"You can't see them, but there's fences up at the edges. All my neighbours are the sort of people who appreciate their own privacy, so beyond the occasional community barbeque, we don't see much of each other." He wasn't the kind of man who wanted to go join a country club, but it would do him no good to become a complete recluse. No, better to be just social enough to attract no attention for it. "And the property has security, of course, to keep people out." more than once he'd had someone try and burgle the house, but it always ended poorly. After all, the house was never completely empty. There was always someone in the house, whether it was him, his parents, or a member of the staff.

"The house is the family house - it's been with us for generations. Which means it's a family house. My grandfather had four children that lived with him, and more than one lived in the house after they got married. It's fairly empty now, but eventually I'll have children of my own running around filling it up. I'm unfortunate enough to have no siblings, but I still have plenty of extended relatives who stop by and visit every so often." He'd have to remember to make a point to invite Aloysius back. If nothing else, he'd love to give his dog free reign in the yard. "I prefer to think of it not as my house, but as my families house. I suppose you live in the city?"

RE: A Taste of Bison [Crit]

Now Ignatius was guaranteed to have the envy of Lelei. A big private backyard all to himself sounded wonderful and liberating. If Lelei was in a position similar to Ignatius', he too would have a large private yard to gallivant about in. However, he would have a more expansive salt water pool. It would be wider and deeper, and would basically serve as his own private mini-lake for when he did not want to trek all the way to the beach or deal with the crowds.

The staffer returned with their drinks and Lelei thanked them before sipping the wonderful whiskey he had been provided. Lelei had no training or education in the matter, but just from experience he could tell that Ignatius was providing him with top shelf liquor.

"Still sounds like you got a big empty house most of the time. When do you plan on having those 'children' to fill it up?"

The whiskey was already making him feel better and more relaxed, even before it was even in his veins.

"Yeah. I have an apartment near downtown. It keeps my close to the police HQ and within a reasonable distance of the school. It's not fancy, but it's comfortable. Big enough for me and a guest or two.

You can come visit if you're feeling up to it sometime. I'll make sure to clean up and stock up on some drinks. And I'll get some red meat to cook too."

Perhaps he'd invited it by mentioning future children, but there wasn't much he could do with that. "Whenever I get married." He said, brushing the question off quickly. Better to just move on, and not bring attention to it.

He nodded politely, although he had no real intention of invading a small apartment. Small was... well, small. He was not a small man, and had no real desire to impose on someone when he had a literal mansion at his disposal. He preferred to host - then it was on his terms.

"I'm sure the bison will be out soon, shall we grab a seat?" It was obviously a rhetorical question, because he immediately stood, gesturing over to the table before he moved over, grabbing one of the seats for himself, leaving Lelei opposite for him on a rather unusual looking chair. It stood out from the place setting - but it was also the only one without a back, which would allow Lelei to sit in it without causing too much discomfort for his tail.

RE: A Taste of Bison [Crit]

Lelei seemed to not notice the discomfort his child question caused Ignatius. The answer he did give was satisfactory enough and straight forward, so Lelei had no follow ups. Even if he did, even Lelei could sense that such a question would be a little too personal. But he did glean the fact that Ignatius was single from the reply. Whether or not that meant anything, to either of them, would remain to be seen.

It took a moment for Lelei to get out his chair. Only Ignatius getting out of his seat signaled that maybe Lelei should so the same, and he hopped up with his whiskey still in hand.

The seat left for Lelei puzzled him for a second because of how different it looked. But when he sat on it, he found it to be quite comfortable. It was a surprised given the way it looked but the backless nature gave his tail room to be, and he appreciated that. Still, he tried to remain in good posture and kept himself from just grabbing any silverware rashly.

"Before it gets here, let me just thank you again for inviting to dine with you at your home."

As giddy as he was to finally sink his many many teeth into some bison meat, Lelei would not let himself forget to be grateful for Ignatius' hospitality. Even before the bison arrived, a part of Lelei was trying to think of a way to thank him for the meal.

Ignatius said confidently. "It's nice to share a meal with someone who can appreciate it." He said, and not a moment too soon, as a man who was very clearly the chef appeared, carrying two plates that were both steaming into the night air. He set one in front of Ignatius, and then one in front of Lelei, before explaining the meal.

"Your appetizer. Smoked Bison with melted fennel and leeks, hearts of palm salad, and a blood orange-tangerine vinaigrette." It was all rather elaborately prepared, and with a small bow, he excused himself back to the kitchen to prepare the main course. The portion sizes were sizeable compared to the average appetizer, but still fairly dainty - but it was really only an interesting alternative to the main course, something to whet their appetite. The buffalo was set into three small slices, topped with the fennel-leek mixture, and then the salad was placed on top.

Ignatius grinned, fetching his fork and wasting no time in popping the first slice into his mouth, savoring the flavor of it. He didn't eat much on the vegetable side of things, but it added an interesting taste and texture to it.

RE: A Taste of Bison [Crit]

Lelei chuckled to himself and raised his whiskey glass to Ignatius.

"Quite. Only men like us can appreciate fine meat at a certain level. People can eat above their place in the food chain, sure, but they miss out on the nuances of meat."

His proclamation was more than a little boastful, but it felt appropriate and he trusted Ignatius to be on the same wavelength as him. They were a pair of alpha predators, the apex of their respective food chains. All meat was available to them and, in a biological sort of way, belonged to them in the end. Even when they were as civilized as they were, it was fun to fall back on their evolutionary statuses from time to time.

