Name: Cyril Dorne
Age: Current life is around 200 years old. He is 24 in appearance.
Birthday: February 3 (current life)
Gender: Male
Species: Half elf, half human
Category: Staff
Work: Physician
Appearance Description:
Just like full-blooded elves, Cyril has an inborn elegance to his appearance, though his features were very much human compared to his moon elven mother. He has pointed ears behind wavy golden strands of hair, which he has cut to shoulder level to blend in the modern world a bit better, long eyelashes hiding a pair of bluish purple eyes, thin but long and slightly more bronze-ish shade of eyebrows over them, and skin white and smooth as cream. This beauty was covered and stained by the grease and dirt of the streets during most of his younger years, until a noble family from Italia decided to take him in. Since then, he has been made to wear suits, sometimes with frills, even. He was also taught how to act prim and proper, fit for his and his masters' images, and since then has learned to always present himself to other people with a straight back. He prefers simple outfits, however, and nowadays is usually seen wearing simple button up shirts or t-shirts with slacks or jeans.
He is six feet tall, and his body is slim and curvy enough to be considered quite feminine. He has a scar running through his right cheek—the only unevenness found on his body's surface.
Personality Description:
Cyril is more human than elf when it comes to his personality, and he is as harsh as he is beautiful. He often speaks with poisonous words, though most often true, and blankets this strong personality under another that is as sweet and intoxicating as chocolate. Needless to say, he treats the people he likes with care and attention and devotion, and treats everyone else with either caution and detachment or blunt hostility. He is very good at handling people, though. He is able and actually very skilled at putting on a fake though rather small smile and kind tone to those who approach him that he cannot bark at. This has made him quite popular among all kinds of crowds and connections, and also among other people aware of his existence, whether they were people he's met during his studies or merely strangers who have heard of him from somewhere.
However, as calculated a person that he is, there are times that Cyril would snap and his objective and composed side would disappear altogether. On random occasions he becomes very full of sadness and hatred towards himself and towards the world, and these episodes will usually be followed by occasions of aggressiveness. Whether it is the positive or the negative kind is never certain. Such might have been caused by the incidents in his youth, and Cyril might have developed this complex either as a defense mechanism, or because his experiences have somehow broken him. Maybe both. But Cyril never talks about his feelings openly.
He is self-centered and selfish in his own way, but people may usually not realize that at all.
Species Abilities:
1. Prolonged life - having elven blood running through his veins, he lives a very long life, with his body stopping to age at his strongest and most beautiful state (from 21-25 years old).
2. Enhanced Precision (Movement and Senses) - Cyril's movements are swift and precise. He is agile and flexible, and he can move quickly even in rough terrains, his movements on par with professional athletes especially those doing free running. Because of his good control over his body, he is able to wield a slender sword effectively, although he is bad with anything heavy or anything that may slow him down.
It is an innate ability that he has good eyes and hearing, enough for him to pick up small changes in a person's body language, overhear gossips clearly, or track down animals when hunting. He is good at meticulous observations in general, and can still see or hear things clearly and with much precision even while moving very quickly. With that said, Cyril's movements are all very careful.
He can see for as far as 30ft even in very low light, as long as there's at least one source of light (moon, stars, glow in the dark things, a distant street light, a small torch or flashlight) and it is not completely pitch black. Since his eyes are sensitive, sudden changes in lighting may hurt his eyes and stun him for a couple of seconds. In the case that his eyes have adjusted to low light and something bright suddenly flashes nearby, the sudden brightness may stun him for a couple of seconds at least, longer and much more painful if the lights are much brighter and closer. In the case that a bright environment suddenly goes dark, Cyril will not be able to adjust right away, and will be unable to see for a couple of seconds.
Similarly, his sensitive hearing will be able to pick up even soft sounds, so loud and near ones may stun him and hurt his head. He also needs a couple of seconds to recover.
Because of his good sight, Cyril has also managed to master shooting with bow and arrow, and can manage to shoot accurately up to 300m, as long as the the weapon's material enables him to do so. Since big guns are heavy, this accuracy doesn't apply to them and Cyril skips the idea of using them altogether.
3. Advanced Maturity - Cyril has lived a long life if compared to other humans, who are half of what he is. Even during his early years, the half elf's mind has matured and learned many things quite quickly, and this has let him survive the harsh world even at such a young age. At the moment, this enables him to think of things as rationally and objectively as possible, emotions dulled and no longer effective in influencing his decisions, unless he is in an episode. This ability also enables him to learn things more quickly, and to retain them in his memories better.
4. Innate Magical Affinity - Although it takes time to master one form of magic, Cyril has a natural affinity to it, and therefore senses magical energy, forces, or objects from a distance, depending on how far and how strong or concentrated the energy is. In other words, he can sense any change in the amount of magical energy in his surroundings, for example if a strong magical being suddenly appears nearby. He'd sense magical living beings until a hundred feet of radius away from him. If he is, however, in a place where magic is too strong, too concentrated, or there are simply too many magical beings or objects around, this sense of his gets confused and numbs.
