The night was glimmering as always. It was New Year's Eve, so while the cold could Pierce through and numb one's face like hundreds of needles, people actually crowded the streets and filled the shops, those opened for the holidays at least. The one Deith stood in front of was, strangely, not one of those.

A puff of breath wafted through the air. He stood in front Of Angels and Demons, which was not an overly, but a constantly, busy bar. But unlike the dim lights it usually emitted, nothing but darkness came out of the ground floor. Surely, though, the upper floor was not as empty. Deith stared at the building from outside, his breath continuously blurring the sight but did nothing about it. He pulled his right hand out from the pocket of his coat, already holding his phone.

"I hope you're free tonight because I'm right outside your place right now," he typed in, and sent it to Samael a few seconds later. And then he shoved both hands into his pockets once more, and buried his lower face into the knitted black scarf around his neck.

He would've waited in his car, but he had parked it a couple of blocks away from here, not wanting to announce his arrival noisily with the low roar of its engine. And so he stood there, waiting for a redhead to come out of the door directly leading upstairs.

''Samael, your phone is ringing'', his brother said, waking him up from his I-am-slowly-falling-asleep-even-though-it-is-still-very-early haze.

''It's midnight already?'', he asked, a bit confused. He could have sworn he had a few more hours to go before his birthday just a moment before.

''Not even close'', the younger shifter laughed as he disappeared into the hallway. ''Honestly, I cannot even begin to understand how you can fall asleep so easily. It's New Year's Eve! And your birthday!'', the younger man added, from the hall, his voice echoing through the whole apartment.

''We're not all party animals like you, Michael'', Samael said, as he stood up from the couch, heading for the bathroom to wake himself up properly, almost completely forgetting about his phone ringing, despite it being the reason his brother woke him up.

''So keep your voice down as you exit, will you?'', he added, yelling a bit himself if he were to be honest, and thus not surprised as his mother reprimanded them both. ''Yeah, yeah'', his brother scoffed as he escaped through the door. A few moments later, as silence fell upon the apartment again, Samael returned to the room, only remembering his phone ringing when he saw a little blue light blinking on it, informing him that he had in fact received a message.

Or two, the first one being from his brother.

''That guy you keep talking about is standing like right in front of the door. Almost bumped into him. Seems you will still be going out, brother! Have fun!'' the said message read, and in truth, when he opened the second one he had received, or in fact, the first, Samael saw an invitation from Deith.

''Coming right down'', he texted back as he headed for his room. ''Sorry about my brother''

''Going out after all?'', his mother asked as she saw him in changed clothes, looking for his jacket. ''Yeah'', he answered simply, heading for the door.

''Be safe'', was all she said as she watched him too run down the stairs and through the door.

''Hey'', he greeted Deith once he was there. The cold outside made him shiver and pull his jacket tighter to his body, his scarf already covering his mouth as much as it could, without making his words sound as gibberish.

''What's up?'', he asked, wondering what Deith was doing out here, this late, on New Year's Eve, and without his car at that.

The door opened, and Deith took a step back, thinking it was already Samael only to get disappointed that it was someone else who almost bumped into him. Surprised, he didn't even manage to offer a greeting before the young man disappeared into the streets. Deith followed his form as it became smaller and smaller in the distance, eventually snapping out of that as the door opened once more.

"'What's up?' Really?" he grinned at Samael's direction, an eyebrow raised. "It's New Year's Eve, that's enough reason for me to be here, right?" And there's Samael's birthday, too, which was technically a few more hours ahead of them. "Seeing your brother made me feel less guilty for wanting to drag you away from here. Means I wasn't disrupting... too much."

The idea still caused an ache in his chest, however, which lasted only for a moment. Even without him, Samael wasn't going to be alone. And that was good. He had his whole family with him, and they were such a beautiful family too, and Deith have already grown fond of all of them. He had half-expected that Samael couldn't spend time with him tonight, especially since he didn't say anything in advance. And knowing this time that it wasn't the case, Deith was light with relief. He was beginning to wish he wasn't always alone, but he was, in truth, always alone without Samael.

Besides, he had some plans for tonight and all of those would go to waste if they couldn't go out.

"So. Dinner?" he asked, as indifferently as he could make it sound, probably to hide that inner anxiety he felt.

