Freezing. Summer had treated Leonardo kindly, the waters had been warm and the sun had warmed his skin every time he'd bobbed up above the surface for a look around at his surroundings. But now the sky was grey, and the waters mirrored it, the sun was no where to be seen and instead had been blanketed over by a large, grey cloud that looked like a storm was drawing close. A soft splash sounded as the creature vanished beneath the surface of the water once more, and re-surfacing about fifteen meters off, huddled underneath a wooden jetty with barnacles stuck up the legs, little dark clusters of them that glistened softly in the dull light of the morning. A seagull screeched overhead, bombarding the fishing boats drawing in their catch from the wee hours.

Leo shivered visibly, craning his neck back to look up at the wooden surface of the jetty above him, an arm snaking it's self around one of the thick, water-soaked legs. His ears pricked as he heard movement above his head, and large, blue eyes settled on the section of wood it was coming from. Frowning softly, and sinking down below the water again, a stream of bubbles left the boy's mouth, popping at the surface and causing a small ripple to branch out across the water. The docks were busy this time of the morning, still clinging to the heavy set leg of the jetty, Leo wondered if now was a good time to clear off, humans weren't generally accustomed to seeing a creature such as himself, even in a place like this, Leo had not met even one of his own kind.

The boy had spent the night curled up in a sea cave he'd found just off the coast of the island, though it wasn't much warmer in there and his night had been disturbed by a curious Harbour Seal that had swam in looking for fish, scowling at the thought, Leo supposed the creature had found one, hadn't it? Though perhaps not the right kind it had been hoping for. Ducking his head down and pushing himself out to hide underneath a small fishing boat docked close by, the fish boy could get an eye of whoever had been making all that noise above his head.

RE: behind the sea (open)

Emiliano had just gotten off his boat, finally home after such a long journey at sea. He had only been on the island for a few short months, and had already established something of a small shipping company. Early on he had figured out that the residents here would probably not be able to order and buy things online like regular participants of the non-magical world. By setting up physical addresses in different continents, Emiliano could deliver goods and things to the residents of the island. The legitimate business also gave him an exceptional front for his massive side business — Smuggling. Smugging contraband on and off the island was no sweat to him. Emilio was experienced enough by now that he knew where to hide it and how. Currently, he was smuggling in a shipment of assorted weapons for a rich man who wished to remain anonymous. He would be appearing the next day to pick up his belongings and pay the extravagent fees, and Emilio decided then that he would spend the night on his boat with the precious cargo.

Carting the goods to the shore through many small fishing boats, Emilio supervised from the jetty. His employees had come already, picking up the legal cargo and carting it off to his little shop down in the underground. As he wandered back and forth between the men, Emilio heard a splashing sound, and wondered if fish often hung around this dock. It wasn't long before all the commotion died down, and Emilio was left alone with a single small dinghy. He could see his big pirate ship still anchored far out to sea, and he wondered if he should get back already. Deciding that yes, he should probably get back to his home before someone else raided it, he hopped down roughly into the small boat, grunting as he heard a soft thump from underneath. It had sounded like he hit something, but there should have been nothing underneath but water. Peering over one edge, Emilio tried to focus, squinting at the murky water underneath to see what he could have possibly bumped against.

RE: behind the sea (open)

All in a moment something landed on Leonardo's head and he barely had time to duck beneath the water before he was more or less crushed. Letting out a loud squeak that ended up only being a stream of bubbles that burst at the surface, a loud splash sounded as his tail flicked up from the water trying to get away, and he ended up about a meter or two from the boat, head popping above the surface to glare at whoever had just squashed him. The boy hissed at him softly, a tall man, fair of form and even fairer of face. Leo knew his kind well, pirates, savage men who'd do anything for money and even more for women. Perhaps it was best he clear off.

