Astor was in a good mood as of late. It wasn't that Astor was normally very sad, as much as people liked to believe. He just found it hard to do many things, like socialize and look pleasant. People often told him to turn that frown upside down, and his usual response to that was, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. But lately...

His mom was starting to notice the changes. The extra spring in his step, the cheery disposition in his demeanor, the way he would zone out while staring at something with a smile that could barely be contained. He didn't notice there was anything odd about his behavior until she pointed out he'd been grinning at his mashed potatoes for two whole minutes.

And today she wanted him to help her make cookies.

As a disclaimer, Astor loved making cookies with his mom. He loved his mom, and he loved cookies, and he loved Halloween. Personally, the icing was always the best part for him because he could be as creative as he wanted with the blood. But what if there was other stuff about his behavior he hadn't noticed? What if she found out??? He knew, rationally, his mom would be a hundred percent supportive, but he was still embarrassed and a bit paranoid. What if she didn't like him being an angel?

Astor covered his face with a pillow and rolled around his massive bed for a bit before dropping on the floor and deciding yeah. What's the worst that could happen?

Brain, please don't answer that.

The weather was getting chillier out. Astor pulled on a skull-covered sweater and descended the Grimm manor's massive steps and entered the kitchen.

'But Lila, isn't your house halloween themed and scary, just normally?' they ask her. She always heard the same thing. So naive. Her answer was equally consistent, and she'd say it however much it needed to be said. There's always room for more spooky.

That, and extra cookies. Honestly. Everyone else needed to step up their damn game. She wouldn't turn down some proper competition, a challenge to her many skills, as long as they didn't try to mess with the super rad parties she held this time of year. Those were just too sacred.

Messing with them would be extremely rude, and she'd probably be offended enough to bite someone over it. For now, though, she'd convert her offense over this hypothetical situation into baking determination. All mortal worries could be put to use in ways like this, she'd been wise enough to realize. Just a taste of her extensive and mystifying mom knowledge. Truly impressive.

She had a very monstrous hoard of materials spread out over almost all of the surfaces in the kitchen. All the expected base ingredients for things as well as… oddities and extremes. Cookie cutters, hard mode. Sprinkles, expert edition. Intense. Bat mama went all the way.

The spoopy train never slowed down.

Lila spun around, skeleton pattern apron spinning with her, as Astor entered the kitchen. It took her about two seconds to bounce over to him and pull the boy (and his cute lil sweater- they matched!) into her arms. "There's mama's baby! Come into the workshop, make yourself at home- and get an apron so you don't dust yourself up too badly." She gave him a kiss on his forehead, and nuzzled their noses together, before bustling off to fuss with troublemaking kitchen utensils.

"What kind of cookies do you want to start up first, sweetie?" she called back.

Growing up as the son that liked to bake with mama, Astor came into the kitchen ready. Astor was already conceptualizing cookie designs in his head. Today he was thinking: Bats. It wasn't just a coat of blue icing on a sugar cookie, though. There was artistry involved. Detail. Mama introduced adding raspberry jam to make them look like they were vampire bats a few years ago, and it was a game changer ever since.

He walked over to the counter and pulled on his usual apron, which was a Kill the Cook one with cute cartoonish blood splatters. Astor gave his mama a small smile before walking over to the cookie cutters.

"I was thinking vampire bats, but also, um... I don't know if it's a good idea but... for a skull set, do you think it would be neat if we put gummy worms around the eye holes to make it look like it's surrounded by insects? We can also put chocolate chip ants. Um." He rubbed his blushing cheeks. "It's... just an idea."
