So she dragged her trunk through the student lounge realizing it's quite heavy. She had no idea where to go but had been directed to this room being told someone would help her find mher way. She had no idea who to ask. She had never been around this many people before and it's was quite intimidating. Frightening really. She finally dropped my trunk and to wipe away the sweat pouring down her forehead. She had no idea who to ask or who to talk to, so she pulled out the paper with instructions on it but her English reading was not very good. She can speak it fine but read it not so well. She bit her bottom lip and tred to keep a strait face and tried not to panic. Oh dear, she hoped she wouldn't start to cry in front of everyone. That would be bad. So Astial stood there paralyzed just humming an siren lullaby trying to calm herself. Her face had started turning red in embarrassment and hoped she was not making a scene. She wished i could have just jumped into the ocean and swim back home to her mom and dad.

Murphy sighed and flipped through a portfolio as he walked through the dorms. Administration wasn't his usual gig but they'd been too short staffed to handle the new influx of students and had decided to pull him away from his usual post at the library to help handle it. He'd expected to be answering the usual questions; when was curfew, what hours did the cafeteria serve meals, requests for specific kinds of roommates... instead he'd had no less than four people ask if smoking in the rooms was legal (of course not) and twice that many asking the best way to sneak booze past the RA. It seemed that no matter where you went, students were the same everywhere.

He glanced up and saw an mildly distraught looking girl in the hallway. Large trunk, nervous stance, putting on a brave face... yep, that was a newcomer. Putting on his best smile he closed the folder and sped up. "Afternoon, sorry about the wait. Got caught up helping a coupla' other students. M'name's Murphy and I'll be helping you get settled in. Would you happen to be uh..." he glanced at the folder again. "Miss Stormwater?"

Astrial was just about to explode into tears when a young man came over to her with a smile on his face and kind eyes. She wasn't sure if she should be scared or relieved that someone had noticed her. She chose relief the instant he started talking to her and introduced himself. She shyly smiled back at him when he called her Miss Stormwater knowing he was definitely here to help her out. She was told to greet others with a hand shake. She grabbed his hand firmly and pumped his hand vigorously, almost frantically hoping she was doing it right. "Astrial, please, I only get called that when my mom or dad is mad at me." She drops his hand looking concerned, "Am I in trouble? Did I not greet you correctly? Did it do the shake hand thing right or was that the wrong greeting?" Panic flooded her eyes again hoping she hadn't done something wrong already.

Murphy laughed and shook his head at the girl's awkward greeting, slipping back into his more casual speech pattern. "Trouble? Nah, ya don't need to be so formal here, Astrial. Don't worry yourself 'bout the right greeting or being super proper or nothing."

Definitely not from regular human culture, but that wasn't terribly uncommon around here. He motioned to a couple of comfortable chairs, "Would you care to take a seat? I'm sure you've got a bunch of questions, and I'd like to get a little bit of background about you so I can assign you a room that meets any needs you require."

Settling himself into one of them he beamed. "But before that I should prob'ly officially welcome ya to the Manta Carlos Islands! I'm sure you got yer letter with a quick explanation but if you have any further questions please, let me know. It ain't easy to be on yer own for the first time so myself as well as a handful of other older students are here to give ya guidance and... what's the word... mentorship should you want it."

"i did get a letter but I don't understand much of it," Astrial replied to Murphy handing him the letter and the map. "I can speak English fine but can't read it very well. Maps I'm not good with. My mom said once I get to the island that people will point me in the right direction. But if not then i was to not be shy and ask for directions. So I was told to ask for Starlight Dorms and there I would get assistance. My parents also said that once I got here i'd be here for a long while to learn and make friends but they didn't explain and said I'd get my answers when I got here." Astrial smiled weakly. "My parents are my friends so I don't know why I had to come here. There is way too many people for my liking if you ask me. How can anyone learn stuff in all this noise and all this distraction anyways?"

Then she sighed and looked around really clearly for the first time. This place...was...odd. People were flying with wings, someone was running by with a suitcase following him...in the air behind him. This one girl had fangs was talking to a guy with feathers and a crow's head. This one girl left trails of flowers in her wake. She rubbed her eyes to clear them. Surely she was seeing things. This...just...can't...be...real!!! She turned to Murphy who might have noticed her noticing her surroundings. Dumbstruck she finally asked, "What is this place I've been sent to? What's going on?" Astrial looked completely lost and afraid and not sure how to take any of this. She was trying to decide weather this was a good thing or something to panic about. So she searched the eyes of the nice guy trying to talk to her.

