Appearance Description

Damon is clearly not human. He has red eyes with black sclera, pure white skin and hair (although the hair turns black lower down), and needle-looking sharp teeth just normally, as well as giving off a vibe of it. Not to mention, when in bright light, especially sunny daylight, he kind of... shifts and warps, ever so subtly. Being in very clear, bright view does odd things.

Damon's usual look is a bedhead and shit eating grin. He's scruffy in appearance, not really caring all that much, usually just wearing a button up with the sleeves rolled up, lazily put on tie, and dark slacks. When out in public, he'll usually wear pitch black sunglasses and keep his mouth mostly shut, to freak people out less. Because while he has shapeshifting abilities, it's only to turn into something worse.

Damon has a bit of a broad nose, a square face, and lazily drooping eyes (that can sharpen and warp to scary extents, like most of him). His eyebrows are thick and so is his hair texture. His skin bruises easily because he likes it that way, and wears bruising and battering with pride, though never can have scars. He has some light chin scruff and sideburns.

Damon is five feet eight inches, and has a very sturdy/stout shape to him. He has just the tiniest bit of a soft tummy/the slightest signs of chub, though, which is kind of adorable.

In terms of his abilities and species status, Damon can take on all kinds of forms, as long as they're more fear inducing.

Damon's voice is gravelly, on the deeper and richer side of things, and a bit grating.

Personality Description

Damon's a goddamn obnoxious cocky shitlord. He's vulgar, insensitive, and rough around the edges- and in love with it. He likes carnal pleasures, whether positive or negative leaning, and is a big thrill seeker. He's irresponsible, corrupt, and doesn't hesitate to screw others over to save his own skin.

And he's with the police. Why? Because he's too useful to let go, hasn't publicly crossed too painful of a line yet (he's not that stupid, and is also good at not leaving traces of things), and they'd rather have him with them than against them. But it doesn't change the fact that for the most part, everyone there hates his guts.

Still, he's way smarter than his personality might make him seem. He's got great intuition, instincts, and actually doesn't even get tired when doing piles of paperwork. He just gets through things. He's good at thinking like criminals, seeing he rather... is one himself. Oops. He's also a great addition to interrogations/when someone needs a bad cop role filled.

His place at the station doesn't really have an official name, he does a mix of a lot of different things as well as switches around depending on how he's feeling. He does beat cop work, paperwork, detective investigations, and some behind the scenes shady things (of course). At any given time, Damon's usually getting poked for information from both the police as well as criminals. It's a weird setup, and you'd think everyone would turn their backs on him altogether but... neither side of things wants to give in first and leave Damon to their enemies. And, the majority of the time, it's only suspicion deciding he's even up to anything questionable at all.

Damon's extremely morally grey, and will do both good and bad things on total impulse- but he takes it as a half serious thing. Although he has negative leanings, his intent isn't ever to do things for the sake of good or evil or anything like that. He's just here. And he really doesn't want permanent chaos or peace, he likes the day-to-day life he has right now. He also doesn't really want the drama between the cops and criminals to spill over into random bystander's lives too much.

Damon is usually either loud and overenthusiastic, or very chill and go with the flow, not really with much of a middle setting. Damon both has a lot of enemies, and is casually rather popular with his relaxed and friendly attitude. He knows who everyone is and will hang out with you pretty much whenever.

Damon's a huge dork over his only daughter, and won't resist going on about her for hours- it's one of the few softer parts of him/things he actually gives half a damn about. He has a soft spot for kids in general as well, he won't harm them, and he takes cases dealing with others hurting children very seriously and grimly. Teenagers he has exceptions with, and he might hurt an annoying one.

Damon generally always keeps the same outward persona, so you couldn't really tell this at all from your first, second, and tenth glance, but he does get a little more serious when dealing with work.

Damon is actually a super decent person sometimes. Shh, he has an image to uphold.

Species traits/Powers

Boogeyman/Nightmare

Damon's a boogeyman, very literally. A creature of nightmares, the thing in your closet and under the bed, the thought that something is watching you/in your house in the middle of the night, all of that. While he is a part of this reality, he's still a bit off and warped, as being in a physical form and going around in public can be odd for boogeymen. They're more meant for shadows and just socializing with their own kind.

Damon's actually more than a bit domestic for his species, even if he seems anything but to outsiders.

With the species comes immortality (While there is a need/urge to do things like eat, drink, sleep, etc- he won't die from a lack of it, just get uncomfortable, and that's mostly because he's socialized and lived with people who do need this stuff for so long. His species is weird with reality, and have odd adaptability consequences because of it!), enhanced senses/strength, a weirdness when out in daylight/public that presents itself in different ways at different times (but could be compared to glitching, and not looking like he fits in/is really all there at it's mildest), the fact that he can't really be permanently injured/have marks left on him/lose limbs/etc, giving off an uncomfy vibe/aura, and an innate dislike for purity/light/etc.

Fear based shapeshifting

While Damon can't change his natural strength levels with this (although, those are already enhanced, along with other sense, the usual), he can change his appearance and SORT OF how much space he takes up. Like, Damon always has the same presence and aura wise, takes up the same amount of space, but he can make it look and half feel- in a fuzzy questionable sort of way- like he's way bigger or way smaller. Or like he's a swarm of many small things at once. But physically, in the real world, with this he's only half taking up the space, and attacks when bigger or smaller are only half affective. Physically, that is. Mentally, it seems just as real as usual in the moment. It can continue to be remembered as real afterwards, or not, depending on someone's mental strength.

