The large figure in red armor remained seated on the throne. They were quiet for a second become softly chuckling at what Giltenn has said. “You are correct. Where my manners? I am sorry Giltenn, Jude. You stand before the Red King, Lord of the Crimson.” The Red King was still motionless, watching their two guests intently.

Somehow, the fact that they knew who they were seemed strangely foreboding.

"I want to know why you're messing with Aren," Jude said, doing his best to sound imposing and probably doing a terrible job of it, considering he was still effectively hiding behind Giltenn's leg.

The Red King looked at Jude, unphased at his attempt to be intimidating. “Messing with him? I’ve done nothing to him. This is all natural, it’s just his coming of age. A second puberty sort of, just like I had. Tell me, where was I in that vision you saw? I’m curious to see your answer.”

"He doesn't know you," Jude said, firmly ignoring the Red King's question. If he was expecting Jude to play along, he was talking to the exact wrong person. "And he doesn't want to. Cut the connection and be done with them."

The Red King took a long sigh. “You don’t understand Jude. This realm. My being. It cannot be broken. He is what keeps the place together. I am brought to immense sorrow as Aren was not given the life by choice as most do but it is something he must live with. Your world’s great hunger isn’t the only unstoppable force reality has given Jude. The Crimson Realm must stand.”

If Giltenn had been a great furry beast, this would have been the point where Jude tangled his fingers into the fur. As it was, he felt exposed - still dwarfed between Giltenn's mass, but more or less unguarded.

You are in no danger, Giltenn said, just to him.

"You're in the wrong reality, then," Jude said. "This world doesn't want any part of that."

The Red King moved slightly, stretching his arms. “Jude. I’m sorry for any mess Aren’s coming of age could have caused but this is important. This is an unbreakable cycle, again I’m sorry and I wish there was another way. I’ve tried my best to nurture and care for him as what he saw as his imaginary friend back in the lab but I can’t do that anymore. Soon he will reach the status of throne and his work will truly begin.”

Cycles. Unbreakable cycles, inevitable and vast. Like the Gultha consuming worlds.

Jude didn't like any of it. He didn't like that there was someone apparently watching over Aren, and that the person had access to... what? Something great and vast and too powerful for Manta Carlos.

"And what is his work, exactly?"

The Red King sighed. “He is my throne. No not a literal throne but instead my most elite warrior, and my bodyguard. A throne doesn’t have many duties besides protecting me and even then they only are required to enter the crimson realm when I deem it nessacary. They are also the keeper of the realm. The reason you receive visions when trying to do something mentally to Aren is because he is the gateway. It is his soul that keeps crimson stable. The vision you saw wasn’t me unleashing that creature but instead my predecessor, an act I still question to this day. I was the other figure next to them. The other main duty a throne has is heir to the crown. When Aren reaches a level of power equal to mine he shall take my place in this armor while I will finally ascend to join former kings in the afterlife. This will likely take at least a century so you have no need to worry about that now dear Jude.”

See, it all sounded well and good, except for one little thing.

"And he doesn't even get a choice?"

Because that was something that mattered a lot to him. That was the position Rory was in - of being the supposed inheritor of a crown she didn't want, with powers and responsibilities she had no desire for.