There was a hum of approval from Lelei as the meals approached the table. His nose was locked onto his plate the moment it came into view, and he had stop himself from digging-in immediately. Its look matched its smell. Lelei had never seen such a dish, or presentation, outside of a fancy restaurant.

"So fancy! It looks so nice I almost don't want to eat it."

He said as he picked up one of the slices with a fork.

"Almost."

For all of his excitement, Lelei still managed to savor his first bite of bison. He was slow to bite fully on the meat, as if to let each tooth sink satisfactorily into it before the next. The juices flowed into his mouth and mingled with vinaigrette. He was smiling as he ate, and only spoke when nothing was left in his mouth.

"Wow! That's... That's really good. Even the texture is better than the steaks I usually get."

Carnivores were more likely to eat meat, so they would have to have a pallet better suited to tasting meat. Omnivores were more diverse, so the whole thing was just far more spread out. They might be able to appreciate plant matter more, but they couldn't taste the finer flavors in meat.

He found it hard not to stare as Lelei ate. It was just so... so unwieldy. It had never occurred to him that Lelei didn't have lips, but... well, he didn't. He had no lips, and even as dainty as he was, there was still a bit of mess.

"Bison is lower in calories, and has slightly more protein. It's also leaner - less fat. It makes for a different texture, which is the main draw of it." It was something different and unique, and wasn't that what everyone wanted? Something different.

They didn't have long to wait. Ignatius had only just polished off the next two slices of the appetizer when the chef appeared again, this time carrying the main course. The steaks themselves were nicely sized and prepared rare, laid out on a plate without added garnish.

"A T-bone steak with a bit of herb butter." Far simpler than the appetizer, but also far larger. It took more effort to keep a bison cooked evenly when they were larger than usual, and he laid out a plate in front of each of them before bowing once more and retreating.

Ignatius helped himself to a bit of his drink before he collected his knife. "Enjoy." He said simply, starting to cut his steak.

RE: A Taste of Bison [Crit]

Lelei's messy eating was something that he had grown accustomed to, and grown used to managing. In the ocean, it had been little trouble since all of his fellow shark people ate the same way and food bits just floated away. But on land, those food bits fell out of his mouth and humans did not take too well to watching Lelei chomp down due to his lack of flat teeth.

So even though he tried to not make a mess, he still frequently dabbed himself with a napkin and consciously tried to keep his mouth closed as much as possible. For the appetizer, it was an easier task since Lelei was also trying to savor the bison.

The main course, however, would prove to be more of a challenge. The sight of the slabs of meat, prepared simply and cooked to perfection, ignited the predator in Lelei. He wanted to grab the hunks of bison with his hands and just chomp his maw over it. But he held back, of course, and went for his knife and fork.

"You're spoiling me, Ignatius. This bison is almost too good."

Fine whiskey and bison steak. It was the best dinner that Lelei had enjoyed in a long time, and probably would remain so for a while. Not only was the food good, but he was also in the company of a large man whom could also appreciate the meal on the same level. Out on the deck, Lelei could better appreciate the private dinner he was sharing with Ignatius. Again, they were two alphas indulging their hungers on private land. It was their domain. (Technically just Ignatius', but Lelei felt like he could put himself alongside him)

"So how often do you break out the bison? I imagine it's only for special occasions, but do you serve it during business shindigs? Or is it reserved for private dinners like this?"

He'd had plenty of dinners that surpassed this one, but he did have a place in his heart for bison. It was like beef... only better. Well, better than most beef. Wagyu - proper, real wagyu - was a class of it's own. Matsusaka was by far the best, but if he could get it, any real Japanese wagyu would do.

"Oh, only rarely. It's a massive pain to import to the islands. I have to find someone willing to sell, and is willing to do so while a shipment is coming in." Lining up those two events could be difficult. "It's really not worth the effort for business. The majority of people wouldn't really appreciate the difference anyway." People simply didn't have a good taste for that kind of thing. "The human palate really isn't meant for the finer details. That sort of money would be better spent on a different preparation. The difference in steaks for omnivores matters less than the preparation, I've been told." Well, minor differences - anyone could tell the difference between a high end and a low end steak, but a high end and a very high end steak would go right over their heads.

RE: A Taste of Bison [Crit]

"Yeah... Sometimes I wonder how much non-carnivores miss out on..."

He also wondered what it would be like to have flat teeth for chewing, or even just the sharp-but-flat teeth humans had in the front of their mouths. Perhaps it was just him being unimaginative, but he could not quite simulate in his mind what it would be like to have a row of flat teeth somewhere in his mouth. It just felt... icky to him. Like having blunted, broken versions of what he already had.

The rest of the steak dinner passed pleasantly. Lelei got a refill or two of his whiskey, and he conversed with Ignatius about various things. Mostly he wanted to get to know Ignatius more personally and make jokes about all the non-alphas the two of them had to associate with on the regular. He said nothing too offensive or smug though. Lelei liked people in general, but he it was not often he got to hang out with another large, intimidating apex predator like himself.

At the end, he gently laid his fork and knife down, gently patted down his mouth with the napkin and sighed happily. The only thing left on his plate was spare meat juice.

"That was something else, Ignatius. I feel... full, and that doesn't happen very often. We sharks can pack away a lot. I've had steaks and meat before. But this felt more filling and substantive than those."

He looked over to the pool and swirled his whiskey.

"So what's next? The pool? Unless you got some kind of bison dessert. Which... Sounds interesting."
