For the Love of Sadness

A small distance away from the Earth's atmosphere a light could be seen, flickering like a candle in the wind. The light began to grow and grow until it became quite large indeed. Suddenly, with a loud kaboom muted by the emptiness of space, in the place of the flickering light, a large ship exploded into existence. The ship was rather ornate, crafted as if it were a large gothic style cathedral. On the bridge of this ship Sarro, the personification of Sorrow itself, sat upon the ships command throne gazing at the world through the ornate window on the bridge. He was surrounded by various pale beings with grim expressions, wearing various robes and coats of white and gray, attending to various instruments to run the ship. In some places beings that were more machine than creature in red robes attended to the machines, whispering and humming hyms and prayers to the machines themselves to ensure they were in working order, some of it in binary. The bridge itself looked as if it was carved from solid stone, intricate statues and carvings covored the walls, depicting creatures of all kinds in various poses and postures of Despair. Behind the command throne was a pair of very large and intricately carved doors made of solid stone, guarded by two very large beings similar to the other white dressed beings, each one wearing tattered white cloaks and carrying very large and very decorated silver axes. All except the ones in red wore silver masks depicting tearful eyes.

Deeper within the bowels of the Disparity, a mighty bell began to solemnly toll, to signal to the rest of the ship that they had arrived at their destination. The mighty stone doors opened for Minna to aproach to witness their arrival herself. Sarro took one last look at Earth before turning his head to Minna.

"So this is the world you spoke of?" He said, his voice sounding as though he was in the deepest throes of a deep depression, and in truth that was indeed the case, as it ever was since the death of his love. But it should also be said that that was how he has always sounded, so few could tell the difference.

Minna loved a dramatic entrance.

In time with the sonorous tolling of the bell, she strode through the doorway. The red fabric of her dress trailed behind her as she walked. Her eyes were on Sarro. She did not so much as glance at the ghastly figures mulling about in the bridge, who only served to intensify the overwhelming sense of sadness hanging heavily in the air of the Disparity.

The dismal atmosphere permeated the entire ship; there was no escaping it. She could feel it from the caboose to the deck to her own living quarters. It kept her from sleeping. Every time she shut her eyes, she felt the elongated wails seeping into her nightmares, their despair tearing out her mind, weighing on her soul like an anvil. She saw unknown faces in the darkness, and pale figures that might have been real. For the first time in a while, she had to hide the bags under her eyes.

The trip was both physically and emotionally taxing, but as she watched the green and blue planet slowly growing in the distance, she knew it was worth it. She smiled to herself. “Yes, this is it. Earth.” She let out a quiet sigh. They could finally get away from the death and destruction in their home galaxy. Minna turned to Sarro. His voice was laden with a certain type of sadness. Oh, how she longed to help him, to mend his broken heart. If she could, she would embrace him in that moment. But she could not. She gently laid her hand on his shoulder. “This island...It’s full of strange creatures and different people. They are like us, but they do not know us. This is a galaxy entirely separate from ours. We can let go of our affairs, if only for a moment.” Would that be enough?

Sarro stared back at the planet before them, on this world was an island filled with an unusually large amount of unique and powerful beings, some gods themselves. He failed to see how exactly a visit to this far away world was supposed to improve his mood, but he trusted Minna, surely if she brought him here then she had something planned that would help him. He glanced back at her as he rose from the ships command throne, Minna had been a good friend as of late, she had been trying so hard to cheer him up within the past few decades. He appreciated her efforts, but he ultimately saw it all as pointless, trying to cheer up sorrow itself.

"I suppose, but can we ever truly let go of such burdens?" He said, not particularly looking for an answer. He laid a hand on Minna's shoulder and looked her in the eyes.

"I appreciate all you're doing to try and comfort me in these dark days of mine, but I can't help but feel you are wasting your time in such efforts. I will try, Minna, but I can't promise results." he said before walking towards the large doors.

"Come, we shall head to the transport chamber, head to the surface."

There was a sort of hopelessness that lied behind Sarro’s words. His voice, though unchanging, was sounding notably more depressed than usual. And his eyes, hidden behind his helm, were like a stormy sea of tears, drowning any source of happiness he found. Minna wanted to heal him. But was he right? Could anyone truly help the God of Sorrow? Thinking of it, that no matter how hard she tried, her efforts would be for naught...that was truly depressing.

Minna broke eye contact. Perhaps it was better to keep her thoughts to herself.

