“Hm?”

Evie’s mind had drifted elsewhere as the two of them caught their breath, gaze turning upwards until she caught her attention again, her eyes snapping back over to her.

“What do you mean?” She asked, innocently. “I already told ya, just felt like I could use some exercise y’know?”

She casually shrugged her shoulders, that same smirk crossing her face again, keeping up her usual appearance.

“Is it really that unbelievable that I’d be out here early? I know I have a rep around the campus but come on. You're gonna hurt my feelings Laurie."

"If I thought I could legitimately hurt your feelings, I wouldn't say a damn thing. But fine, fine."

Laurie stretched herself out again, feeling the light soreness from overextending herself in her workout. She also didn't really believe Evie that nothing was wrong - but who was she to judge, honestly? She hid a great number of things from people here. Thank God for the social taboo against casually reading minds.

"Got any plans for the day then? I've got Scout stuff most of it. Get into arguments with people. A full plate, honestly."

"Oh y'know, ditching classes, causing trouble. The uushz'." She said with a dismissive wave of her hand. "Though, no one really gives a shit if you don't turn up to college classes. Doesn't really give me the same ol' rebellious thrill, it's a bummer."

Though, as much as she talked about it, Evie hadn't been getting up to nearly as much shenanigans as she used to. Her reputation was well known, of course, but her little pranks had been getting less and less frequent over the months until she barely seemed to do them anymore.

"Probably nothing as interesting as you seem to be doing." She shifted the talk away from her again, wiggling her eyebrows. "Picking fights huh? Bet that's noooot a great look for a scout. Tsk tsk."

"I don't pick fights. My mama taught me not to do that."

Laurie kicked her leg up to put her foot against the tree. She leaned forward, stretching and making sure that she hadn't pulled anything during the race without realizing it.

"But then again," she added with a grin over at Evie, "my dad taught me to never back down when someone wants to argue or throw hands."

She sighed and stood back up properly, rubbing the back of her neck. "It's hard. Making people understand that I don't hate the supernatural. I just... My family has been fighting back and protecting people from things that would hurt them for generations. Like, sure. Violence is everywhere. But if your neighbor decides to try and kill you, you can fight back against that."

"There's no fighting back against something several times stronger and faster than you. Not normally anyway. I don't get it often, but I see the way people look at me. Monster hunter. Murderer. Nazi. Racist. It's all bullshit, ya know?"
