Elizabeth's eyes stayed a while longer on the man with the crimson eyes even as they turned around and William pulled her along. And then she turned to look at her arm and up at her friend. For a moment, she had an unsure face on, her eyes narrowed and her brows raised, because she feared that this might have been too much and that William was...

"William?" she spoke up, though her voice was too soft that she wasn't sure he'd hear her. His hold on her arm was careful and it didn't hurt, but still. She tugged at her arm and tried to pull away.

Thinking about it at the moment, Elizabeth realized William might have been the only person who has had contact with her this much. She might have gotten a bit too comfortable around him and ended up becoming unmindful and reckless.

"Are you angry? I'm sorry we strayed too far. We're heading back to the campus now, aren't we?"

William had said that he knew the way back to the school, but after they began walking, he wasn't so sure. They had taken many twists and turns to try and find the animals. He sighed quietly.

Something akin to a whisper reached his ear, and he looked back at Elizabeth. She was trying to remove her arm from his grip. He immediately let go and, finding nothing else to do with his hands, shoved them into his pockets.

"Did you say something?"

As soon as Elizabeth voiced her concerns, William couldn't help but smile. However, he quickly wiped the smile from his lips in case she took the gesture as a teasing one.

"Of course I'm not angry," he said reassuringly. "I mean, sure, we got scolded, but it wasn't anything too serious. Trust me when I say that you're not the only one at fault. I honestly should have said something sooner. But again, it's not too serious, and neither of us are in any trouble."

Will thought for a few more seconds. "We don't have to go back to the campus right this second, but we should at least get a little closer to it."

It was truly a relief to hear William's careful words. Elizabeth felt lighter and less anxious knowing that William wasn't angry, even though it didn't change that she still felt like a very troublesome person. "That's true. We're both unhurt and that man just now didn't seem as if he'd tell on us."

She knew she owed William more gratitude today than she had expressed. Even though the stranger from before didn't pose any thread, William had still stood protectively in front of her, whether he meant to or not. It was nice to have a caring friend! She'll have to do something next time to make up for this misadventure of theirs, but for now, she had nothing but words to give to William.

"William, you're--what's the expression..? Oh! William, you're really cool!"

She trusted he knew the way, because she definitely had no idea anymore. In any case, they'd be fine as long as they get out of the patch of thick trees, since William might be able to fly up to look for directions then.

William could tell that Elizabeth was relieved. He didn't want her to feel upset on his behalf. In fact, he didn't want anyone to feel upset on his behalf, but in this instance, that rule applied to her especially.

As Elizabeth struggled to find the right words, and eventually found them, William couldn't suppress the smile that appeared on his face. He also couldn't suppress the laughter that was bubbling up inside of him, and after a few seconds, he was doubling over as the laughs came pouring. He honestly had no idea why he was laughing so hard.

The laugh came to an almost abrupt halt as he realized he, indeed, had no idea where they were going. The trees were so close together that the school was nowhere in sight.

A simple solution came to mind. "Alright. I think we're gonna have to fly," he admitted. "I honestly have no idea where we're going right now. I'm sure you wouldn't mind, would you?"

Elizabeth froze when William began to laugh, he laughed so much that it confused her as to why. She had only said that he was cool, she had learned the expression after hearing others' conversations, and she wanted to give him a compliment like that. It was an honest opinion. Why was he laughing?

Her confusion and curiosity hadn't been sated before William calmed down and already began talking about their situation. Elizabeth continued to stare at him, though she did give him a nod, a slow nod, and eventually managed to shake off her baffled state.

"I don't mind at all. But we need to make it past the trees first, right? Will you be okay?" She was thinking it might hurt William if they got caught in branches while trying to fly.

When William saw the look on Elizabeth's face, he quickly moved to explain himself. Although, before he did, a brief sense of embarrassment washed over him. He truly had exaggerated. He considered not explaining it at all, but he couldn't leave Elizabeth thinking something else.

"Well, you know..." He struggled to find the right words. "You said that I'm cool, and, well, I just thought that, in the literal sense, I'm not really cool. You know, 'cause of the fire and all." He scratched the side of his head with one finger. "In hindsight, it wasn't really all that funny. Probably shouldn't have laughed that hard...."