Although his set strength levels/abilities can't change with shapeshifting, the container he's in can definitely change to work as more of a weapon than it already is. Think adding sharp knife like claws and even worse teeth.

Damon's shape shifting ability is controlled by his own imagination, the current general social consensus as to what's scary to people, and by tapping into fears of individuals. For individual fears he puts in a little more effort/focus.

Nightmare creation/entering

If someone is sleeping, Damon can create nightmares to move around in/enter ones that are already occurring. He can use this for travel purposes, as well, as long as one doesn't mind then having to get out of someone's house/wherever they're sleeping. Although it's a scary experience for the one on the other end of it, Damon can use this for communication, as well. Damon doesn't use this ability as much as some others in his species do. This holds a risk of being trapped in someone's head, but not as much as one as with intimate fear inducing.

Fear inducing

Self explanatory. Damon can influence fear in the heads of victims as well as by becoming them. This can be both personal and impersonal. For fear on the go, Damon could simply flick this ability at someone then leave and let their mind eat at itself, though then it would also usually be easier to escape. Sometimes leaving a small sinking feeling in the back of a person's head to fester away for the rest of the day, or to encourage fear and discomfort that's self created, can be more effective in the long run. It's hard to tell what will come of something if Damon isn't around to see it through.

On the more personal end, if Damon is able to sit down and isolate someone with him for a while, he can get into the head and root/claw around, see and remember things, and cause some extra damage. He needs concentration for this, as he focuses his whole being being in someone else's mind. Either he'll leave behind a bit of an unresponsive shell of a body, or actually go inside and physically be in someone else's mental space. Risks of this include getting trapped, or getting damaged because of the victim's body being damaged from the outside. Benefits include even more intimate mind screwery.

Biography

Damon was born as a weird wispy shadowy thing to a boogeyman family. Didn't really have specific parents, was just spawned from the group social collective. Nightmare creatures form surprisingly close and small little groups.

Damon was, of course, a natural at being what he was, but found himself very fascinated by more humanoid leaning lives, as well as larger public social society systems rather than just, for the most part, either teeny little families that keep to themselves or ambitious loners. So he became a more physical boogeyman, adapting to mortal looks and lifespans like one could choose to do, and experienced life.

He also caused a lot of trouble, but took to imitated mortality very swimmingly. Even if it didn't look that way to non-nightmares at all.

Damon got into Starlight Academy when he got his more personable way of presenting himself and life- was there for elementary through high school. He fit into the stereotypical bad boy role for some, but with a lot more monstrous thrown in, as well as being very bright with things he at all cared about. His grades in school were more than stunning. All of this attracted his ex-wife, a young witch with a thing for people like him and they were married as soon as they got out of high school, as well as Damon going into the police. His doing this baffled a lot of people who had been around him back then, but he'd really always had an odd attraction to it/had romanticized the idea of it a lot.

In his twenties, Damon built his current infamous reputation with the police, as well as having a daughter, Lucette, with his wife. This was a wakeup call for both Damon and his wife- for him, it was what actually made him realize he wasn't just playing a game anymore, wasn't just imitating being a person, it was real now. For his wife, it was that this man wasn't good enough to raise their child with.

She started the divorce process within that first year, and Damon tried to spend as much time with his daughter while he still had the chance, but was ultimately going along with everything quietly, because he believed it would be better for the most important thing to him. He wasn't a nice person, and didn't show any signs of being able to change, even if he wanted to. His job was dangerous, and someone could hurt his family to get to him. The list went on and on, and he didn't fight the harsh things his wife said to him, because it was his daughter on the line.

The divorce and sole custody was settled quickly and cleanly, but although his ex-wife would rather he be out of the picture completely, Damon was still able to be around. Both because raising a child alone was hard, and because little Lucette's nightmare side would sometimes cause problems her mother just couldn't fix.

But when the years where the little girl would really start remembering things came in, the ex-wife got a new husband, Ricky (possibly the most boring man in the world), and all contact with Damon really was cut.

Damon dove a lot more into work after that/piled even more onto his questionable habits. There were years where he didn't have anything to do with his daughter, that she barely knew he existed.

But more recently, she got curious enough to seek him out, like a little detective, taking after her dad. This ended in Damon reuniting with his daughter in the middle of the police station and crying a lot in front of all his coworkers. It was surreal for everyone involved, and suddenly, nightmarecop had a kid again.

He still doesn't have custody of her, but nobody can keep her away from him even then. He can't seek her out, but she can do just that with him, and things are better.

Extra

Likes: Lucette, Mike, fighting, entertainment, thrills, spreading fear, soap operas and reality tv shows, cop and detective shows, paperwork, parties, nightclubs

Dislikes: People that are too uptight about everything, responsibility/being lectured about it, only being able to see his daughter at rare times (mostly when she needs babysitting/his ex wife starts feeling sorry for him/he needs to help with nightmare things), how old fashioned and conservative his nightmare family is, HIS EX WIFE'S NEW HUSBAND RICKY, in-laws from Mike's family
