It was set to be a fun outing.

Basil had wanted to hang out with Chloe for a while, but it took some time for Chloe to overcome his... aura, for lack of a better word. That supernatural nasty feeling that surrounded him.

She was able to tolerate it now. And he wasn't so bad, once you got to know him well enough. His creepiness was even endearing in a way.

Chloe stepped out of the car. Once Basil joined her on the sidewalk, it would drive off. They were in the city, in front of a store with what looked like a slightly shoddy forgery of a "Half Price Books" sign. It looked a little dilapidated for a building owned by a book-selling giant.

"You know what, Basil? I take back what I said. This place could totally have some sketchy-ass cursed books."

Basil was, perhaps, just a bit overexcited. He'd considered Chloe to be a friend of his for a while now, but upon closer inspection, he wasn't sure the feeling had been too mutual. It didn't deter him in the slightest, but made one on one time all the more something to look forward to. He was going to be Chloe's friend! It was happening! No giving up allowed.

What they were getting up to was perfect bonding material, too. Basil enjoyed any day spent in the city- but when it involved shady things, especially shady things with magical artifact leanings, oh, it was the best.

Well. He liked finding random shiny stickers on the ground, too, but hey. Having varied tastes was healthy, apparently. So was enthusiasm! (Fake it till you make it.)

The sleek eldritch boy followed Chloe out of the car to stand in front of the bookstore. He grinned ear to ear. Haha, this looked terrible, which promised great things.

"I have a good eye for this stuff," he said with a nod, delighted. "That is, I quite literally have abilities around finding interesting things, so something good is bound to be in there! If not some lovely cursed books, good times with good company." He looked at the demon girl fondly.

"Or, y'know, a book that'll try to bite us. That'd be fun. Onwards we go!"

He pushed through the door and peered into the shop. It was a bit dimly lit, and he couldn't currently see any employees. This was such a perfect setting for shenanigans.

Some of the walls had obvious water damage. A few patches of the wood floor looked warped. There was a mildew smell, mixed with a vague scent of burnt paper, and a hint of... what was that smell? Chloe wasn't sure she even wanted to know.

"What would you write in a book that bites people?" Chloe asked.

"Funny you should ask that." The voice came from behind them. It was much squeakier than Basil's. Chloe turned around to find a short, hooded rat-man in a raggedy cloak. Part of his ear was missing, and there was a patch of skin on his snout which must have had some kind of condition. Mange, maybe?

He must have been standing next to the doorway the whole time.

"I got one of those a while back. Almost lost a finger." He raised a dirty, clawed hand made a wheezing noise which, coupled with the way his lips stretched as he did it, might have been a chuckle. "How can I help you two?"

Chloe wished he would stop doing that thing with his lips. Was that supposed to be a smile? She really wanted him to stop smiling.
