James

Of all the places for James to mess with his powers, he figured this was probably the best option. No one was going to really care if he started a fire in the forbidden forest, right? And if some critter came along he could just throw some fire at it to spook it, and book it out. He was in the sparring club after all.

Taking a deep breath, he'd cover himself in fire, and hurl a fireball towards a nearby tree, hearing it connect with a thud. Next he'd shoot a beam of fire at it, which pretty heavily charred the trunk.

Finally, he'd throw another fireball towards the tree, but his foot would slip and he'd end up igniting some dried foliage, which he quickly stomped out. Only to notice someone staring at him. "Uhh.. Hi?" He asked as the flames on his body extinguished themselves.

Malina knew she'd smelled something burning on today's patrol - exactly the type of thing it was her job to look out for. So she ran out in the direction of the scent - and soon she found the source.

It was a kid, playing with his fire powers.

Malina nearly exploded at him. "What do you think you're doing in my forest? Trying to burn the whole damn place down?" She pressed a few buttons on her bracelet then stomped on over to make sure nothing was still burning.

James

Well, shit. James had been caught basically red handed, and he wasn't about to take his chances trying to outrun whoever this was. "Okay. Fuck. I know this looks really, really bad. But I got it under control." James said, taking a quick look around.

"Look, at worst a few trees got singed." He said motioning towards the tree he'd been throwing fireballs at. "No one got hurt."

Malina gave him an incredulous look. Under control? Really? What he was doing was irresponsible in the extreme.

But fine. She would bite. She stomped on that brush fire a few more times for good measure, then stared him down, hands on hips. James would probably notice the badge she was wearing, which said she was a forest ranger. The nametag said "OLCAN."

"Ok, if it's under control, then where's your fire extinguisher? If you start doing more than singing the trunks, or a brush fire gets too big to stomp out, what's your plan? Fill me in, here."

James

James just blinked. "Look, I can control fire, alright? I've been doing this for a few years, and I'll admit. There's been a few fuck ups." James said with a sigh. "But I've learned, and I've kept it under control here."

He'd cringe a little when she asked where his fire extinguisher was. Slowly, he'd reach into the bushes, and pull out a gallon jug of water. "I got.. uhh.. this." He said holding it up, "It's not exactly a fire extinguisher, but it gets the job done." He said, with a small chuckle. One that quickly faded when he noticed Malina wasn't laughing.

"Alright, look. I really don't wanna be that guy. But just, trust me, I know what I'm doing. But if you want me to leave or whatever, I will."

Malina just stared at James. Her expression only changed slightly throughout his whole monologue - her eyebrows raised a little when she saw the gallon of water James had brought out with him. She was judging him. Holding her tongue.

When he finished, she said: "I suppose you had some kind of plan. But I'm not turning you loose yet." She pulled a pad of paper and a pen out of a pouch attached to her belt. "I'm gonna need you to give me an ID. Or if you don't have one on you, I'll need your first name, last name, and date of birth."

Pen met paper and began to scratch out some sort of report. Malina knew James wasn't going to get in too much trouble, but she wasn't going to stop James from sweating over it just yet.

James

"Uh, yeah sure. It's James Lawsen [birthdate]" James said. He was caught and he wasn't going to try to fight it. At least this time he wasn't nearly burning down a building. He cringed when Malina started writing her report.

"So, how fucked am I here?" He asked, wanting to get an idea of what he was going to have to deal with. At the very least, he was expecting to have to pay some kind of fine, but he figured things could be much, much worse.

Before answering, Malina gave him her most serious face.

"Here's what's going to happen to you, kid. First thing, you're going to want to get the hell out of my forest and stop trying to set it on fire. I can escort you out. Next, your parents or guardians are going to get notified. And finally..."

She'd sit on this note for a second, let him squirm from the anticipation. What horrors would await him?

She cracked a smile, her tone lightening. "We're just gonna make you take a fire safety class. Which is more fun than you're probably expecting it to be. Anything past that is up to whoever's looking after you. Speaking of which - who would that be?"

She couldn't imagine a pup his age not having a parent or a guardian on this island. Though she supposed it was possible.

"We're just gonna make you take a fire safety class."

James froze at that. "That, uhh.. Wouldn't happen to be run by a dragon, would it? Guy named Liun Rukt'In?" If Luin found out about this, James was screwed. He'd already had his fair share of run ins with the fire fighting dragon, and James figured he wouldn't be too happy to find out about James's latest antics.

The question about his dorm parent worked to snap him back to reality. "Uhh, yeah. It's [dorm parent.]"

Malina wrote down that name. She vaguely remembered it being a dorm parent's name - she still had dealings with the school sometimes, for incidents like this.

"I can't say I know anyone called Liun personally," Malina said, "And I know all the other forest rangers. So, probably not."

She noted down a few more things.

"What happened between you and this Liun character? If you don't mind me asking." If she had to guess, this probably wasn't his first run-in with the law over fire safety.