But oh he was so pretty, staring for a moment later, Leo could feel his skin prickling from where the cold was biting at him, he was so used to the balmy waters of a tropical sea by now that this was a shock to him. Perhaps he could find one of those things humans used that spat out hot water all of the time. There was something unsettling about that blue-eyed gaze, though it was probably safe for the stranger to assume that Leonardo was more or less completely harmless, the worst he could do was tip him out of his boat, but what was a pirate if they couldn't even swim? Another soft little hiss sounded from somewhere in Leo's throat, and a growl emanated from him shortly after, before he disappeared beneath the surface with a soft plop, only to reappear about three meters to the left.

RE: behind the sea (open)

A tail had lashed up towards the surface, making the man jerk back for a moment. His curiosity had been ignited now, and he leaned even further out to see what was underneath him. However, his efforts were needless, and a head popped up out of the water to hiss at him. This confused Emiliano endlessly, and the pair were locked for a moment just staring at each other. Why was a boy hiding under his boat? Immediately suspicious and angry, Emilio returned the hiss, taking up his oars to try to get himself closer to the person.

Something didn't add up about him, though. He kept darting under the water like a seal, instead of treading the water like a normal human. The memory of a tail flipping over burned in his mind. All in a moment, Emilio realised that this was probably no ordinary boy. Forgetting his English in his shock, his native Portuguese slipped out. "... Sereia ??" The implications of this also meant money to Emiliano, and his eyes lit up. He would need to take the thing alive, though, and all he had in his boat was a ruddy little fishing net. "Ayeee, venha aqui." Patting the water gently with a hand, Emilio opened both hands over the water to show he meant no harm. Or at least, until the creature made it's way over here.

Leo started as the man yelled, twitching and flicking his tail to push himself just that little further away. That was a word he recognized, however. Leo had awful trouble with the English language, he'd been around few who could speak it, and so had only really picked up the odd word or two. He could speak in single word sentences, and that was about it. The word that meant mermaid was spewed, and Leonardo scowled. He was not a maid. Shaking his head vigerously at the man, he sucked a mouthful of salty water into his mouth a spat a jet in his direction. "Eu sou um menino!" He snapped. I'm a boy.

He shrunk away again as a hand went into the water, gazing warily at it and debating whether to approach or not. Humans were bad. He'd learned that from square one, though so far, this one hadn't brandished a harpoon at him, or any weapon, come to think of it. Eyes narrowing ever so slightly, the merboy's brow furrowed. "Por quê?" Why should he go over there? What was going to happen if he did? This was a strange situation to him. Letting out another soft growl, Leo opted to keep his distance.

Emiliano's mouth twitched to the side at the creature's reaction. Cute cute cute. A stream of salt water came chasing towards him, falling in front of the boat. Emilio got the message, anyway, and held up his hands in mock surrender, nodding his head casually. He didn't know that merboys existed before now, and had only heard of the beautiful mermaids that lured men to their death. The merboy was staring at him from afar, and it was painfully obvious that he didn't trust him. Obviously, it was time to woo this funny little creature.

Repeating himself, Emilio lowered his voice into a gentle purr. "Venha aqui, menino." Gently, Emilio paddled himself a bit closer, reaching his hands back out over the water to show no harm. "Porque você é bonitinho. " And the merboy was awfully cute from what he could see. Swishing his hands around the surface of the water, he watched it slide over the tops of his hands, making tiny waves with each movement. Shivering at the cold bite of the water, Emilio clasped his hands together. "Ayee menino, você não está frio?" He only just realised now that they had been speaking his native language at one another, and sat back a bit in his boat. He hadn't met a single person here that could speak Portuguese yet, and the fact that a slimy little merboy could made him a bit irritated.

RE: behind the sea (open)

Staring for a moment longer, Leo was beginning to let his guard down just a little. Perhaps this human was just curious, some humans were merely curious, and others wanted to kill him. The next sentence that dropped from the pirate's lips made the merboy blush visibly, and duck his head mostly underwater again. He wasn't used to recieving compliments, letalone being interacted with. Most just gawked, or hurled their harpoons at him. A hand lifted it's self, and came hard into contact with the surface with a loud slap, spraying water all over Emilio as best as Leo could get him. He couldn't help but nod at the next question he was asked, of course he was cold, he was freezing. "Sim."