5. Talent for Healing - While this is nothing supernatural, Cyril has a natural ability of a healer. He knows instinctively how to brew medicine for common diseases and for physical injuries, and throughout his life has learned many useful techniques. Because of this, he avoids injuring or killing others, if there is no necessity to do so, as such acts would weaken his affinity towards healing.
Powers:
Spirits Summoning: Cyril has learned how to communicate with spirits, especially but not limited to those of nature, and he has learned how to form a contract with them. He can summon the contracted spirits anytime he wishes, by calling their name that he has given them, and saying "come" or any other word with equivalent meaning.
They cannot stay in the mortal world for too long. The maximum is two days straight, if they do not activate their powers. The more they use their powers, the shorter their time will be (limits added on each spirit's details).
Cyril can only have 5 contracts at a time, and so far has contracts with three. While they have their own other abilities, these are the only ones Cyril can borrow or use on his own:
1. Aedein - An Earth spirit who uses music magic. She plays a golden harp and sings, and anyone who hears the music will risk falling into a hypnotized-like state, which enables Cyril to give commands. The effect of the song is only as strong as one's willpower is weak, and doesn't affect anyone who can't hear it. Those who are quite far and couldn't hear the music clearly due to background noise or other sorts of noise are also less affected, depending on how clear they hear the music or how muffled it is by other sounds.
Limit: Her song can affect the ten closest people to her at most. She usually needs to sing for at least a minute, but if her targets fight back and she needs to sing longer, she would also need to sing stronger and longer, which would exhaust her energy. For every minute she sings, she decreases her time in the mortal world by an hour, and when she goes back, Cyril would also have to wait for the same amount of time she spent in the mortal world before resummoning her. Any sort of damage that might work on spirits will automatically send her back to the spirit world, completely disabling Cyril from summoning her for another two days.
Proof of contract: a small golden mark shaped like the spirit's harp behind Cyril's left ear.
2. Hafoc - A familiar spirit that takes the form of a hawk. He mostly helps Cyril in gathering information as he can hide or reveal itself at will to other people, and also helps with daily tasks or gathering ingredients for potions. He can also take the form of a man, but only for four hours at a time at the most.
Limit: He can stay in the mortal world with Cyril for two days straight no matter what his form is, but similar to Aedein's condition, Cyril will also not be able to summon him again for the same amount of time he had previously spent in the mortal world. So if Hafoc stays for an hour and leaves, Cyril will be able to summon him again after another hour. Hafoc doesn't necessarily need to go back immediately to the spirit world if his physical body has been damaged, but when he does, Cyril will be unable to summon him for another day. Can come and go between the mortal and spirit world on his own will, but the rules and time limits mentioned still apply.
Proof of contract: Black claw marks on Cyril's right shoulder.
3. Niv - An ice element spirit who can conjure ice and snow from water or vapor into any shape she pleases. She can also form pointed ice crystals which can be used as weapons, and can create thick ice walls that can serve as shield. The ice are, however, only as hard as the coldest and hardest ice there is on earth, and heat of course can melt it.
Limit: Has similar time limits to Aedein and Hafoc in that she can only stay in the mortal world for the maximum of two days at a time, unless she uses her powers. She can only create 1200lbs' worth of ice and/or snow at maximum when summoned, but doing so will require her to immediately go back to the spirit world afterwards, to rest, and this will keep Cyril unable to summon her for an entire week. She loses an hour of stay in the human world for every 25lbs' worth of ice/snow she makes. If she doesn't reach her maximum output of 1200lbs, the same rules as Aedein would apply: Cyril must wait for the amount of time she had previously spent in the mortal world before summoning her again. If damaged by an attack effective to spirits, she must also immediately go back to heal. During this time, Cyril will be unable to summon her for two days.
Proof of contract: A small blue spiral line beside Cyril's right collarbone.
Cyril can summon all three, and just three, at the same time by now, but only very briefly, sixty minutes at most. Doing so would consume all of his strength and would leave him completely exhausted and vulnerable afterwards. He can summon two at a time to up to three hours, with the same effect. He would have to avoid reaching these time limits if he wants to avoid using up all his energy.
Of course, Cyril didn't 'just happen to come across' all these spirits. Aside from coincidental meetings, one must learn first of a spirit's summoning circle or some other conditions, make them, and learn the right spell to call it for the first time, or when it isn't under a contract yet. Sometimes, summoning circles also need particular substances or materials in order to open.
Potion Maker: Cyril has also learned the arts of potion making, and is quite skilled at creating healing potions.
He's had a journal of sorts where he took down all his recipes from natural stomach ache medicine to elixirs, but he had lost most of the pages of this journal, so he is limited to making the following:
1. Potion for external wounds - one sip to heal all external injuries; doesn't work for stabbed organs
Ingredients rarity: common
Ingredients: made up of combined juices of usual healing herbs found in forests.
