Félix looked over her room again. He could imagine why Eric would insist paying. Nerina didn't seem like she made much money at all, or if she did she had little disposable income. Eric was quite the opposite. His 'small' allowance from his father and grandfather was enough to support a privileged lifestyle.

At first, Nerina's talk of seafood seemed normal if she was a seafood enthusiast. But she eventually talked about looking for Ahi tuna, a school of them. Live tuna. And in the midst of her hunting, was attacked by a small shark. Félix now realized she wasn't talking about going to any market. She was hunting live seafood, and not just along the shore.

“Wait... Ahi tuna? Aren't they pretty deep underwater? How do you hunt them?”

Félix knew Nerina frequented the ocean, and at rather dangerous times. But he didn't realize she resided in the waters far more frequently than he imagined.

Nerina realized that she said too much. Félix made her feel too comfortable. She forgot that humans couldn't breathe underwater.

"Uhm, I swim," Nerina began feebly. "My family's been diving for seafood for generations, you know. It's totally normal. The Ondos were really great pearl divers back on Albany Island. So um, I have a reputation to live up to." She added a little laugh that sounded like a small babbling brook.

It still didn't exactly explain why she would be swimming with sharks in the darkest and deepest of waters. Even if the Ondos were pearl divers, which they still were, they would search in the daytime, with specialized wetsuits and boats awaiting them.

She sighed.

"I'm not human." She didn't want to tell him in what aspects she wasn't human, but by now it would be easy to guess, judging by how close she lived by the sea and how long her hair was. "But it's not really a power. It's more like a curse. It's... Complicated."

He wasn't convinced by her explanation. Félix didn't speak, but the look on his face described enough doubt for Nerina to recognize. While she may come from a family of divers, it did not explain a wide array of things he knew about Nerina. For one, he highly doubted she had all the equipment to properly go out and search for gold nuggets and pearls. She could hardly afford furniture.

Not to mention pearl divers don't just go out in the water in the middle of the night. Not with sharks lurking, either. Félix didn't need to say anything before Nerina broke into admission. She wasn't human, she said. She also insisted it wasn't like a power, but a curse. Funny she'd say that to him.

“I think of my powers as a curse too,” Félix admitted. He didn't explain them, but perhaps he would if Nerina confessed her own, “Many people do, but there's always someone who thinks the opposite. I'd like to be that person for you.”

Félix blushed a little, “I'm guessing you can breathe underwater, at the very least. Tell me more?” He asked.

"No," She protested faintly. "I can't speak about it." She didn't want to say anything about being the result of some horrible abomination with a human woman and someone that dwelled in the sea. Her own mother didn't want her, regardless of conjoined legs or not. She felt much shame in that and she never wanted to put it into words. It was something unspeakable to her.

"I'll..." Her coloration darkened. It even looked like her hair was a tinge darker. "I'll show you my curse, and you show me yours."

In the daytime she could still transform at will. She took Félix's hand and directed him outside to the beach again. They didn't go to the sandy shoreline where the red and yellow flags pointed out where it was safe to swim.

Instead, they went a little further to the cliff face, where the rock pools where. The waves crashed relentlessly, like a creature possessed by both worship and fury, coming back to the land for more. Beyond them, there were sure to be powerful rips that would pull people out towards the ocean, never to be seen again.

Nerina took off her dress. She advised Félix to take his clothes off too if he didn't have spare ones. The energy of the waves were incredibly strong, and she took him by the hand still, walking towards the deep ocean calmly. Scales started to appear on her legs.

She leapt in, dragging Félix with her. There was no shallow water, no pool bottom. At first there was darkness, as water would fill his nostrils and ears. Nerina had let go of him. The saltiness of the sea made it difficult to open his eyes.

It was very easy to panic, and then drown.

He agreed to show her his curse. Nerina brought him outside and to the ocean. Félix expected her to descend into the beach, but instead she walked up to the cliff. The ocean was just below them, smashing against the rocks and recoiling into the deep. Félix felt nervous standing so close to the edge, but not as nervous as when he was asked to strip.

“O-Okay.” Félix didn't have a change of clothes. He removed everything save for his underwear, a point he debated on. It'd get wet, but he supposed he could just go commando later. He was probably going straight back to his dorm after this...

Nerina had stripped as well, and Félix tried not to let his eyes linger on her. Once scales appeared on her legs, he had something to focus on. It looked like they were fusing together...

The next thing he remembered was the water smashing against him like a large brick. The air was smashed right out of his lungs, and Félix's body was stunned for a brief moment. Nerina had let go of him, and he could feel the water pull him out into the deep.

He panicked. Félix could swim, but he was not as strong of a swimmer as he realized. He desperately needed air as well, but the tide pulled him further underwater and away from the surface. He stretched out his arms in a desperate attempt to break the surface, his legs kicking behind him frantically.

He fought as hard as he could not to gasp for breath, not to take in any more water.

Since his eyes would come in contact with salt water if he opened them, the only sign that there was something else out there in the water was when something long and slippery passed his legs. Then hands took him up to the surface, helping him stay afloat in the strong sea current.

