Mathers hadn't been on the island long but so far he knew two things; one was that he wasn't the only one here with powers and the other was that his coworkers loved messing with him. Recently they'd tried convincing him that faeries, FAERIES of all things lived among them. Yeah, they'd have to try at least a little harder than scattering a bit of glitter over his desk to convince him of that. Still, weird things were afoot on the island and as he pressed he hand against the cool brick of the building and stepped through he imagined what he was going to find on the other side.

He'd attuned the building to him a few months ago on a whim and for the most part things had remained steady, at least until a few scant nights ago when he felt SOMETHING change. It was difficult to describe what exactly the sensation was but it felt almost like something was contesting his claim over the area and as he pushed through one building and stepped out of the other he opened his eyes and stared in disbelief at what appeared to be a damn circus suddenly standing where once there was an unused building.

"And what the hell is all this?" he murmured quietly.

The Ringmaster

So far, the carnival was going splendidly! The Ringmaster was a freelancer, and he was being paid by smiles. And the crowd, they definitely had a sea of smiles.

As the impromptu parade of elephants marched along the street, trunks blowing mighty trumpets, the Ringmaster stood at the golden elephant up front. Performers danced and swayed and flipped all over, dazzling the crowd with their tricks.

But there seemed to be one that wasn't dazzled.

Talks had gone with the city mayor, but they weren't particularly good talks. The Ringmaster promised the city mayor a high donation price and a 100% smile rating, and this man in particular wasn't smiling. He tapped his foot with the base of his cane and reappeared in front of Mathers, bowing slightly. "Good day, sir! Enjoying The Carnival?"

A circus. Well, at least he assumed it was a circus. He'd never really gotten to see one as a kid but he'd heard and seen enough of them portrayed on tv and movies to guess. Still, a goddamn circus has somehow made its way across the ocean and set up shop on the island, which was in the middle of absolutely nowhere, almost overnight. He supposed there could be a perfectly mundane way to get all of the supplies, animals and performers here but... yeah no. The sudden appearance of the flamboyantly (at least according to his taste) dressed man gave him a start and he stumbled back crashing painfully against one of the metal supports of the tent. "Sonova- sorry, sorry, give me a second." he pushed himself up and brushed himself off. "I uh, I'm not sure? Just arrived actually."

His gaze strayed to a group of passing performers, momentarily fascinated by a pair of jugglers plying their craft around and above a man breathing fire before shaking his head and offered his hand. "Name's William Mathers, 'm a civil architect employed by the island. Noticed a sudden change in the structures around here and wanted to what's up."

The Ringmaster

The Ringmaster anticipated the awkward fumbling. He turned his magic stick into a hook and pulled the metal bar upright so it wouldn't send the display crashing down. He tipped his hat at the relieved people, then rested his stick under his armpit, listening intently to the man.

"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Mathers. I am The Ringmaster, Antoine Francoise. You can call me Remy, if you wish." He offered a handshake with a smile. "I see, I see. You needn't worry, Mr. Mathers! This entire affair was approved by the city mayor. If you need official documents..." He pulled a coin from William's ear. With a wave of his hand, it turned into a roll of paper — the signed official documents. He offered it to William. "See for yourself. All proceeds for the carnival will go to city's relief efforts to fix all the damages made by the tsunami last April!"

Ah, so this is what is boss had meant when he had a 'funny' idea to help pay for the damages. Wonderful. Well, at least it was for a good cause, and people seemed to genuinely be enjoying themselves. He blinked in surprised at the sudden bit of magic but waved the papers away hurridly. "Oh I'm not worried 'bout the paperwork Mr. Francoise, just uh, wanted to know how the- how you managed to get all this set up so quickly? Coulda sworn that this was just a brick buildin' a coupla'-" He cleared his throat. "a couple of days ago."

Damn accent.

The Ringmaster

The Ringmaster nodded. He listened to Mr. Mathers' concerns with the utmost respect.

"Ah, Mr. Mathers. You're concerned where I put your buildings, but we needed more space for the rides! And the petting zoo! Rest assured, I gave the mayor my word that they'll be back by the end of the month. How?" He smiled. "A magician never reveals his tricks."

They lose so much more flavor that way. The Ringmaster was all about childish wonder. If he had his way, he would never even go through the silly bureaucratic process to begin with. He tugged a trail of handkerchiefs from his sleeve, and when the end came up, he had a stick full of cotton candy. "Cotton canddy?"

"A magician never reveals his tricks."

Mathers hated that phrase. Less because he actually suspected any sort of malice from the ringmaster but rather because it made it much harder to actually fix things when they eventually went wrong.

He accepted a pinch of cotton candy and munched on it pensively. Logically the building was still around here, it had to be. Shifting that much matter over night without any trace of construction machinery was... well it was impossible, right? He was vaguely aware that there were other 'gifted' individuals on the island but no sane organization would allow THAT level of power to wander around unchecked.

Worries aside, Antoine seemed legitimate or at the very least he didn't seem to harbor any ill intent for the locals. Maybe he was just being paranoid.

"I'm... a little curious, Mr. Francoise. I've never really been to a proper circus before, what does a ringmaster actually DO?"

The Ringmaster

The Ringmaster was aware that Mathers was very skeptical about him, and truth be told, he had no other way to explain it other than "magic." It was a playful sort of magic, one filled with wide-eyed childlike wonder. Boxing it into technical terms didn't seem possible. He reluctantly had no answers for him.

But the latter, he was more confident in answering. "Well, Mr. Mathers, the best way to answer that..." He wrapped his arm around Mr. Mathers' shoulders and teleported them at the center of the ring, where all sorts of attractions were happening around them — clowns juggling on unicycles, lion tamers whipping back lions, "...is to show you what I do!"

The spotlight flashed to them. The Ringmaster adjusted his bowtie. "The Ringmaster provides the very important job of keeping everything together. Why, without the Ringmaster, we wouldn't have this!" He snapped his finger, transforming the clown into a sad clown slumping in a corner. "— or this, or this, or this —"

With each snap of the finger, the circus disassembled itself. He nodded, spun his cane once, and teleported them back to where they were originally standing. "The Ringmaster keeps the circus together!"

In the following days, Mathers would be hard pressed to explain what exactly happened when the ringmaster took him by the shoulder. By default he was a man of logic, one who went to great lengths to try to explain away phenomena using rationality despite the talents he himself possessed. This, however... this he couldn't explain.

He found himself suddenly at the center of the ring with the acts swirling and moving all around, the cheers and cries of the audience seemed almost deafening from here. Francoise was saying something but it all sounded so far away, as if he were in a dream. He followed the ringmaster's motions and watched in a daze as a man in full clown gear shifted and morphed into another, the acts transformed into other ones, and the circus tent itself began twisting and warping around him.

No, this is wrong. This wasn't, no, couldn't be happening, there must have been some sort of trick! Perhaps there had been some sort of hallucinogen in the cotton candy or some sort of suggestive hypnotic affect in the music being played throughout the place. The world was a mundane, rational, and most importantly, predictable place. There wasn't room in it for this sort of deviance!

Just as he could feel everything begin to break down it was over and they were back out on the fairway. He leaned heavily against one of the stands, shaking heavily. He caught the tail end of the ringmaster's explanation but was too busy trying to make sense of it all to respond. Eventually the world stopped spinning around him and he managed to glare at the man. "What the hell did you do to me?" he growled, voice growing louder and hysterical as he continued. "What are you doin' to the people here? You expect me ta just believe that you can alter anyone and anythin' within the location of this place to your whim and that the governing body of Manta Carlos just let's you do it? Just who the actual fuck ARE you?"
