The two began down the hallway. The dryad was leading them towards the exit, but she'd set a comfortable pace for them to keep chatting.

"Hmm? Can't eat anymore? How do you mean?" she asked. Noting the slight vagueness in his words, she kept her tone on the gentle side just in case.

When Olwen started walking, Carmin followed suit.

“Oh.” Carmin hadn’t realized how he’d worded his answer. He shouldn’t have said anymore, it should’ve just been that he couldn’t eat. “Um, cause I don’t have a stomach and intestines and such so I can’t really do food, just water.”

His answer was kind of a dodge. He explained why he couldn’t eat but never touched on the fact that he used to be able to.

"Ah." Olwen chuckled at the seemingly obvious answer. He did, in fact, look like a plant. "Of course, I'm sorry. Thirsty then?"

She seemed to either forget about his previously odd wording, or perhaps she just shrugged it off. The look in her eyes was simply a friendly one, and didn't give away which it was.

The two continued on down the stairs to the first floor, and were nearly out of the building. Once outside, Olwen continued forward, leading them into the trim courtyard.

"Yeah, I can drink." Carmin held up his water bottle as he spoke, ready to sip it whenever they got to wherever they were headed.

Luckily, Olwen didn't seem to ask any questions about the anymore that he'd left out. Looked like he was getting let off the hook.

As they left the building, Carmin couldn't help but wonder where they were heading to eat. He hadn't really explored around the campus much and wasn't too sure where the cafeteria even was, but he assumed that was likely where they were going. "Where are we heading to? The cafeteria?"

By now they'd reached the middle of the courtyard. The fountain came into view, its pretty spouts of water within earshot. But this is where the dryad stopped. She looked down at him as he asked where they were going, and with an ever so slight smirk, she simply sat down on one of the benches there.

"How about here?" she smiled. She set her books aside. The whole time they'd been chatting, she had been carrying around a small bundle wrapped up in a patterned cloth. Opening it now as she took it onto her lap, she revealed it to be a small lunch box.

"It's not the most private spot around, but I do think the garden is lovely."

Just as soon as he'd asked the question of where they were heading, they had arrived. Carmin was surprised. Had he been alone as per the usual, he probably would've ended up sitting around this area anyway. It was one of his favorite places to read while he was on campus.

"Sure, this works fine." Carmin walked over to the bench and lifted himself on fairly easily. He twisted open the cap to his water bottle and took a small sip while Olwen told him about the area. He didn't care much for the flowers, but she wasn't wrong, the place was pretty good. "Yeah, it's nice."

He smiled. It was slowly becoming clearer to him that he wasn't quite the lone wolf he liked to believe he was. He actually enjoyed the company of others, and they were rarely as bad as he imagined when he got to know them.

Carmin took a peek at the small lunchbox, watching with curiosity as she opened it up. "Whatcha got there?"

"Hmm? Oh, nothing special. Just leftover stew, mashed potatoes, and some bakestones I made with my mother for Lammas," she replied humbly. She carefully lifted the lid, and inside the food items were neatly placed in their own little compartments.

She took a bite of potatoes, but her attention was quickly removed from her food. She gazed away in thought and swallowed slowly.

"I'm wondering... You weren't sure you could reply to me telepathically, but you could certainly hear me earlier. Oh, you don't mind if we return to this topic, do you? Maybe we should experiment with it a little," she suggested. It seemed that once Olwen was curious of something, she wasn't quick to let it go.

"Would you be interested in trying?"

He'd heard the word Lammas once before from a teacher, it was some sort of holiday, but they hadn't elaborated on exactly what people did on said holiday. Either way, the food looked good. "Oh, nice."

He took a sip of water again while Olwen took a bite of her food. He couldn't help but feel a little jealous whenever he ate with other people. He missed being able to taste good food, but he reassured himself that it wouldn't be forever. He'd fix it eventually, somehow.

When the idea of communicating using Olwen's odd plant telepathy was brought up once again, Carmin was definitely down to test it out. He already wanted to and just wasn't sure how. He also took note of how Olwen seemed to ask if it was okay for them to return to the topic. She sure was polite.

"Yeah, for sure!" Carmin set his water bottle down on the bench then hopped down, standing in front of her as if it would help the signal get through. "So how do I do this exactly?"

Olwen blinked down at him, a little surprised by his eagerness. It made her smile.

"Well, I could start by sending you messages. Maybe if you get used to listening, replying will come more naturally.

"It's... going to be a little tricky to explain, I think, since I've been doing this since I was a child. I'm sorry in advance if I make it confusing," she smiled awkwardly.

"Just try to look for passing thoughts that don't feel like they belong to you. Don't think too much, either, or you might not hear it. Ready?"

She spoke a tad more quickly than normal. It wasn't hard to tell that she was as excited as he was, maybe even more so. Talking to plants was nice, of course, but she'd never been able to speak this way with a person before. It was new, and a little special.

"What's your favourite class?" She decided to say something easy. She felt she didn't articulate the message as clearly as before, though. Even in her own mind, the words felt a bit fuzzy, but she sent it off feeling hopeful.

"Alright, that makes sense I suppose." Carmin wore a serious look, paying attention with determination to get this right. He didn't really have actual powers of his own and couldn't even strengthen his body physically anymore, this was the first time in a long time that he had the chance to train something other than his intelligence. He hadn't realized just how desperate he was for something like this.

"Look for passing thoughts that aren't mine, and don't think too much." He gave a firm nod. "Got it." As soon as he finished speaking, he disappeared into his thoughts, closing his eyes thinking it might help him focus.

Carmin hadn't spent a lot of the past few years communicating with people, keeping mostly to his own thoughts. But perhaps that could pay off now. He figured he'd have no trouble finding a stray thought in his own head. And he did, sort of.

He was thinking purely about focusing, then had a thought about class. Something class? He wasn't too sure but it had something to do with class, so that's what he said aloud. "Class?" He was a little confused by this and seemed pretty unsure when he said the word.
