Euphemia knew that she was still ignorant of many facets of life on the island, but this was perhaps one of the harder things to shake. She’d spent her whole life aware of the dangers of demons and monsters. While she had managed to coexist with a few so far, incidents like today only seemed to reinforce why she needed to stay on guard.

“Why would that be the case, Mr Nash?” She asked, with genuine curiosity. “Why would beings who’s very existence opposes the Lord deserve any of His consideration?”

"Because they are the ones who need it the most. Consider, our Lord can do anything. Why then can he not allow a demon to feel remorse for wrongdoings they commit? To desire closeness with him again? Why, in all the world, does no believer pray for Lucifer, he who most needs the prayer?"

Bertrand's stance widened a bit. He knew this was a contentious point among the faithful. But he didn't just believe it on faith alone. "In fact, I have seen demons rise the same way angels can fall. At the academy, the chaplain is a risen demon."

"And besides," he said, tensing up a bit further as he knew this next point was a more controversial one. Especially on the demons on the island. "how can you be certain the creatures you condemn are true demons and not merely something else labeled as such? I do not believe God would allow true, irredeemable evil to walk the Earth."

It's not that Euphemia thought Bertrand was lying to her, the way he had stepped in earlier made her think he was honest with his intentions. She was just yet to see anything that supported his words.

But, that wasn't quite true. She had come to know a demonic being who could feel guilt, feel remorse for her actions. However, that one had also been half angelic, half something divine.

After a moment of internal conflict, she rationalised that away as an outlier.

"There is a great deal of evil in this world, Mr Nash." She closed her eyes as she spoke. "Many creatures that cause harm simply to cause harm. I do not believe God abides such evil as well. However, it is the duty of His faithful to remove it.”

She stopped herself short of saying it was her duty. Her time as a holy warrior had passed, there was no longer any evil she was meant to destroy.

“I have witnessed many demons such as this, creatures born of sin, driven by their very nature to commit even more sin, to kill, to devour, to destroy. Such beings are beyond salvation.“

She stopped for a moment, however, opening her eyes, tilting her head to the side curiously.

“Who is this chaplain?” She asked. Demons being part of society was something she’d learned to expect on the island, but a demonic chaplain was something different entirely.
