What is a Banshee's Scream?

The hospital room was sterile, strange. When she was on-campus, the little girl was usually treated on-the-scene, unless it was a seizure longer than five minutes - and the one she had just woken up out of had been going on for at least ten, until medication had been distributed via an I.V. in her left arm.

The little girl woke up shrieking, shouting, crying. This was not the infirmary, or her bed at home - or even the floor of the daycare. It was strange. She was trying to jerk the I.V. out of her arm.

The child could hear a doctor in the room - asking questions in a quiet voices; quiet voices were bad. "Son, do you know her last name? We need to contact her parents - and see if she has medical records here. Do you know if she has epilepsy? If she's on medication?"

The doctor blatantly ignored the screaming, crying child - at least until she started jerking at the wires attached to her little body; she wasn't even in her own clothes! This made the toddler cry harder.

He slipped a sedative from his pocket as he tried to soothe the girl - after a few moments it became clear that the child was not going to become complacent, and he moved to sedate her.

The child, half-Banshee, half-Unknown began to shriek - a screech only a Banshee would have. She couldn't do it always; but she was stressed, frightened, scared enough to try to hurt the men in the room with her. She just wanted her mommy and daddy.

Murphy winced in his chair as Faeyt screamed like some sort of demon. "No, I told you, I don't bloody well know her last name. She's a student at Starlight, shouldn't you be able to contact the damn school and find out? I told you, her first name is Faeyt, F-A-T-E." He reeled it back a bit, trying not to be pissed at the doctor for what had happened.

As soon as they'd stepped thought he vortex some sort of alarm had gone off, probably thanks to his own stress levels. The next thing he'd known he was being restrained by a huge security guard who demanded to know who he was and whether he was armed or not. At that point Murphy had snapped under the stress and made the poor decision to bite the man.

He didn't remember much beyond the man pulling the taser from his side and zapping him with it. He remembered feeling his whole body seizing up, veins burning as if liquid fire was being forced through them. He was aware of his own heart skipping several beat, and his vision exploding with fireworks of white and violet. When he'd come to he had been restrained in a chair in the security office. After some severe questioning and lecturing on the potential repercussions of assaulting staff he was finally released, without an apology, to stagger his way to go see Faeyt.

Seeing the doctor ready the sedatives so readily grated on Murphy, he knew firsthand what the effects of those pills could be like... a fucking nightmare for someone who was already experiencing horrible hallucinations. "Ease off on the pills, doc. Why don't you go ask the goddamn academy and I'll watch over the little one yeah? She's already restrained."

A nurse called out from the lobby, "Sir! She's epileptic - Faeyt Chord - daughter of Sai Chord - four years old. I'm calling him in now." The nurse made a short phone call to someone at the academy, who promised to send Sai.

The doctor stilled, needle in hand. "Hey, how about you go calm down?" He snapped, furrowing his brow. "Call her physician - as well, nurse." The woman called back, "That was who I just talked too - she said she would bring the father and come along herself. It seems young Miss Chord has had a lot of time in the institutions infirmary. She's a regular there."

The woman disappeared again, doctor following - as he left he murmured, "Keep that girl calm, boy. It appears that she might have Banshee in her." The scream had given that away. It had irritated the man's sensitive hearing, making him quicker to react with a sedative rather than reasoning.

Murphy glanced at the needle, then back at the doctor. "If she's that dangerous, mind if I take the needle in case something really bad goes down?" he walked over to the girl and pulled up a chair next to her, and sat down as if she wasn't thrashing about and screaming at a pitch that set his teeth on edge. It was hard to focus on anything, every screech the little girl emitted caused his vision to swim slightly. He'd heard of banshees in fairy tails. Spirits of death whose wails could only by heard by the soon dead. Fortunately, this wasn't the first sign of impending doom he'd experienced. Despite his propensity for misfortune he always managed to escape alive.

He reached out and took her hand again, waiting for a lull in the screeching before speaking. "It's okay Fae, I'm here. You remember me? Murphy?" he winced as another shriek caused his ears to ring. "I'm your friend. It'll be okay hun, just... just fine." God, this was why he avoided children for the most part, he was shit at comforting them when his own shit luck affected them too. "They're calling your mommy, the librarian right? And your daddy too, you can hold onto me until they get here. I'm not going to let them touch you."

He glanced back at the doctor, hoping he'd give them some space. Even when not injured, medical facilities creeped the hell out of him. And that was BEFORE his power started screwing with the machines.

That was when a frightened siren came running in like a wrecking ball. He was still in his work outfit as he was blazing past the doctors and patients in the hospital. He moved at lightning speed the moment he heard the news from a colleague. Just imagine the heart attack he had when he heard his adorable daughter was hospitalized while he was cutting the grass. He nearly fell off his lawn mower! His eyes widen with dread while his heart pounded at incredible speed. What happened to his baby girl?!