With their heads above the water, the waves would pass over their heads and cause Félix to experience the unpleasant sensation of a very salty and unsteady bath.

"Sorry. Do you even swim? I should have asked you before–" Nerina commented before a wave rushed over them again, cutting their conversation short. It was a little embarrassing for her to ask that of him. She still held onto Félix. "Scull your legs. Like you're riding a bicycle."

Unlike Nerina, Félix still had legs to scull if he wanted to keep his head above the water. It would feel silly and somewhat tiring, but it would work.

"Do you want to see more?"

Feeling those hands pull him from the water was one of the greatest experiences of his life. All of a sudden, the fear of death vanished as he grabbed one breath of eair before a wave descended against his face. In Nerina's arms, he was floating. Despite the miserable saltiness, Félix was simply happy to be on the surface.

“I've never swam in the ocean,” Félix explained between bobs and waves. He knew how to stay afloat, thanks to swimming lessons, but he never thought the ocean tide was so strong. At least in holding on to Nerina, he could go against the current and stay up on the surface. He sculled his legs, a practised routine, but it was never any less ridiculous.

“What else?” Félix asked, “So long as it's not how far down you can dive, I should be okay.” His voice couldn't carry a proper tone when his whole body focused on just staying afloat.

"Oh," When Félix mentioned demonstrating how far down she could dive was out of the question for him, Nerina felt somewhat embarrassed. She was glad that Félix told her. "I'll think of something else, then."

Nerina observed her surroundings carefully. She had swam parallel to the tides, but she observed the flow of the surf. She then decided it was probably best to show him now than later. People would start to come in to catch some early waves. "We're going to go into a rip to get to an ocean cove. Keep calm and hold onto me if you're scared."

As expected, even if Félix was holding onto her back, Nerina was an incredibly strong swimmer, and once they were caught in the rip, the current became incredibly fast. It felt almost like how some girls would dream about riding on a dolphin, but Nerina didn't make any squeaks, clicks or fantastic leaps. She then swam away from it, parallel again to the formation of the white crest on the waves.

"Since you have powers, I trust you. Please don't tell anyone. Eric knows, but I'd um. I don't want you guys talking about it."

There were pieces of the cliff that jutted out like a ledge for them, made by the crashing of waves against rock over millions of years. She let Félix get off first, and then she hoisted herself onto the rock. Nerina's scales started out like a shimmery champagne, and then as one got closer to the fin, it was a lovely gold-shifting copper, and the tips of her fins were tinged red. Her tail was longer than traditional depictions of mermaids. It looked incredibly powerful compared to her weak human legs.

She gave a light shrug, flipping her tail playfully.

"This is me."

Félix held onto her back, for sure. He tried to find a grip that would both allow him to stay on and avoid touching Nerina somewhere where he shouldn't be touching her. Which was, to be honest, a little difficult.

He held his breath and kept his head low and against Nerina as she charged through the water. Every time he was briefly underwater the ocean would force his head up a little, the salt catching against his lips. It was a bit of a rough ride, but he did trust Nerina.

Once he was on a more stable surface, Félix relaxed a little more. His legs were tired, and his body was exhausted from struggling in the sea. He leaned back against the rock and stretched while Nerina hoisted herself up beside him.

It was his first opportunity to see her over the surface. Her tail especially, which was long and every inch of it gorgeous. She was gorgeous. Félix smiled, though still a bit embarrassed in seeing her without any clothes and himself in nothing but very wet underpants.

“You look beautiful,” Félix said. He couldn't see how she thought it a curse. “I suppose it's my turn to show,” Félix closed his eyes for a moment and sucked in a quick breath. From his sides, long and black tendrils emerged and dangled over the rock. One of them coiled around Nerina's tail, letting her feel the raw strength hiding in those shadowy arms. Each one was essentially pure muscle, its grip as tight as any anaconda. He did not squeeze hard enough to hurt Nerina, just enough to show her his own strength.

“This is me.”

"I'm nothing special," Nerina said. "I'm just an ordinary girl that's half-mermaid." To be honest, most of the attention she got was unwanted when she was on land. She only owned a small hand mirror that she took with her when she went away into the ocean. She never saw herself as how others saw her. She sighed. "But I will never have a normal future with somebody else, in a pretty house with lots of neighbours, a pet cat and a child." She wanted to have that kind of life.

Félix's powers however, was much more different than her own 'curse'. There were many things in the sea that looked like that. She knew; she never went down too far to be caught in the snares of one of those creatures. She froze in fear, and shivered when he curled his tentacle around her tail. She could feel the pressure of his grip. Only a whimper escaped from her mouth, not even a scream. He could have hoisted her upside down and tear her apart.

"Félix stop, please," she begged.

She cowered under him, shielding her eyes from Félix. Whether she liked it or not, this was him. She never wanted to say what he was. Félix gave her awe when he saw her in her entirety, but she was repulsed by his touch and became withdrawn.

"I'm sorry... I was scared."
