One of the least surprising things about being an exile from one's home was the sudden lack of familiar comforts, yet it still never ceased to cause nostalgia in Lelei. At that point in his life on the land, Lelei should have been reasonably adjusted to his new life without most of the things he had grown accustomed to beneath the waves. He had been on land long enough to get used to land foods or find replacements for his usual food, and he had made quite a few friends and acquaintances in local law enforcement. But more often than he would care to admit, he would find a craving for the distinctly ocean foods and snacks that always settled his nerves before the exile.

Land dwellers had varied tastes and ate plenty of different things, and Lelei learned that they consumed even MORE things in other parts of the world. Yet there were still a handful of things they dared not eat that he craved and could never find. On the rare occasion that he could find it, it was never prepared in the same way. He missed the spiced anemone jellies and the sour mixes of stuffed sea slugs.

In an effort to seek out any place that could conceivably carry these seeming ocean-only treats and delicacies, Lelei relented and traveled to the Underground borough of the city. He surmised that any place that featured a high density of magical and arcane shops could possibly have an establishment that carried exotic foods like the ones he craved, or could make them with a good enough recipe.

One of the nice things about walking about the magical marketplaces was that, unlike most of Manta Carlos, he received significantly less strange looks. Well, he still got a glance or two, but less people gawked and no one screamed MONSTER. Hell, when he approached a possible vendor at an outdoor farmers-esque market that showcased numerable odd and weird "foods", Lelei did not even have to get them to calm down or stop screaming.

"Excuse me, sir, but you would not happen to carry anemone jellies would you? I have such a craving..."

Hermes was still adjusting to this strange school he had been forced into. In fact, he still sort of viewed this place as a joke. He was making the rounds, not in class currently, deciding to try to map this place out. He wanted to know the locks and bolts, how the security cameras worked here, and how fast he could undo them.

The pale boy slipped out the doors of the school building and into the humid air. The sunlight wasn't great for him, he was white, he burned. His hair was black, slicked, and with green spikes running through it. He wore a plain white shirt, with tan pants- nothing special. His eyes were starling however, but around here, there really wasn't any weird. He had snake eyes, round with slits for the pupil. Instead of a normal tongue he had a slit, thin one, and he had two thin top fangs. His nails were creepily long. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a ciggy, holding it to his mouth and clicking on the lighter he held in his other hand. He took a deep breath, inhaling feeling the smoke level down his throat and back up, before puffing out smoke fumes. They were quickly lost in the breeze.

He noticed someone else quite strange leaving the school building. Hermes decided to follow this fellow, for he seemed to know where he was going, and everyone knew the city was dangerous to go in. Hermes was cunning, sneaky, and manipulative. He was designed to be.

Soon, they reached Mantas Carlos, and Hermes knew he hadn't been around here before. He passed oddities and freaks, his stilted eyes jerking around. Hermes took a deep inhale and exhale, his face masked by smoke for a moment, before he kept following his chosen fellow. They soon reached a market, and Hermes mouth drooled, he smiled hissing, his fangs showing behind the cig in his teeth now. His hands itched, the tables and stalls were covered in the strangest objects, and he wanted them all. He was a master theft after all, he could have it all if he wanted.

It wasn't that Siri didn't want to stare. She was distinctly aware of the rap of barefoot fin-claws against the streets of the Underground, and every part of her wanted to clap her hands on either side of her gaping mouth and gawk at the all-consuming glory of a biped SHARK MAN just waltzing down the street. However, a lifetime practicing teenage ennui and aloof New York City disinterest kept her head down and her eyes trained with sudden interest at a parked car. Once he'd moved along, her neck snapped to catch the trailing end of his tail, her own white-blonde curls flurrying around her face with the effort.

"Oh shit,"" She'd seethed, her voice a mere whisper to herself as she'd watched him step over to a vendor and asked with his crazy shark mouth for god knows what. With one hand, she plucked up a fistful of her skirt to wander up with a casualty so feigned, it was obvious - tapping her finger against her chin, eyes downcast to rove over the wares the vendor offered, and act as if she hadn't even noticed him. "Hmmm..." She'd hummed, reaching across the space just before him to grab some weird yellow nugget she knew nothing about - the hell was it, looked like a curry-powdered human toe -, and did it swiftly and crazily enough to bump her arm into his.

"Hey, my bad, dude." She tried cooly, peering up at him with khol-lined eyes and an easy smile, "Say, whatcha looking for, anyways? If he doesn't have it," - quick nod of apology and acknowledgement to the vendor- "I know the area pretty well. I might be able to help ya."

Being exiled to the surface was not all disadvantages and longings for his previous home. As a simple matter of his physiology compared to that of the humans, Lelei possessed a few abilities that put him a notch or two above them in certain aspects. For one, he could easily take back to the water in ways that the humans could only dream. But more pertinent to his career as a police officer, Lelei also possessed a sort of "natural radar" that allowed him to keep tabs on all living things in a fairly large area around him. The scientists would call it "electroreception", and it was a sixth sense he shared with his shark ancestors.

