Hal smiled-- the small genuine one he almost never shows. For a short moment he would believe that she was acknowledging him but he quickly shrugged the thought away. He didn't want to bring his own hopes up. She might have admitted her intrigue of him (because she was actually talking to him properly) but he stopped himself from hoping it was going to go anywhere. With both of them being cautious of other people, she might just be wary of him all the same.

"That's good..!" he said after she finished her words. "If you do think you're better than before... I think that's good. I'm sure someone's gonna come along. I don't know, someone who'd stand out among the others I think."

For one thing, Hal was thinking about himself--he wanted to find someone he could trust and who would trust him all the same, but it might have come out differently. Hal wouldn't have noticed either way.

Watching him carefully as he spoke, she saw him give her a short smile, that looked a bit more hopeful than she would have imagined. It surprised her, as she didn't think that she could really make people want to smile, or be happy. "I guess so. Someone who stands out." She chuckled softly at his finishing words, finding it funny as to how he had said it. "And who do you suggest?" She questioned him. "You?" She smiled lightly for a second, wanting to see his reaction, but then that smile faded as she thought to what she had just said. 'What if that was what he was implying?' She asked herself in her head, now a but worried of what he would reply.

Hal waited for Claire to respond but half of it was only her echoing what he had said. But the other half certainly caught him off guard.

'And who do you suggest? You?'

Hal didn't quite think too much into what he said but now that he thought about it, it did sound like he was implying that. He wasn't really thinking of it that way; he was being selfish and thinking it in his perspective.

Hal turned his gaze away from Claire, hoping that the dark lighting could hide the flushed color of his face. "Wh-what would have given you that idea? "

Hal was retracing everything he had said and it would have been expected it would spiral down to that question. But Hal wasn't all that attentive, after all. Not there wasn't any taking it back.

Smiling and letting her worries flush away as she saw his reaction, it was clear that that was what he had implied, even if he hadn't been aware of it. "Well, what you are doing, right now, is a pretty good indicator." She felt a sudden boost of confidence, and maybe that was because she wasn't the one saying that she was right for him. "I didn't mean it literally at first, but by your reaction it was kind of obvious." She stated for him, giving him a clear answer. As she blushed lightly, she stepped half a step closer to him. "It was a pretty ballsy move on your part, but you could be right."

"I didn't mean anything like that!" Hal protested, he scooted forward a bit to the edge of the rock he was sitting on while he made his point. "I wasn't saying it like that- I just meant you have to try harder but-- I-I didn't say anything about it being me..!" Ah, how to get out of this situation, he wondered. He was already stammering; he probably wouldn't get out if it easily.

"Look, I'm... not really... that reliable or something. I mean, as a friend. I don't know, I don't actually leave a good impression on people 90% of the time. So. You can forget I said anything like that. It's kinda embarrassing." Hal continued, his tone gradually turning into a mumble.

Claire laughed almost silently to herself, finding it funny as to how he was trying so hard to hide what he had said. "I don't just forget so easily." She said harshly in his direction, batting her eyes at him. Feeling her blush slowly go away, she realized that she was back to her old self. She wasn't even sure what to do at that moment, as she could see that if she knew trying to change his mind on what he had most likely implied, she would only push him away further. "You left a pretty good impression on me, if I can say that without you blushing some more." Knowing that even if he had meant it, that he was going to be stubborn, which made er happy that she wasn't in his shoes, she nodded her head in failure. "Fine if you didn't mean it then you didn't. I'm not going to tease or humiliate you if you think that I would care what you said." Claire finished coldly, becoming a bit angry with the boy's shyness. Sighing heavily as she relaxed her shoulders, she thought back to what he had said. "You said that you're only reliable as a friend though, what does that mean?"

Hal let out a heavy sigh, thankful that Claire let his slip up slide. But he regret even letting it slip in the first place. And given her reaction, it was better off if he hadn't tried so much to deny it. He did blush a little from her saying he made a pretty decent impression. His carelessness could get him to trouble sometime though.

Hal's shoulders dropped a bit, "No, I really mean I'm not that reliable enough to be anyone's friend. Even if I want to be, I don't think I'm the kind that'll can be the supportive anyone." There he goes again, talking without thinking. Hal was quiet for a second when he lightly kicked the dirt in front of him. "I mean, I'm probably more of a handful, than being the helpful one,".

Another sigh, Hal dropped his face onto his hands, "Sorry, I'm just talking nonsense now," he said, though his words were muffled.

Listening ever so carefuly to the boy's words, she was getting sick of him only talking about himself in a negative way. She knew that he wasn't as bad as he was mamking himself out to be, and even if the boy had annoyed her and made her want to rip his head off at first, she also hadn't been the nicest. That was who she was. She wasn't one of those girls that you go to to share all of your secrets or to talk to if you wanted moral support. She wasn't used to being someone's freind. She was was though, getiing the same type of vibe from him as he talked. "Stop." She rang out to him, as he finsihed his muffled sentence. "You're just making yourself sound like the bad guy, or the guy that people want to pick on."

She sighed heavily in his direction, trying to see as to how she could try to help him. Leaning down slowly, she placed a hand lightly on his shoulder, bieng careful not to feel as if she was pushing him down. "You're fine. Besides you not liking animals as much as I do, and form us not getting along at first, which pretty much happens with everyone, you're pretty cool." Claire really did hope that her words weren't meaningless to him, as she could even tell that she was going above and beyond what she usually did for others around her. "You can be my friend, and you can test out all of those mean things that you just said about yourself, on me." Hopefully he would get her point and consider what she was offering him.

'You're just making yourelf sound liike the bad guy, or the guy that people want to pick on.'

Hal groaned as he dipped his head low. She was right. Hal had a few times before they called him 'the bait'. That was pretty much it. "Sorry, it's... a bad habit." It was beyond habit--it's been in his system for longer that it should that it's almost engrained in his thoughts. But Claire seemed to be trying to give an effort to revoke everything he said about himself.

"I'd probably be so done with me right now if I were in your shoes," Hal jested, letting out a short, awkward chuckle. Claire wasn't that bad. He probably wouldn't even have thought that she was if they weren't at each other's throats at first.

"So, what, I guess that's a challenge for the both of us then?" It might be an understatement to say 'it wouldn't hurt to try' but there were other dumb popular quotes that would basically tell him to just go for it.

Smiling at his response, it seemed that her words had spoken to him. "Good. I'm glad that you accepted my challenge." She said without hesitation. It had taken a lot of energy for Claire to try to help him, as it half seemed like he wanted help, and half seemed like he never wanted to see her face again. She chose to stick with her gut and help him, and it seemed as if it had paid off. Taking her hand off of his shoulder, she then sat beside him on the rock, looking at him with a smile. With her right hand, she reached behind the boy and patted him on the back, very firmly. "But now you have to put up with me." She giggled like a little girl as she leaned backwards on the rock, almost in a laying position. "Now stop sulking and act like you just got a new friend."