Will began looking around, searching for a change in subject. "But yeah, as for the trees, we should probably walk a bit before we start flying. Don't wanna set the trees on fire or anything."

Elizabeth was still baffled, but William made sense. She hadn't thought of that, actually, she just really wanted to use a modern expression to tell him what she thought. She shrugged. "I'll make a better compliment next time."

When William talked about the trees catching fire, Elizabeth briefly looked around and tried to see where the path they were currently following would lead them. There was more light ahead, which meant the ground was more exposed to the sun there. She smiled at her finding, and quickly pulled William with her as she headed for the bright patch of land.

"Here! I think it's a good place, don't you?" she asked him while looking at the space between the trees, and the blue sky beyond. They were going to fly again, and Elizabeth realized they'd probably be in a more serious mess if she wasn't with him, or if he didn't have the ability to fly. She's been relying on him; her own abilities have been useless so far. "I'm sorry I'm not much help, William. I'll do my best to be more useful next time!"

Well, technically she could clear the branches for them if she wanted, but she'd really hate to ruin nature when it wasn't very necessary. Surely William would hate to resort to that, too. Fortunately they didn't have to do that.

"Your compliment was fine," Will said as he was pulled along, "and thank you for it. I just like to think of random things sometimes."

When they got to the spot where the light shone through, Will examined the space. At first glance, it wouldn't seem big enough for his large wings to fit through, but he knew just how close he could tuck his wings to his body if need be. He should have plenty of space, even with Elizabeth in tow.

Will put a hand on her shoulder reassuringly. "Hey, try not to think like that, alright?" he said. "Certain situations are better suited for certain people. For example, I happen to be good with safely falling from big heights, but how good would that be when we're on the ground?"

That question brought about another question of his: "Hey, what kind of powers do you have, anyway? We've never really talked about it."

Elizabeth nodded. While what William said made perfect sense, it didn't exactly remove her feeling of uselessness. But there wasn't anything she could do about it, so she'd instead keep her promise to be more helpful next time. And also maybe keep them from getting in trouble in the first place.

"Oh!" When William asked about her powers, her eyes shot up at his face, giving him a look that showed that she completely didn't realize she hadn't told him yet. She's already known about his abilities, some of it anyway if not all, the first time they met, but she never had her chance to show him hers.

She thought it wouldn't hurt to borrow some mana from the air to give a little demonstration. She held her hand out, then small particles that looked like shining dusts suddenly began to compress into a layer of light on her palms. "I'm a mage, but I use mana for all of my abilities," she explained. "This is mana. It looks like light in its raw form, but it's in fact compressed energy from nature. And I have to be careful handling it because it's dangerous, but..." Slowly, Elizabeth pushed the layer of mana against William's chest. It would seep into his body like a comfortable warmth that would quickly spread into his entire body. "I can heal the sick and the injured, or supply strength for the weary."

She wasn't sure it worked for all kinds of creatures, she wasn't sure if William would feel it, or even need it, but she wanted to do it anyway. So when she was done, and she's dropped her hands, she asked him, "Do you feel different? I gathered maybe this trip and all the flying might tire you, so I should relieve the stress in your body at least."

William watched with extreme fascination as Elizabeth explained the concept of mana. He had heard the word before, but never knew what it really meant, and had never seen it until now. The shiny particles coalesced on her palm, and William was speechless as the mana was pushed into his chest.

Almost immediately, a warmth spread throughout his body that was much different from his own. This one made the tension in his muscles release, and a weight that he hadn't even known had been there was lifted off of his shoulders. He felt like he had just had a good night's rest.

However, something else happened that completely threw Will off guard. His wings suddenly appeared on his back, yet they formed slower than usual. Once they fully formed, they reached up to the sky, as if trying to touch the Sun. Then, they fell back into their normal state.

Will didn't even acknowledge this strange phenomenon. He was too focused on his new relaxed state. He didn't even realize his eyes had been closed until he opened them. "Wow...." He took a few seconds to find the right words. "How can you call yourself useless when you can do things like that? That felt amazing!"
