work the other traditions into it. She looked up from the book to Wednesday.
"Any ideas?"

"Hmm...that's definitely doable."

She pulled out one of her books, set it down on the table, then pressed her finger to the cover. She started tracing a few small, swirling symbols on the hard leather, her fingertip leaving behind a faint, white glow as she did. Eventually, she finished, giving it a tap, causing the symbols to glow brighter and the book to hover off the table a few feet, suspended in air by magic force.

"Getting it to follow me would require some ingredients, a bit more work on my end, unfortunately." She continued, sitting back as the book slowly moved back down to the table. "I think...we probably don't want to remake the wheel though, right? Like, we could recreate this kind of effect with all of these, I'm sure, but I'd want to focus on something we can only do by putting it all together."

"You're right, we probably should be going for something new." She agreed, stretching out. "I guess I'm still a little nervous trying to figure this out.." She admitted, looking back down to the book in front of her.

"Okay, we probably shouldn't use any hieroglyphics, then. I really, really don't want to accidentally curse myself." She sighed, starting to think out loud as she tapped her tablet pen against the table.

"Ahahah...yeah, we wanna, um, avoid that." She rubbed the back of her neck, laughing awkwardly. She, naturally, liked to keep the nature of her own curses to herself, and though Anne seemed nice, she certainly wasn't ready to spill the beans on that particular issue just yet.

They wouldn't be an issue today. She knew, somehow, like a whisper in her ear soothing the usual paranoia she felt.

"We don't need to go super crazy if you'd prefer not to, I'll make sure we don't do anything dangerous, so you don't need to worry on that front." She said with a smile, rubbing her hands together briefly, her sleeves shifting enough to get a glimpse of the arcane tattoos that ran up her skinny arms. "How about...what's something you normally struggle with? Something you've wanted to do for a while but never been able to figure out?"

"Right, something I've never been able to figure it out.." She echoed. There was a lot of that, but most of it wasn't the type of thing she wanted to admit to. She was still insecure about her almost complete inability to work outside of ice for anything other than small effects. She shook her head of all of that when an idea popped up and she brightened up once again.
"Anti-fire stones! When I was making those hand warmers I wondered if I could have rocks that absorbed heat and flames, but I couldn't, uh.. I tried pretty much everything and I couldn't figure out anything that didn't end up with.. uh.." She trailed off again before fishing into her bag and pulling out a small lava rock.
"...She used to be a river rock like the other ones but she melted. I've been keeping her around as a reminder to always use the right safety precautions when you're doing magic." She paused again for a moment before adding. "Her name's Elavabeth."

Her face scrunched up ever so slightly as she suppressed a giggle.

"That's, hehe, sorry." She cleared her throat, taking a moment to recompose herself as she considered. "That's...hmm...something like that could certainly be useful, and we should be able to apply a lot of the basic principles of your ice magic to it as well."

She started flicking through the different pages they had between the two of them, ideas already starting to form in her head.

"I think between the two of us and everything we have here we can put together something that'd work. Maybe we could grab one of the empty power training rooms afterwards to test it out?"
