Like Faye, Orion was quick pick up on the initial nuances of shaping the clay as it spun at a casual pace on the pottery wheel. At first he was letting his hands run dry, causing the clay to scrape off onto his palms. Then he was wetting his hands a little too much, and the clay began to drip off in noticeable trickles. Eventually, he picked up on how much water he should be using, and the clay began to gain height and take shape. Unfortunately, it was at that point that Faye seemed to be losing her touch.
He looked up at Faye with a hint of concern in his eyes. Her irritation could be felt and he hoped that the learning experience was not ruining their time together. Even when he slowed the wheel down slightly for her, she seemed to be stuck in a downward spiral of frustration.
"Alright. Hold on. I'll show you what I've been doing."
The wheel slowed to a stop as Orion removed his clay-covered hands from the vase-in-progress and stood up. Using his foot to scoot the pedal over to Faye's side, he placed it in front of her and took up position behind her. With his front nearly pressed against her back, he looked over her shoulder and put his hands on top of her's.
"You're in charge of the spinning now, Faye. Go easy, it's more sensitive than it looks. I'll guide your hands."
Orion was nearly whispering into her ear as he guided her hands and fingers over the clay, coaching her on how much pressure to apply and where to put it.
"Like that... Just like that..."
