Despite what many might assume knowing her personality, Evie did, in fact, put some effort into staying fit. Nowhere near as much as she had while part of the circus, of course, but enough to keep her figure at the very least.

It had been on and off lately, though. Forcing herself to actually work out had been something of a struggle, but she'd woken up unexpectedly early that morning and couldn't get back to sleep. She'd long since ran out of pranks she found entertaining, and it was far too early for any of her other usual methods of entertainment. Given the alternative option of staying her room, left alone with her thoughts, she figured she might as well get some exercise in.

A few other people on campus were up and about as she found herself a nice spot under one of the trees on the grounds, clad in workout gear as she stretched her leg up in an impressive display of flexibility. Her lethargy and general expression made it obvious she wasn't really into it, however, more going through the motions than anything else.

Laurie's determination had been ramping up in recent weeks. She was confident in herself, in her ability to blend in with these creatures. She could fake it easily enough that none of them suspected how she really felt about them. Disgust, pure and simple. Mask on, though.

She was up early like she was most days. Out running between those hours when the nocturnal students went to bed and classes began for the diurnal students. She didn't want to be around when the vampires were stalking around.

Movement caught her attention from her periphery as she rounded around a corner. It was Evie, the so-called Gravity Gremlin, also having an early morning run. Laurie hadn't seen her out before, and she felt a tug in her intuition. Taking a b-line towards her, Laurie jogged over to close the distance between them.

"Hey! Good morning. Don't usually see other people out at this time."

She blinked, realising in surprise someone was addressing her, before glancing over. Quickly, her expression was replaced with her usual shithead smirk, and she stopped her stretching to face her fully, mask of her own up.

"Well well well, s'been awhile Wesley Snipes" She giggled, resting her back against the tree. "You look like you're keeping busy."

"Wesley Snipes, huh?" Laurie said with her own shit eating grin, shaking her head as she caught her breath from her run. "Haven't heard that one before. But yeah, I'm always busy. Dad always taught me you gotta maintain your guns." And she flexed, showing off her biceps with a laugh.

"But how're you doing? You don't seem the up-before-dawn-to-work-out type. No offense." She hadn't seen the change in expression, but she knew what a forced cavalier grin looked like. The kind you gave when you got an arm cut off and you made a joke about being all right now before passing out from blood loss. Poor Uncle Jared.

"Well don't let me stop your workout." Evie giggled along with her, blatantly oggling her arms for a moment before winking at her.

"Why do people keep saying that?" She went on with a small pout. "You think I got all this just naturally? Nice abs weren't part of the superpower package I got y'know."

Stepping away from the tree, she flashed a challenging smirk at her while sidestepping the question.

"How 'bout I prove it? Betcha I can run to the fountain and back faster than you, no flight necessary."

Having just started her little impromptu workout she figured she at least had a stamina advantage, even if Laurie was blatantly in better shape.

"I didn't mean that I think you don't work out," she laughed with a shake of her head. "But getting up this early takes a lot of discipline, and frankly..."

Turning her amused smile away from Evie, Laurie looked over at the fountain, judging the distance and whether she thought she could manage to beat her in a race. "Sure, but no flipping my gravity or making me extra heavy either. Okay then, onetwothreego!"

She took off like a shot. Just because there were no powers involved didn't mean she had to exactly play fair. The creatures she'd hunted over the years hadn't ever played fair, by her account. But Evie was correct: she was a bit more worn out from having already done one run. She could keep going, sure, but it was a toss up whether the second or two advantage she'd given herself would actually hold up.

She managed to cut off Evie's next response by suddenly darting away. A smirk spread on her face.

"Ha! Don't think that's gonna help!"

If Evie's at all bothered by the sudden start she gave no indication (she'd totally have done that first if given the opportunity anyway). She laughed as she started to sprint right on after her.

Evie was quick, and she was nimble, powers or no powers. However, she hadn't exactly been keeping up with her full fitness routine, at least not in the way someone in scout training would. Laurie likely wouldn't have any trouble beating her in a race even given the current circumstances.

So clearly the best course of action was to cheat.

Evie's entire body tilted back as she adjusted her gravity, putting her at an angle towards the ground. She proceeded to slide forward, rapidly picking up speed.

"I did say no flying!" She called out with a cackle, realigning herself and resuming her sprint once the distance had been closed.

Laurie glanced back over her shoulder just in time to see Evie rocketing towards her. She leapt, fully expecting the girl to crash into her and kicked herself a bit when she didn't and broke back into a sprint. That jump had cost Laurie some momentum and she probably wasn't going to win now unless she also cheated.

She couldn't just shoot Evie in the leg. That wouldn't be appropriate, and she didn't even have her crossbow on her anymore. So she kept running, preparing herself to take her loss in stride.

She ended the race panting, out of breath, and grinning like an idiot. It reminded her of training with her cousins.

"Well, I can't be mad for you playing to your strengths. Playing fair gets you killed in my old line of work. Good job, though."

Evie came to a stop in front of her, laughing as she raised her hands above her head.

“And the champion reigns supreeeeeeeeeme!” She called out, before cupping her mouth with her hands and letting off a long “Wooooo!

Of course, this didn’t really prove her original point at all, but she was too busy acting smug to really give that much thought. She grinned back at her, though once again her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.

She leaned back against the tree again to rest for the moment, breathing a little harder, though still not that tired compared to Laurie.

“Heheh, Betcha didn’t see that one coming, huh Helsing.”

"You'd be surprised what I can see coming, short stuff," Laurie laughed, her breath slowly returning to normal as she leaned up against the tree as well. "Next time you won't be able to pull the same trick on me."

"So what's up?"

The question came after a long pause that they both took to finish catching their breath and coming down from the high of the sprint. Laurie glanced Evie's direction, her expression cool and contemplative. She knew enough to know that something was up, and Evie was one of the only humans she'd met that didn't seem like a total tool.
