"She would see a man whose cold front was a shield to protect himself from the weariness of the world. A man whose infinite compassion is buried under layers of steel will. A man who is unafraid to make the worst of decisions for the best of reasons. A man who would not be a wanted king, but a necessary one."

Asteria sighed, staring at her glass. The alcohol's effect was hitting her slightly, but was fading away just as quickly. The joys of magical regeneration. "A man I would have made a thriving empire for, simply because you would have been no simple monarch in my world. However, centuries of living have given me a different perspective and I no longer believe or care for politics. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and those that do not hold that vicious mindset are often removed by the ones who do. I appreciate the new information regarding your background, however, as the more I learn about you, the more curious I become."

"But I feel we have gotten off-track from the real original point. Despite you scaring me half to temporary death with your draconic display, I am still quite interested in investing in your restaurant. I have no ill intentions or outrageous demands in exchange for this investment, and once your restaurant succeeds and you wish to pay back whatever I've given you and wash your hands of me, you are free to do so."
She paused, taking another sip of her drink before leaning against a nearby counter-top.

This was an offer too good to be true. Or at least it would have been in Halcyon City. This was the part where Basilio would have normally casually revealed that the building was surrounded by his men, ready to kill everyone inside at his command. But he had no men, no resources, and if he was taking Asteria at face value then he had nothing to worry about. He could easily pay her back later.

"No outrageous demands, you say. Other than, I assume, a nice table and good wine if you ever stop in to visit?" He smirked slightly, a playful gesture he was slowly becoming more familiar with. Basilio the stoic looking figure was not the man he needed to be here. He needed to be approachable.

"Well I see no obvious downside," he said as his smirk softened into a smile. "I mean of course a more formal contract would need to be written up. Forgive me but I am a pragmatist and I hate leaving things to 'he said, she said'. Makes it easier for us to settle disagreements without resorting to killing each other."

"Obviously. A fine wine and a nice table is standard. That's not remotely outrageous." She grinned, taking another sip of her now nearing empty glass. "And a written contract will definitely be written up. I'm not going to throw a large sum of money at you without the proper paperwork. I'm enigmatic and wealthy, not stupid. We can meet with an attorney, get it written up, notarized, and negotiate the finer details. Business deals like this don't need to be complicated."

"...on that note, if you decide to expand into other business ventures, avoid talking to the Fae. They're charming, they're lovely, but the old stories of trickery and half-truths is very much a thing. But they are pleasant, so that's always nice."

Asteria paused. "And another thing. I'd rather not go into a death match scenario; I like the whole aspect of 'not dying'. We both have children who are friendly with one another, and I'd rather not teach them that violence is an appropriate response when a civilized discussion would work just fine."

"I agree wholeheartedly," Basilio said as he finished off his cigarette. It calmed Adraxis somewhat at least, so it wasn't a completely useless habit. He already had been warned about the Fae. And the conclusion Basilio himself had come to was that they would make excellent legal counsel. Should he find himself needing it, that is.

"I am frankly tired of fighting petty fights for no reason. Though if I am honest I still have that tendency in me. I don't think it will be a problem, but fair warning nonetheless. If you ever endanger my son no force on Earth or in Heaven will be able to stop me."

Basilio paised and smiled a bit before adding, "and I would expect precisely the same from you, fair Doctor."

"Don't you worry, my charming dragon. I absolutely adore your son and would never think of any ill will towards him. He has a very bright future and I refuse to deprive the world of that." Her smile was faint, but her body position had relaxed significantly. She was no longer afraid of the man known as Basilio Genovese. She had seen his kindness, his temperament, his willpower. She had enough to assess how to work with the man in the future, and it was going to be fine.

"And I'm not worried about someone coming after my darling Ezra. They are quite capable of taking care of themselves. Between their own abilities and having bonded with some form of entity that grants supernatural powers, I worry more for those who target my sweet child." Asteria grinned, pushing her glass to the side so she could lean on the bar proper.

