"Oh...? Who's this~?" The gossipy tones were palpable.

Shellie cleared her throat. "This is Captain Grant Mackenzie... he's my boyfri--"

Before she could finish her statement the house erupted again, her aunts and female cousins clustering around with questions of anniversaries, while the men gave Grant a good long once over.

Grant gave another grin, his confidence slowly returning. This wasn't so bad, they were just people after all. He gave a small wave to the gentlemen, Rose flapping her wings and squawking at all the chattering.

"Skrawk! Captain on deck! Skraawk!"

The men seemed to be pleased with Grant, all except for one, sitting in the corner giving Grant a stern look.

Everything seemed to be going okay, until a question rippled through the assored Powells.

"What kind of mage is he?"

Shellie seemed to be a bit more prepared for this than Grant, and quickly said, "He's a Weather Mage..."

They all seemed to look at each other before nodding and taking an interest in Rose. "That must be his familiar, what a cute bird."

The Sweets Witch let out a long sigh.

a few pleased giggles rolled through the crowd. "Well, then can you make it snow on Christmas Day? Its been so long since I've seen a white Christmas--"

Shellie waved her spoon and sent their bags to the room they would be staying in. She took Grant's hand and lead him to the man sitting in the armchair.

"Grant, this is my Dad, Lewis Powell..."

Lewis Powell was about fifty years old, but he looked like he could've been forty. The man had a beer in one hand, and another beer in his other hand. He looked perfectly sober though, as if neither beers were doing anything for him.

"Grant is--"

"Not a mage?" the man said. Shellie stopped in her tracks.

"Tell me--Grant--" He seemed to chew up Grant's name and spit it out. "You're not a mage, are you?"