Even if he was not paying attention or giving it his concentration, Lelei still possessed 360 degree awareness of his surroundings in a way that humans just could not. He felt the body following him since he departed the school, but felt no inclination to confront it just yet. It maintained a nice distance the entire way, and he could ignore it until it made a sudden move. And he did not even need his sixth sense to notice the youth sauntering up to his side at the vendor, he could easily just see that with his eyes and pronounced height advantage.

<div align=right>"I know the area pretty well. I might be able to help ya."</div>

"That would be most helpful. As it seems this vendor does not carry jellies unfortunately. I'm sorry to bothered you, sir."

Lelei gave a respectful bow to the shopkeep before turning back to the white-haired young woman. His eyes narrowed slightly and his head turned slightly to throw a glance at the following entity, a young smoking lad. Call it age discrimination or a byproduct of his training, but Lelei was not feeling comfortable with either of them.

"Are you a regular of the area? How could you assist me? Do you know that young man?"

He pointed a flawed finger in the direction of the smoking teen, not even bothering to hide it.

Hermes could not contain himself. His snake eyes held a mischievous, cunning, and manipulative gleam in the low rays of sunlight. There didn't seem to be much caring and kindness to be seen in them, or any slight empathy. He took a huge inhale, and exhale rings around his face as he scanned the tables. He was faster than normal- a simple knock, a trip, and he goodies practically falling into his pockets. No one near him noticed, and none of the vendors. His favorite was the smokers table. Cigars and death sticks were piled up. In a swift motion he had grazed his hand over the table and the cigars and blunt wraps and other plant products fell into his open palm under the table. He slipped them into a side pocket on his tan pants. he grinned a sneaky grin, his fangs that should only belong on a snake grinned too. An unnatural, thin, forked tongue flicked out, and he weaved through the crowds like a snake would coil and uncoil.

Hermes slipped and swerved his way through the crowds until he had reached the treat table. He had hardly noticed all the oddities, his greedy eyes still set on all the prizes. He should have brought baggier pants for this trip if he had known following the strange student. He accidentally brushed up against the shark-man, though his eyes were not on his features. His greasy black hair slicked back blew lightly in the city breeze. "Excussse me" He hissed slightly, his "s" a slur indeed, and a waft of smoke escaped his nostrils. His strange sharpened nails drummed on the table lightly. He didn't even keep track of the female who had joined the scene.

"I mean... true, I'm a regular." She'd admitted, shrinking just a tiny bit as the ginormous shark man turned to speak to her. She didn't have a fear of sharks, but those teeth were going to take a wee bit of getting used to. "I've been on this island for five years, and it ain't that big of an island. I think I have a good idea where you can find these jellies you're talking about. Of course," Her grin widened, and she gave a confessional bow of her head, "I also wanted to help you because you seem pretty cool. I've never met anyone with your..." She stumbled for the words, wincing as she'd hastily settled on, "...qualities? So, I'd love to help ya. My name's Siri."

Now, Siri knew a thing or two about lifting, but the kid that Lelei had referred to was a god damn magician. She wouldn't have even noticed he was robbing practically every table blind as he swept by, except for that he'd been pointed out to her rather specifically. "Shit, yeah." She nodded, teetering over to one side to peer at the lanky young boy from around Lelei, "I've seen that kid on campus where I go to college. He's a student at Starlight." And, now that the boy in question was advancing on them, even touched Lelei as she had to get his attention, she watched them both with wide, dark eyes. "Huh..." She drawled, taking one slow step back to avoid any association with the psuedo-slytherin kid in case... oh, he might trip and scatter a fuck ton of stolen goods in her proximity. But it was as she moved, as the wind gave soft breath to the odd curry-toe in her hand, that the thing practically scalded her hand with the enormous heat it gave off. It was not very unlike holding a burning coal, and the girl shrieked and immediately lobbed it like a hot potato into the kid's direction. "The fuck!" She shrilled, rubbing her palm furiously up and down on her skirt to wipe away the terrible sensation.

The fear and hesitation many people felt around Lelei had only bothered him for a few short moments when he had first arrived on the island. Yes, people panicked and called him a monster and such. But when he showed as much civility as them, if not more, then they quickly learned to calm down around him. He did have to give some credit to the presence of the Academy though, as it probably helped his case in a lot of situations where people did not call him a freak. They probably just thought of him as another student or teacher there, only very strange looking.

So when Siri showed a bit of shirking away from him, he completely ignored it and listened intently to her answers. As a contractor for the police, he was no stranger to the hesitant kind of talk she gave. He sensed no lies in her words and his initial impression of her improved, especially when she alluded to knowing where he could find some jellies.

