Late after a long day of job hunting, Haritia had wound down at one of her favourite bars in the Strip. Well, if you consider drinking, cracking jokes, and laughing hysterically as “winding down”. The sphinx never really was one for quiet time. She had had quiet time for hundreds of years. Since coming to the island, that ended up being an activity she’d only engaged in a handful of times. Drinking with other regulars was more her style. And drink she did.

A little too much, maybe. When a guy from down the bar called her an idiot following one of her jokes, getting a laugh out of his own buddies, she’d usually only shout back something equally rude. She was one too many shots of whiskey past that, though.

She marched across the bar and got right up in his face. “What’d you say to me, pal?”

Sadly, he saw it coming when she took a swing at him. A wiry fellow – and a sober one at that – ducked and took off. However, the sphinx had packed too much power into her punch, and couldn’t stop it as her first continued on… into a poor, innocent bystander.

Aw, shit!

Theo had been at the bar for a short while. He was there mostly to be around people and less to actually talk with them. Drinking, wasn't something that did much for him, but that was to be expected of someone who doesn't need to eat or sleep. He still maintained the ability to do so though and that was one thing that kept the artificial angel connected to his humanity.

He'd actually shrunk back a bit into the background of the bar when he realized one of his housemates was here. Haritia seemed to be having a good ole time. That is until someone called her an idiot. Theo sighed, he had a feeling it would probably only escalate from here. Where he probably would have let that roll off his back, she was heading over to the asshole to take a swing.

He had to intervene now. Fortunately the other guy dodged out of the way. Which left Theo there to take the hit right to the face. Yeah. It hurt, but he would mark it in the upper tiers of ordinary pain. He staggered a bit from it but recovered quickly.

"Ow," he said in his usual tired tone. Theo sighed and gave her a flat look.

Haritia paused, fist still held in its follow-through position. She blinked hard at the man, not realizing who he was for a moment.

"Theo? The hell you doin' here?" she exclaimed. Having only recently moved in, Haritia still wasn't too familiar with her housemates. Besides the Halloween party, she'd only spent a small amount of time with each of them in the following month. Theo was probably the one she knew the least. She didn't usually click with more introverted types.

"Aw. Ouch. Geez. Sorry about that, bud. I almost broke your perfect face...!" she quipped apologetically, scanning his face for any injury.

The other patrons had realized by now there wasn't going to be an all-out brawl, and went back to their drinks.

Theo was more or less fine. That was definitely a solid punch he took, but there was no bruising to be found. His healing abilities had kicked in the second she hit him. He rubbed the spot where she hit him and gave her a genuine smile.

"Takes more than that to break this face," he answered. It was fine really. Seemed like things were settling down since the situation itself quickly de-escalated. "Anyway I've just kinda been hanging around. Figured you could use a hand though. Or um... a face."

The sphinx grinned at his jokes.

"D'awww, you lookin' out for little ol' me?" she slurred a bit. "Don't you worry, buddy, I could'a had him! But here. Lemme buy you a drink."

Before he could protest she began to wave down the bartender. "I'll get ooone more whiskey. And you, what's your drink?"

"Listen if you get hauled off by the cops our rent might go up. I can't sit by and let that happen," he explained. He was still joking, but as usual was managing with his straight face. Theo was surprisingly snarky when he was talking with people he was reasonably comfortable with. This small handful of people included his housemates, and people he went to school with. "I didn't want you to get beat up either."

"Shouldn't you be slowing down a bit? You're kinda wasted, and you almost got into a fight," he was giving a bit more of a concerned look. That didn't stop him from ordering though, "I'll have a rum."

"I'm fine, I'm fine," she said, waving her hand dismissively. The bartender looked reluctant, but he brought the two their drinks. Haritia took a decent sip of hers as soon as the glass was placed on the bar. She then immediately turned her gaze back onto Theo.

“So, what’s your schtick?” she asked boldly with a grin. “I don’t actually know a whole lot about ya, come to think of it. Just that you’re a college boy.”

Theo looked a bit surprised when Haritia just flat out asked him what his deal was. It wasn't that it was this deep dark secret, but it also wasn't usually something he just shared with anyone. He started to try to talk her down, but he knew she wouldn't take no for an answer.

"Well it's kinda heavy but alright," he took a smaller sip of his drink, savoring the taste before he started, "Long story short me and some other kids were turned into artificial angels by some cult at least one of our parents were part of. They trained us to use our abilities, and tortured us. Said they were testing the limits of our regeneration. I'm the last one left."

He took a noticeably larger drink downing most of it. "I uh busted out. Came here with my mother. And yeah, that's my tragic backstory."

Even drunk, Theo's story made Haritia pause as the weight settled on the conversation.

"Geez... Makes my life sound like daisies and butterflies." As she noticed him down most of his glass, she absentmindedly tapped the counter to get a refill for him.

"Guess I don't have to freak about sockin' ya then, huh. And your mom, she wasn't in the cult too, right?"

"Well, everyone's got something right? One thing to come out of it was I can definitely take a hit or twenty. That and if anyone does get beaten up I can heal them," he shrugged and downed his refill as he was asked about his mother's involvement. "She had no idea until it was too late for her to stop it. And even then the might have tried to kill her... or worse."

"Never really imagined myself in a place like this. Living a mostly normal life. I think it's weird this is the second home I've moved into where I was the only guy," he sighed and went for another drink because why not? "So what about you then? I've yet to hear you crack a proper riddle Miss Sphinx."