Murphy's smile faltered slightly as she went over how she'd gotten here in the first place. Students on the island came from all sorts of backgrounds but it wasn't often that parents just dumped their kids on the island and told them to figure it out themselves, especially without explaining what exactly the island was. It was almost as if they were trying to get rid of.... no, no that couldn't have been it.

He watched her gaze wander to passing students and noted the surprise and wonder in her stare. Surely someone had at least briefed her on what the point of this place was, right? Her last question answered that for him and he felt his stomach twist in sympathy. Did she even know about her own gifts?

"Astrial," he asked gently. "have you ever been in a situation where you were suddenly able to do something that most people can't? Like, flying, or staying underwater for a really long time, or hearing other people's thoughts?"

"Yes, I'm not human. I'm part Elf and part Siren. My mother is a Siren princess and my father very powerful Elf Air Elementalist, and I have powers from both sides. I can hold my breath for hours at a time, heal fish, only salt water ones, and I can swim very very fast." She sucked in a breath and kept going ticking things off with her fingers as she went along, " And i can sing and it tends to hold peoples attention, I can't fly yet but will be able to in time. I can also talk to birds and fish, only salt water fish, and can heal them and birds as well. I can dance in the wind and cause gusts of air and walk lightly in the air like I'm levitating." She took in a large breath of air to fill her lungs. Then she smiled at him and said, "my Da and mum said I could talk about my abilities and specialness and use them once I got to the island and that I would be safe here. I used my powers to save a drowning friend once by getting a wave of water to push him to shore so I could grab his hand. He freaked out and I was never allowed to use my powers outside the yard again." Astrial sighed and blew a some bangs out of her eyes and looked up into Murphy's eyes. "I see things are much different here."

Ah, more siren royalty. Maybe Sonata could help this girl out more than he when it came to powers. "You see correctly. Almost the entire population of Manta Carlos consists of powered individuals in one way or another. I'm not sure about elves but I know we've got a decent siren population who I'll introduce you to once we've got ya settled in."

He nodded sympathetically when she explained the alienation of a friend through use of her powers. "Aye, that's not terribly uncommon unfortunately. A good portion of the world just isn't ready to know about people like us yet. While you're here though, you're free to use them however you wish as long as you're not hurting others with them. If you do have any concerns about power development lemme know and I'll put you in contact with one of our specialists."

A few more lines were scribbled onto the paper before he continued. "That's an impressive suite of powers you've got, I'll make sure to let the administration know so they can connect you with the right teachers. Now, when it comes to your dorm room do you have any questions? Any special requirements? Pets or familiars that need to be accounted for?"

"Now that you ask," Astrial said to Murphy, " have my dolphin friend that followed me here and I need to be in water fairly often, ocean water. Like about 12 times a moon cycle, 28 days. I also have a hawk. Calisto, is his name. He comes and goes and feeds himself." She thought about what she keeps in her room. "hmmmmm," she thought, "where would I string my hammock, and is there a bathtub in the room so I can sleep in water some nights.?"

Dolphin... check. Could probably simply live in the ocean surrounding the islands themselves, unless it got aggressive he doubted the locals would give it a second thought. A hawk, well perhaps a room near the forest would let the bird come and go without too much issue. "Hammock? Most of our rooms come with beds but I'm sure arrangements could be made if you'd prefer to use your own bedding. As for a bathtub large enough to sleep in... I'm not sure our dorms include those but I'm sure you could head over to our marine center and request a tank to use if need be."

He finished his notes and closed the file, setting the thing aside for the moment. "Your food and basic necessities are covered by the school but anything else you want you'll have to find ways to earn money on your own. Don't worry too much about it for now, just get used to the layout of the academy and getting into the rhythm of living here. Would you be interested in having a roommate?"

Murphy paused his questions, giving her some time to mull them over before adding, "Do you have any questions for me? About the school or life on the island in general? I don't live on campus so after this introduction you'll have a hard time reaching me, though one of my... peers would probably be able to help you as well."
