The holiday season was a busy time for the Sugarpop café. Families with kids free from their classes and even adults in the mood for a snack always found their way into the building throughout the day. The kitchen staff were constantly at work, the scent of baked confectionaries could even be smelt from outside the colourful cake-shaped building.

Within the café itself, surrounded by the pink, frilly decorations, among all the workers and customers enjoying their sweets, was a very out of place young girl behind the cash register.

Euphemia didn’t really need a part-time job. Her living expenses were covered by the school, she didn’t need to eat in order to function, and there were rarely material goods she felt the need to purchase. So, the money wasn’t necessary. However, she was well aware of her own deficiencies when it came to her interpersonal skills, her difficulties with interacting with others, and how she occasionally came off as creepy. One of her teachers had suggested she look for a part-time job to help her learn how to improve her people skills, and the café happened to be looking for employees at the time.

The fact that such an emotionless, gloomy, dour girl was wearing such a bright uniform and working in such a cutesy café created a contrast that was almost comical to look at.

For now, it was later in the afternoon, most of the more eager customers had already left, leaving a scarce few still inside, enjoying their treats. Euphemia stood impassively behind the counter as normal, there was another half hour until her shift was over. She expected to have to do little in the meantime, her mind was already wondering to what she was going to be doing for the rest of the afternoon.

The day dragged on with time crawling by lower than a snail's pace. Every second felt like living through an eternity and every class just another vicious yet repetitive cycle. In summary, school had become a bore. Hence the moment the ending bell sounded, Raella had already decided to head over to Manta Carlos City. Thankfully, by the time she set foot on city ground, it was well into the afternoon and the lunch hour crowd had long dissipated.

As she strolled down the winding pathways, none of the stores seemed to appease her. Perhaps her dull state of mind had attributed into the way she perceived her surroundings. Nonetheless, Raella kept walking, her purse firmly clutched in the palm of her hand, refusing to spare a second glance at the stores adorning the streetside.

That is...until she caught sight of a sign labeled "Sugarpop cafe". The first thing which came to mind was "Pink. Very pink." and the second was "Hey that cashier looks a little familiar" Without hesitation, Raella pushed open the doors to the cafe and strode in, making a beeline to the counter. At first glance, Raella was unable to identify who she was but upon closer inspection, everything finally clicked in place. Though sheathed in a very uncharacteristic pink outfit, her pale complexion, apathetic expression, and tall but slender build just spelled Euphemia.

Folding her wings neatly behind her back, Raella relaxed her posture, slumping forward as she rested both her forearms on the counter before she tilted her head upwards, locking her gaze on the other. Voice escaping her lips as a low purr and tone that of a playful flirt, she finally addressed the cashier.

"Well well well, fancy seeing you here, darling. Would it be possible to place an order for you?"

Euphemia was occupied with watching the rest of the café, minding the remaining patrons, when her attention was swiftly drawn to the entrance by the door suddenly pushing open, the rapid footsteps coming right for her. She blinked twice, as the familiar demon came to a stop in front of her. The girl had a good memory, and after their last encounter, she had no trouble recognising Raella. Unlike their first meeting, Euphemia didn’t show any sign of being on her guard against her. She was expected to act professional at work, and besides, she supposed their little truce from the previous night was still in effect.

“Ah, Raella, good afternoon.” She nodded her head politely. “Welcome to the Sugarpop café.

As the other girl spoke, Euphemia tilted her head to the side, questioningly, her face as impassive as ever.

“I am afraid that employees such as myself are not allowed to eat during our shifts.” She calmly explained, showing no visible reaction to Raella’s usual flirty demeanour. “However, if there is anything else you desire, please do not hesitate to ask. I will do my best to fulfil your needs.”

Her lips tugged down just a tiny bit as she spoke, as if she were just about to frown to herself. She’d been working at the café long enough to where she’d had many “unholy” patrons, and while it didn’t put her on edge like it did initially, it did still feel very weird to her.

Upon hearing Euphemia's rather deadpan reply, Raella resisted the urge to chuckle and let out an exaggeratedly exasperated sigh instead. Taking a step back, she resumed her previous posture; arms idly by her side and wings neatly folded behind her back as she scanned the menu. To say the truth, since she had only experienced ordering food in the school cafeteria, Raella was somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer number of options she had.

"Uhm..."
she began because she good at social interactions like that. With her voice a little shakey and her tone still unsure, she then blurted out, not wanting to take too long to place an order. "I... I guess I'll take a medium size of any drink of anything you recommend. Preferably one with chocolate or caffeine in it."

Once having ordered, Raella let a delicate silence settle between the two for a few moments for Euphemia to calculate the payment before she spoke out again, her sentences coming across in a much more composed and casual manner. "Just curious but why would you work as a cashier? No offense, it just seems a just a little odd for you to be in such a social line of work. Wouldn't you feel more comfortable in an office job?"

The more Raella pondered about it, the more she couldn't find out what her intentions were. Though Raella didn't know for sure, she assumed that Euphemia was smart and most likely skilled in combat as well hence she could probably qualify in jobs more suiting of her apathetic nature. Her reason behind applying to be a cashier was a mystery.

"Very well, I believe you may enjoy the hot chocolate then."

It was a safe option, a lot of people had been ordering it lately on account of the weather and they seemed to enjoy it. Though because of the many variations with Euphemia's body, she didn't really know how it tasted. She placed the order with the register and gave Raella the price, before answering her question.

"My comfort was not a factor in my decision." She explained. "As I am sure you have no doubt noticed, my social skills are...poor. I had hoped that a job that put me in contact with a great deal of people would help improve this."

She gave another small frown after her explanation, a small break from her usual apathy. She didn't feel she was making much progress with her improvement, even though making conversation while customers waited was encouraged. She found herself feeling just a little frustrated.

There was a small beat, before she continued.

"I also lack the qualification to do much other work." She admitted. "The skills I acquired before coming to Manta Carlos, while at an sufficiently adequate level, have no practical use in a normal workforce."

'Adequate' was a bit of an understatement. Euphemia had spent almost her whole life training, hunting, fighting, killing. She didn't think her skills were impressive, but that didn't change the fact they were at a high level.

"There is...little place in civilian society for one such as myself, I believe."