Pausing for a moment, Leo's tail flicked and pushed himself just a little closer to the boat, within touching distance. He was a little confused to meet someone that spoke his tongue, as well, and frankly he was glad of it. English was an awfully confusing language to learn, especially when you were already sixteen years old and well past the point of finding it easy to learn languages. "No English?" He asked, tilting his head to one side.

RE: behind the sea (open)

Emilio's grin grew considerably, and he fought to keep it an innocent smile as opposed to the nasty shark's grin he had when he was winning. A sudden spray of cold water washed over him, and he shivered violently and squeaked. He closed his eyes for a moment, wiping the salt off his face with one hand. However, the merboy had begun to move himself closer to his boat, and Emilio held back any feelings of agitation. It wouldn't do for him to have gotten so close and lose it all from his temper. "Yes English. My English is ... No so bad." He still had a thick Portuguese accent, but his English was more or less understandable.

"Come closer, if you cold, cute boy." A cheeky grin took hold of his features, and Emilio wriggled himself in his boat, pushing the vessel a little closer to the merboy, close enough to touch. He didn't want to scare him off just yet, and held out his hand for the boy to take. Stretching his other hand out casually, Emilio wondered why the boy had come to these waters of all places, especially if he was cold. He should be in tropical water, not these ones. The fishing net was underneath his boot, and he didn't think he'd be able to grab it quick enough before the boy ducked back underneath. Maybe if he could just ... Coax the thing into his boat, he could sit on him until he was wrapped up. "Come into boat, it's warmer. My ship is over there, it's very warm. Will feed you, too."

RE: behind the sea (open)

A soft giggle sounded from the boy as Emilio squeaked, and a timid little smile crossed his features. This was funny, humans were awfully strange, and Leo was far too easily lead on. "No.. Bad.." He echoed softly, still staring wide eyed at Emilio. He had absolutely no clue of the man's intentions, of course he didn't, the front the pirate was putting on was awfully convincing for someone as clueless as poor little Leonardo. Cute boy. He scowled softly at that word, cute. Why was he being called cute? He had a rough idea of what that meant, but... He edged just that little bit closer, still a tad wary.

He was cold, and the promise of warmth... That was awfully tempting to someone that had spent the last three weeks in this freezing little harbour, ducking in and out of boats trying to hide from humans. Sure, he could take on their form, but he was still very much a merboy, with his gills and little fins, and that pretty white-blue shade of his skin. "Warm...?" He asked, "you... Make me warm?" The dark skinned man had extended a hand to him, and tentatively, Leonardo took it.

RE: behind the sea (open)

Emilio lit up as the merboy edged even closer, his foot twitching as he felt the netting beneath it. His catch was so close, he could practically taste the riches in his mouth. Then again, that could just be the foul brine of the ocean. His fingers were wet and cold, and they felt frozen already. Hopefully this year's winter wasn't going to be too bad. "Ye, warm." Obviously, that seemed to be the way to get through to him. His patience was rewarded, and a smaller hand clasped his.

All at once, Emilio squashed the hand between his larger one, cutting off any chance of escape. Gently, he brought the hand to his mouth, kissing it gently. If he could, he would rather take the boy willingly than by force. After all, why would he bother exerting energy when the creature was already putty in his hands. His other hand came out, slowly to not startle the merman. His fingers gently brushed against the blue fins, captivated by his strange form. He would definitely bring quite a lot of money, if only from that rich colour scheme. "Can you come in or will you swim there?" Reluctantly, Emiliano released his catch, thinking of how he would keep his new prize until he could find the right buyer. A fishtank large enough to contain him would have to be either found or built, and what did merpeople even eat?