''You didn't really disrupt anything'', Samael said, watching his breath disappear into the air with a smile. ''We don't really celebrate New Year's, not as a family at least. Michael had his own thing to do, usually after we had all eaten a late lunch together'', he explained, thinking about his brother, and the sort of hard partying he had been doing during the last year. He always stayed safe so far, though, and thus Samael hoped he would do so wherever he had gone tonight as well.

''I was actually just about to fall asleep in front of the TV'', he added, giving Deith a small grin and a shrug of his shoulders. ''I haven't really had a reason to stay up until midnight ever since I turned eighteen'', he laughed, looking at Deith and wondering why the man had just showed up without calling beforehand.

''So, yeah, dinner sounds great'', he said in the end, shooting another grin in Deith's direction. ''I was just surprised you were here, without calling. Or your car. You haven't walked here, have you?'', he said, raising an eyebrow. Knowing where Deith lived, he was certain that there was no way that man was here on foot, considering how long of a walk that way.

"My car's... somewhere around here..." Deith chuckled as he absentmindedly placed his hands near his lips, so he could blow some warm air on them. His fingertips were beginning to feel cold. "I really planned to... not let you know I was gonna drop by. In case my timing's bad, I could've just walked away without you even knowing I was here!" he added, returning the man's grin. "But anyways, we should definitely go to the car. It's too cold to walk around for too long."

Deith led the way, and as he began his strides, his restless hands began to clutch and rub his upper arms. The car waited for them a couple of blocks away, camouflaged in the dark, at least until Deith took out the remote key and pressed it, causing two loud beeps to echo in the cold air as the headlights blinked once. He hurried inside and turned the heater on immediately as he waited for Samael to get in as well.

He tilted his head, his eyes searching for the other's. "So, any requests or ideas where we could go, or would you be okay wherever I'm planning to take you?" he smiled.

''You are impossible'', Samael said, sighing as he shook his head softly, following Deith to the car still, for it really was much too cold outside to walk, let alone simply stand around and talk. Some way for the bar, the car waited for them in the darkness, and Samael got into it as quickly as he could. He had not been standing outside long, yet he could still feel the cold clinging to him even one he was on the inside, though, admittedly, the car hadn't been turned on yet.

''You are the one who invited me out'', Samael said once they were inside, raising an eyebrow at the other man's question. ''So you better have some sort of plan ready because I haven't been out for New Year's Eve in years'', he said, laughing, though he really did mean what he had said: the last time he had even properly celebrated New Year's has been his 18th birthday and even then it had been inside.

''Starting with that dinner you have just mentioned would be good, probably'', he added, though he wasn't really that hungry. He simply wanted to be inside somewhere.

@Trahnael: No worries, Nael, mine is probably no better xD

"Hey," Grinning, Deith shrugged, "I just thought I should at least consider if you feel like going anywhere specific." He started the engine and placed his hand back on the wheel and began to drive. "But of course I have a plan. What kind of guy would do... this without anything in mind? Definitely not a charming one like me."

Deith snickered. The heater was helping him relax, since his body didn't have to be so rigid while warm, and even that had an effect to his mental state, somehow.

"Oh, but since you're letting me choose the place... don't complain." The image of a bright European-themed shop entered Deith's head. He loved that place, considering it had lovely main dishes and pastries. He sped up a little, turning for the road that headed to that restaurant-and-café. It took a couple of minutes before he parked the car once more, just in front of the elegant shop that seemed to be sparkling when viewed from outside through the glass walls. As expected, there were lots of people inside at the moment, but Deith had made some prearrangements even though the shop didn't usually make reservations.

They headed inside quickly, where it was once again warm and comfortable. The seats in the middle of the shop were cushioned, but those at the sides were already couches. Their table was in a corner, opposite the glass wall......

...

A few minutes had passed. It wasn't midnight yet, so Deith was sure they haven't been here for more than an hour. It was almost midnight though. And as he took small bites from his cheesecake for desserts, his free hand began to move through his pockets in search for that small item he's been carefully hiding the entire night.

He found it soon enough. The small box was hard, and it was pointed in the edges, but the surface was velvet and quite soft against his fingertips. He was silent as he played with that small box in his pocket. He was silent because he was hesitant, and nervous, because for once, he's actually put a lot of effort into a gift, because it wasn't meant only as a birthday present but also...

Deith put his fork down and pulled his other hand out, and rested it on the table where Samael can't miss it. He was handing him a small green box. "Samael," he smiled, despite the anxiety causing his brows to wrinkle some, "happy birthday."