"Now then, Mr. Genovese, is there anything more I can assist you with this evening? Another drink? Dinner, perhaps?" She paused. "And I realize that I now sound like I'm leading into propositioning you for the evening. Which was not my intention. I'm just trying to be a courteous host."

Basilio kind of chuckled at that last bit, shaking his head. "Dr. Vrall I do believe you are trying to hit on me. It won't work, I assure you. I have long sworn off involving myself with women so obviously married to their work."

There was a beat as he swirled his glass before he finished off his drink. "I'm kidding of course. I'd hate to impose upon you any further, since you are making such a generous offer to me already. How about this then. But I know this game. You will insist it is no imposition at all. We will go back and forth like this for a bit until I relent. So I will skip the formality of it and say this: dinner. At my restaurant, when we open."

"Mr. Genovese. You accuse me of hitting on you, and then you ask me out to dinner at your restaurant? If anything, good sir, I would say that you are doing one of two things. Either you flipped that so you could ask me out on a date to your restaurant, which is somewhat flattering..." She grinned, gently clicking her heels together while continuing her relaxed position against the counter.

"Or the alternate is that you're just messing around because you like to rattle the cage. Which I also appreciate. Although I'm wary to believe that as you've already mentioned your joke-telling skills need some work." Asteria hummed. Mixed signals were always fun, as it was another mystery to be deciphered. Basilio had caught her interest, and he wasn't going to get away that easily. The game was on.

"I suppose we'll have to get to know each other better so you can decide for yourself what kind of game I'm playing here, won't we?" Basilio folded his arms behind his back, quietly cracking his knuckles and thinking to himself. Was he being flirtatious? Possibly. It had been a useful tactic back home, particularly with the likes of Calliope and the Temptress. Women who wanted attention.

"I do appreciate you having this meeting with me however. It has been enlightening and frankly refreshing to see that just because I am in a new place with such a wildly different culture, the games I am used to are so much the same." He cracked the last joint on his last finger and relaxed a bit more, feeling his shoulders sag ever so slightly. "Will there be anything else you need of me right now, Dr. Vrall?"

Asteria frowned. Here she was getting played into this little game of his. She was better than this. How did she let herself get so sucked into this little mind game of Basilio's? She had been alive a lot longer than him, had seen more romantic moments and intimate trysts than he had years on the planet. But here she was, caught in their little dance where he was leading her every step. Such an attractive trait.

Still a bastard, though.

"Cute. Very cute, Mr. Genovese. I have lived a long life, had my share of romance and other fine activities. If you wish to play this game, that's quite alright with me. Courtship has always been a curious affair; I wonder if you'll be able to keep my attention." She moved towards him, a rather devious grin forming. "Asking what I need of you is rather forward, wouldn't you say? What if I asked you to stay for the evening? Put that silver tongue of yours to work." She stopped, turning on her heel and quickly making her way towards the door of the suite.

"But no, I think our business is concluded for the evening. The perks of being immortal is I can wait a long time for your attempts to flirt with me actually mean something or if this is just another case of someone trying to seduce me into a lesser position of a business negotiation. My offer is clear, contact any contract attorney on the island and we'll get the paperwork underway."

"...And I expect a rather fine bottle of wine to go with my private seat on opening night, Basilio Genovese."

Basilio's smirk seemed like a permanent fixture on his face as he saw Asteria, this apparently unflappable immortal as she flapped and faltered to keep up with him. He didn't believe it for a second of course. He had dealt with enough people to know that what you see is rarely a mirror of reality.

"Please, Dr. Vrall. Silver tongue? You think so little of me already? Gold-tongued is far more apt and fitting my demeanor. However I unfortunately don't have time for a tryst with a strange immortal. There's work to be done. I will contact you when I have more of my affairs in order."

He paused at the door, his smug expression falling into a more genuine smile. "Thank you for the conversation, the brandy, and the offer. I won't disappoint you, Doctor." And then he left politely, already making plans on what move to make next in his push forward on Manta Carlos.