2. Potion for internal injuries - one bottle (8oz.) to heal all internal injuries; includes damaged organs, internal bleeding, bone damages; cannot regenerate lost organs or bones
Ingredients rarity: slightly rare
Ingredients: most ingredients are plants found in temporal forests, serving as counters for the side effects of the main ingredient. The main ingredient is the extracted juice of golden night flowers, which can only be harvested and juiced in the evening when the moon is present and the flowers are hit with its light. Without the counter ingredients, the flower's juice when induced can cause hallucinations. These flowers are usually found on mountain tops.
3. For poisoning and sensory damages - one sip to cure poison and venom; must be boiled and sniffed for paralysis, hallucinations, poison-induced blindness, and sensations caused by manipulation/attack on nerves
Ingredients rarity: very rare
Ingredients: made up of mint oil, extracts of common healing plants, and any of the following: dragon scale/unicorn hair or horn/phoenix blood
4. For viral infections - heals colds and other diseases that might be caused by a virus or parasite; one sip for less serious conditions, one bottle for full blown diseases.
Ingredients rarity: common
Ingredients: made from extracts of different herbs that grow in dark and damp parts of a forest (in Manta Carlos, these are found in the forbidden forest).
5. For bacterial infections - heals any disease caused by bacteria; one sip for less serious conditions, one bottle for full blown diseases.
Ingredients rarity: common
Ingredients: made from glowing magical algae that grows near the sea; the algae must be harvested, sun dried, and then powdered before it is mixed with common herb extracts and boiled.
All potions need moon water as a final ingredient, in order to awaken the magical properties of the mixtures. Moon water is water fetched from a source with strong magical energy that must be bathed in the moonlight for at least two hours with no interruption (especially clouds or rain) and no contamination inside any kind of pure silver container. While exposing the water to the moonlight, Cyril must stay with it and perform a chant so the moonlight's properties are absorbed. The chanting cannot be interrupted as well. If the exposure or the chanting is interrupted, he has to reset the time and do it again for another two hours.
Once the process is successfully done, moon water can be stored in any container for up to 1 month. If unused even after that, it begins to lose its magical properties and becomes normal water.
Biography:
Cyril was raised in England by his human father during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Where he grew up, his existence and the act of his parents that caused it was taboo, so they lived in isolation and hardship, and remained in the woods away from the normal humans who treated them like aberrants. His mother had died after giving birth to him, so it was only his father who he's ever known, and therefore grew up more human-like than elven.
Fortunately, nature was kind to them. Cyril was very innocent and kind as a child, and he loved the woods just as it loved him and his father. His father was once a soldier to the kingdom and knew a thing or two not only about human skills but also about magic, after he's encountered the elves and faeries in expeditions before. He could never use it himself since he was not born with the ability to do so, but Cyril was a different case, and he learned well. While his body matured the same pace human bodies did, his mind was quick to mature, and at a young age Cyril knew how to dull emotions when needed, and had the wisdom of a grown man. It was not long after that their home was discovered by ill willed people. His father was murdered. Having only learned magic and still unable to call to spirits that well, Cyril wasn't able to do anything to stop his father's death, and he was even chased down by these people for hours afterwards. He was 14 human years of age then.
He was able to cross to France somehow, stowing away on carts and ships. The culture was different, but even though he wasn't treated like a monster he still ended up living in the streets, having been quite young and helpless. He started selling his body for food and shelter almost soon after, a time when he had almost been mistaken as a girl if his chest weren't flat as a board.
He traveled everywhere, never settling in one place for too long. It was something necessary so he can satisfy his contracted spirits' wishes. Eventually he ended up in Italia. One day, he witnessed a group of men holding a young man, though one older than he, a captive. Feeling sympathetic, he decided to help, only to receive a blow on the face while doing so. It was only afterwards that he came to know that the young man he saved was of noble blood, when he was taken in by them, fed, cleaned, clothed, and educated. He became their servant—a personal guard for the young master and an escort whenever needed. He served the house for years, until he's served them enough for their kindness, and he had to explain that he had to keep moving around in order to keep his contracts.
Though heartbroken, Cyril didn't let it show. He moved on and continued to travel everywhere, surviving in human societies by selling his effective "medicine". One day, his journal suddenly vanished, leaving a very short trail of pages that didn't take him anywhere far. From that point on, Cyril traveled to find his journal and at the same time to broaden his knowledge and wisdom about the world, in case his lost knowledge were never to come back to him.
When he was in America, he eventually felt strong magical energy from Manta Carlos, which instantly convinced him to check out the island. The place was his only hope of retrieving old knowledge of magic in this modern world where humans no longer believed in magic and spirits and instead trusted "science" and their senses. He applied as a staff to the academy to gain access to the library. He usually spends a lot of his free time there, just reading, though the memory of losing his journal still stuck in his mind always.
Additional Information:
- His complex is actually a bipolar disorder. Aside from his episodes of depression and aggression, he also has manic episodes. He usually craves for skinship during such times, but tries to hide this putridity as much as he can.
- His magic has influence on his bipolar disorder, but the 'how' is never consistent.