"I would greatly appreciate your assistance then, Siri. And you may refer to me as a shark. I take no offense."

At least Siri had gotten onto his good side. The other person, however, remained firmly in the suspicious pile. Siri's information helped somewhat, as Lelei could not at least identify him as a student. But it was her reactions that gave him more information. The way she sounded when talking about him, combined with the movements Lelei sensed and the general skeeziness of the kid once he got to his side, confirmed his notions.

Lelei did not move an inch when Hermes got to his side, and instead glared down at the young man quietly, like a hawk watching its prey. Even Siri's outburst could not tear his attention away. The burning curry-toe was caught by Lelei without even looking, then set firmly down on the vendor's table as he leaned closer to Hermes.

"You are excused, young man. May I ask what your business is here? And that you turn out your pockets?"

Hermes was cackling in the inside as he stuffed goodies, they were so blind! Well, except for the giant fish that just happened to stand in front of his way. There was always one person who focused way to much on him in a crowd, and then his trickery could be spotted. His slits in his eyes quickly shrunk and grew as he took in the shark-boy. He was staring at a shark...man....thing. His lip curled up in disgust, his fangs showing. What the hell was he? Hermes took a step back, and took an obnoxious drag and blew a long line of rings in his face. There was something else familiar about this fellow who could easily break Hermes into a thousand shark-bites if he so dared- authority. Hermes hated authority. He recoiled in much a way a snake would recoil its head before snapping at prey. Hermes knew he was about to be busted. His brain started to pulse and click forward, the situation turning into math numbers and problems in his head. He had been all over the world, gathering information for the government. True, the places he had been were full of oppression and poverty, but it counted. He knew stealth, he could blend in some how. Yet another part of him knew he was against freaks this time, not humans. He lowered his cancer-stick from his mouth and moved his hands towards the edges of his pockets.

The man spoke, and he saw rows of glittering teeth. Hermes knew he was dead if he got a bite in the side from one of those. His jaws was still open slightly, and he couldn't help but flick the forked tongue out of his mouth in an old habit. He tried to conceal the snake-ish parts of him, but it proved hard. "Jusst looking around." He said, having to look upwards due to his short size against him. He ignored the request to turn his pockets out obviously.

It was only then he noticed the female standing by. Oh joy, more interactions. He tilted his head at her, observing her movements. She might be a way out- she seemed talkative enough to create a diversion....

Siri was quickly finding herself in a familiar situation - being the most ordinary, biologically human thing in a five mile radius. As such, she had absolutely no desire to get in the middle of an anthropomorphic shark and whatever the hell this other kid was. He could have been some sort of snake-thing, or a dragon for all she knew. She had sensitive skin, ordinary eyes, blunt teeth, and instead of claws, Siri had nails bitten to the quick. No, she didn't have a dog in this fight.

Moreover, as a heavily-dependent drug user, Siri wasn't going to get involved in the least when Lelei started using the commanding kind of tone and line of questioning that a cop might use. This was a self preservation instinct, and it was strong in her. Granted, this was terribly interesting, and it was growing more and more interesting by the second.

So, true to form, the girl only watched on as the innocent bystander she was.

The suspicion that Lelei had held for the young man quickly (d)evolved into contempt and dislike. Hermes was in possession of nearly all the qualities of a snotty troublemaker. Arrogance. Obvious disrespect of authority and seniority. Poor body posture. Plus, there was an instant where he showed teeth and fangs, and any animal, sentient or otherwise, could read that body language as a show of hostile aggression or resistance.

Lelei could do that too, but avoided it for the most part. Firstly, it was far from welcome in civil society to regress to bestial language cues, though he very frequently saw the contrary when handling unruly suspects. Secondly, Lelei's... head structure did not afford him quite the same minute range of control that so many others possessed. He could not simply curl his lips and show a fang or two. He could either not do it, or pull back his entire mouth region and show all the foolish mammals why he and his ancestors had not changed in several million years.

If Hermes' attitude was not bag enough, the brash lad also to put his contempt of authority into physical form as well by blowing smoke in Lelei's face. Lelei felt the sting of an urge to snap at the rings, and the boy, but he held back. Instead he took a breath then exhaled strongly, though his gills, blowing the smoke in all directions around and away from Lelei, turning the arrogant smoke into his own tobacco-scented aura.

"Oh, just browsing? Then perhaps..."

Being off-duty, Lelei was a little more free to be creative with his actions. Though he had his suspicions of the boy, he had not solid proof, and without proof he could do nothing. He could, however, keep an eye on him. Reaching behind himself, Lelei pulled Siri out from behind him and pushed her right inbetween Hermes and himself. Lelei put on a semblance of a smile.

"... You would not mind if Siri and I joined you. By the way, you may call me Lelei..."