“Yes. Let’s,” she replied, agreeing to go to the transportation chamber. She let him lead the way. This ship was still foreign to her, and she wasn’t bothered with memorizing its layout. She was too busy anticipating their arrival on Earth.

As they walked in eerie silence, she again felt the despair of the ship. An inaudible whisper creeped into the edge of her mind and filled the empty hall. Slowly, it grew into a loud whimper. It reached a crescendo, the sound of sobbing coming from every direction at once, echoing around her brain. Minna shut her eyes. The cacophony died down. It was all in her head, but the mental barrage felt all too real. The sooner they got off this ship, the better.

Sarro drifted ahead of her. This trip was for him. Bearing the ship was for him. Minna was trying, trying, trying so hard for him. And it would work. They would grow closer. She would help him. She knew it.

“You know, there is a remedy for every ailment,” Minna broke the silence, “Change. Time. Love. Sometimes, we need to hold onto our burdens for a while. Until, slowly, they become easier to bear. They fade until they don’t hurt us anymore--Still present, but not imposing. They become a memory.” She strode to his side and looked into those oceany eyes. “Sarro, you are grieving. But you are not hopeless.”

Sarro glanced at Minna as she spoke, he could tell the heavy emotional weight permeating the ship was getting to her. It was an unfortunate side effect, his predecessor was not so forgiving in his duties when he owned this ship, Sarro had his acolytes trying to cleanse the ship of its wailing curse, but the damage was deep and ardous to remove. Though his battered and scarred helmet hid his reaction, Sarro smiled a little when Minna finished speaking.

"I wish I had your positivity. You always know what to say." he said. After passing many guilded halls they arrived in the chamber. Sarro pulled out what appeared to be a ball of water. He also pulled out a small bell and gave it a ring. At the sound Grief, his grief-strider companion, came skittering down another hallway, his legs were curled inside his shell so he could fit in the hallway. Once he joined them, Sarro dropped the ball of water, after which the ball grew into a large globe of water surrounding them. Once it enveloped them the floor opened up beneath them, dropping them towards the planet below.

They rapidly descended, evenually passing through the clouds. As the city came in sight, the globe veered toward a nearby park. When they neared the ground the globe slowed its descent until they gently touched the ground. Just like that the globe fell apart dumping water onto the ground it's occupants completely dry.

A smile came upon Minna’s face. “You flatter me,” she said with a lilt, his praises fueling her confidence.

It felt like an eternity had passed when they finally reached the chamber at the end of the halls. Before Minna knew it, Sarro had already started preparing for their transport. He readied a sphere of water and a small bell, giving it a tap.

A light ding rang through air, followed by the echoing sound of claws on metal. Minna turned and came face-to-face with the grotesque mug of a roach. Immediately, she recoiled, taking a step back and raising an arm as if to shield herself. She was stuck in the position for a moment, staring straight at the revolting creature. It was so gigantic, it barely fit in the room, and it looked like it was hiding more of itself underneath a hardened shell. The legs, bulging out, were spindly and insect-like. It took her a while to realize that Sarro must have summoned the thing. Could it be his...companion?

Still repulsed, Minna lowered her arm. The notion that this creature belonged to Sarro didn’t change the fact that it was absolutely nauseating. She averted her eyes. As soon as she did, a water screen surrounded and enclosed the three of them. The floor disappeared beneath and they started falling to the surface of the earth. Minna’s stomach flipped. She felt like reaching out to Sarro, but doing so would seem improper. Instead, she crossed her arms, holding them tightly to her chest as they descended. The planet grew and grew in the distance, its bumps and ridges becoming discernable in no time at all. Even closer and the island was visible. They soared through the air, towards an opening in the middle of the tall buildings and roads. Minna could see the ground. She closed her eyes.

Her feet gently touched the ground. Opening her eyes, she saw that the water had disappeared and they were left standing in the middle of the park. “Ah!” she breathed. Her muscles relaxed as she took in their surroundings. Supernatural beings milled about, some looking close to human and others entirely outlandish. In the distance, the city skyline was visible. The landscape was altogether mundane, but the little island had a unique charm to it. Best of all, Minna felt free. “This place is more brilliant than I remember.” Of course, it was infinitely better than the ship she had spent days living on.

There were so many things to do, it was almost overwhelming. Minna didn’t know where to start.

“Oh, Sarro, you simply must see the city! I will have to show you the shops; perhaps we could visit a cafe later. I do hope you’ll enjoy it here, it’s so very brilliant."