He burst into the patient room and went scrambling to Faeyt's side. He frantically signed to her.

"Don't worry, Daddy's here now!"

He totally outran the physician. It wasn't like he was trying to; it was just he was THAT worried over his daughter. The Papa Bear instincts kicked in hard. He finally noticed the unknown man that was standing by Faeyt. He certainly was not a doctor because he wasn't at all in doctor attire. He glanced over in his direction and signed to him as well.

"Who are you? What happened to my daughter?!"

Sai's face wasn't vicious, but he was definitely suspicious of the stranger by his girl's side. He wanted to know what happened and who he was.

Faeyt shrieked when her father startled her, hands covering her mouth. She blinked up at him, rubbing her face as she jerked at the tubes, causing the machines to start chirping. She had managed to free herself from Murphy's grasp, and the heart monitor connections, and was standing up in the bed, jerking at the I.V.

"Off! Off!" She wailed, stamping her feet. "Off! Off!" She was shouting the word, clearly in the process of getting ready to cry, or scream. Children's cries were often quite loud; but despite the lore - a Banshee's scream could be heard by all those near, and a half-Banshee with mixed blood? That just made it worse.

The physician that usually saw to Faeyt stood in the doorway, panting softly as she breathed out, "Fae- Faeyt. Put that back." She scolded gently, moving forward to shove the stranger aside and settle beside of the bed to get the girl to sit. She had been right on Sai's heels, though he had outrun her.

"Hey, you." She mused, poking the child's nose. "Mister Feralla says you had a really bad seizure, Faeyt. Is that true?" The child bobbed her head slowly, staring between her doctor and her father, fingers still picking at the I.V. "Well, you see that little tube? It's called an I.V., and it gives you medicine to help you." She demonstrated with a spare I.V. and needle, on herself, grinning slightly. "See? Nothing to worry about. When you're all better, we'll take it out."

Faeyt glared up at her daddy, shouting, "Off!" She didn't like strange places; not at all! She had hardly slept the first month she lived with her father. The doctor continued to talk to the little girl, "I heard you scream - Mister Feralla wants to know if I can take some blood so we can do some tests."

The little girl stared - scooting across the bed as far as the I.V. would let her. She gave her arm a good jerk to tug the I.V. out; and despite the pain of the I.V. being removed improperly, the little girl made to climb out of the bed and wrap herself around her father. The physician glanced to the father, furrowing her brow. "Can I draw some blood? There'll be paperwork to fill out - but I want to have her epilepsy retested," the teacher glanced to the boy in the room, frowning. "Faeyt, are you bringing home strays again?" She scoffed lightly, as she stood and removed her test I.V., tossing it into the garbage.

Several things happened in very quick succession, when the man burst in screaming waving his hands about Murphy had spun, hand shooting into the pocket of his jacket to the small blade he kept there. The following momentary pause had given him the time to look the guy over. A gardener of some sort, hadn't Faeyt said something about her father being a gardener at the school? Well, at least he seemed worried for his daughter rather than instantly assuming it was Murphy's fault like he'd expected him to.

He'd begun to answer when Faeyt herself woke up, and began freaking the hell out. He didn't really blame her, hospitals were rarely a pleasant place to wake up in after blacking out. She'd immediately torn herself away from him and began thrashing about, trying to rip the needle out of her vein. THEN when he'd tried to respond to her the physician had come charging in, shoving him aside to try to comfort her, she was probably her regular doctor, who had the fucking nerve to call him a stray.

He closed his eyes a moment and reviewed. His head hurt from where he'd banged it on the fire escape, there was dried blood on his elbow and knee from where he'd dove to catch the falling girl. His vision swam from time to time and he wasn't sure he could really feel the tips of his fingers... thanks to the damn taser. People kept shoving him aside and telling him what to do, and to top it all off he hadn't eaten since... yesterday? Two days ago?

Instead of answering any of the questions or responding to any of the shoves or glances, he sighed. Stepping away from the doctor and Faeyt he nodded to the father and headed quietly for the door. He spotted a vending machine and made a beeline for it, and it was blissfully cooperative when he fed in his wrinkled dollar bill and began devouring the small candy bar it dispensed.

He wanted to snap. He wanted to simply give in to the annoyance and anger that had been bubbling up since he'd gotten onto this damn island. He wanted to let his powers just surge out in a wave of disaster and damn the consequences. Instead, he focused on the candy.

This was a hospital, and not just any hospital but one that catered to individuals with unique needs and strict requirements in order to survive. Even in a regular hospital under calm circumstances those machines tended to act up around him, if he lost it now people could die. So he continued to think only about the simple act of eating. Bite, chew, chew, chew, chew, swallow, repeat.
