Agnes was growing more and more frail, she could feel it. Like a small hit could snap her and send her back to the vortex the shrink at the islets had spent months fishing her out of. At this point she had a distant look in her eyes, as she looked somewhere past Valli. She heard his words, and shook her head.
"I ran away right after, and the scouts found me in the sewers."

She was somewhere else, somewhere far away. Lost in her own head.

But she'd given Valli the information he needed. He let the silence sit for a few moments, letting her get lost in the memory, and then he tried to pull her back.

"I know this is difficult to talk about, Agnes," Valli said, making a point of using her name, "but thank you for speaking about it with me. Do you want to continue?"

Agnes wasn't exactly reliving the night she had come home to find her mother dead and her father about to kill her siblings too. But she was definitely remembering it, and it made her feel weak and young, like she was a child again when her parents had just started abusing her. Back then her siblings had helped Agnes feel strong again, but now they weren't here and Agnes was just weak.

Valli did pull Agnes back to some extent, and her eyes focused a bit as she heard his words. Agnes looked at him and opened and closed her mouth a couple of times before she was able to get words out.
"I don't know...I'm not a mess yet, so...I think I can continue."

She was together. Upset, absolutely, but it was something she could talk about. Something he could hopefully help her out of.

"In moments of crisis," Valli said, "we don't think clearly. We say things that we don't mean. I'm sure you'll be able to think of times you've done exactly that. The things that we say--especially to those we love--aren't necessarily what we mean."

Agnes could think of many occasions when she had said what she didn't mean, when she had been human. But she was sure her siblings had meant those words they said, they had really seen Agnes as just a monster. Who really could blame them? She had drained their father in front of their eyes.
"I bet they're much worse off than me, and I'm not there. At least they have each other..."
Agnes muttered, mostly just repeating her thoughts out loud. They had each other, they didn't need Agnes.

Much worse off then her. Maybe. There was no telling what her family life was like, and Valli tapped his fingers on his leg, considering.

"I'm sure the scouts ensured they would be taken care of, one way or another," Valli said, "but that doesn't change how you feel about things. The things we say in moments of weakness can hurt more than any targeted insult could ever, because in many cases they feel more real. But they aren't any more real. They might be real in that moment, but not in the long run."

"If they didn't ensure their safety I wouldn't be here obediently listening to what the academy says."
The temper Agnes kept so strictly hidden and buried flared a bit when there was a threat in her tone. Back in the islets they had told her Agnes' siblings were safe, and she had believed them. One thing Agnes had noticed from the academy was that they didn't talk shit. The scouts had been cool, and if Agnes ever heard her siblings had been mistreated she would hunt down the one responsible.

"I have already decided I won't see them if they don't want to see me first. I got no right approaching them after what I did."

She had very, very strong feelings about that. That much was clear, and Valli was very careful with his wording.

"What would you say you did to them, exactly?" She'd dodged around the point. Valli suspected it was that sort of nebulous I did bad things, because there didn't seem to be--from what he'd seen--an exact reason. For leaving them behind? For killing their father? For letting them see?

Agnes frowned slightly, hadn't she already said what she had done to them? Why was Valli making her repeat herself?
"I left them to that shithole, I caused them to see and experience stuff they weren't strong enough to handle, I was a shitty big sister."
Agnes' breath caught when she called herself big sister, she hadn't done that in months. Thankfully Agnes didn't need to breathe, and she just looked down, squeezing her hands in fists.

"There's an important difference between the things we do to others, and the things we allow to be done to others. They might feel the same, but they're very different," Valli explained, leaning back in his chair slightly as she looked away. But the line of conversation he'd tried at wasn't going anywhere fast.

So it was time for something new.

"Do you think you've broken it in a way that can't be fixed?"
