Finnegan sat in a nice, garden patio area of a cafe, shaded but with sunlight filtered through the leaves of the trees leaning over the space from above. He'd already ordered himself an iced tea with lemon and blueberries, along with a fresh salad. He felt quite perky. He was here today for leisure, but also, to meet up with an old student.

Jett Lavelle. Finn had been the one to pick him up, back when the boy had been just fifteen, and far more scrappy. He was twenty-seven now. How time flied! Finn always enjoyed strolling down memory lane, as well as getting updates on the present and future. Jett had graduated (with his Master's in Criminal Justice, goodness gracious, Finn was so proud!), so it'd been a while since they'd had the chance to catch up. Properly catch up, too, not just low effort chit-chat. After running into him recently, Finn figured he should make time. Jett had always been quite the sweet young man to him, after all. A troublemaker, but sweet. And Finn tended to feel a lot of warmth towards those he brought in and helped settle down in Starlight Academy and Manta Carlos.

Finn waited for the other to arrive, eating his salad lazily, catching the rays of sun that streamed in. He had a bag of home grown tomatoes and a small bouquet of flowers set on the table, for a gift, and a book that he had open, reading to pass the time. It was a crime thriller, which he thought was fitting for who he was going to see. He liked to find humor in the small touches. Good book, though, enough to have him invested in grit and drama even on a sunny afternoon.

It was one of those rare occasions when Jett was actually nervous about a meeting. Granted, it didn't show as he strolled through the patio in search of Finn. But, Jett had taken extra special care to look more adult and responsible than he normally was. A nice black button up shirt with slacks and a belt. Hair combed back and facial hair trimmed. Not so scruffy today.

Whenever Jett thought of Finn, he recalled a time hiding in the back alley of cities, barely scraping by and attempting to hide under the radar. He hadn't known why some smiling man approached him, so gentle and tender. Jett hadn't known something kind (not even in himself) for as long as he recalled. It was enough to catch him off guard, and really, it didn't take a whole lot of convincing for Jett Lavelle to run away to Manta Carlos.

Back then, he'd called himself Lewis, Lewis, and no last name. It was Finn who had helped Jett come up with the name he had no and had asked no real questions about it. That was a trait Jett had always appreciated about Finn.

When he sat next to his old scout and guidance counselor, Jett actually felt normal. Like he was fifteen again, only this time far less sullen and way more talkative. Now, he didn't try to creep Finn out or make lewd remarks to waitresses in passing. He just sat quietly and enjoyed the normalcy of Finn reading across from him.

"Good book?"

Finnegan's face lit right up like the sun he was bathing in when he saw Jett, all neat and tidy, looking ever so mature. Was that extra effort for his sake? Finn was flattered, and impressed! Despite Jett's certain boyish looks, he'd grown, it was striking to someone who had known him as long as Finn. The differences were striking.

His smile for Jett was very soft, when he sat down with him. He put a bookmark in his book, and set it aside, giving his attention to Jett instead. He leaned over to half-hug him with one arm since they were both seated, squeezing, then pulled back. "Hello, Jett. You look wonderful, goodness, let me see you!" Finn peered at him and fussed a little, brushing invisible dust from his shoulders, booping his nose. "Very handsome."

"It's been so long since we did this, hasn't it? You recall the days in my office, and the gardens? Of course you do, what am I saying, you're still young, your memory is perfectly fine." Finn grinned. "Now, please, tell me everything! What you've been doing all this time, are you working, dating, doing well? Indulge a curious old man."

He tapped a finger on his lip. "It is a good book, yes, but you're the real star here, spotlight's yours, dear."

Jett couldn't help himself; he gave Finn a genuine, radiant smile as the older man inspected his clothes and booped his nose. Had it been anyone else, Jett would have snarked at them, or leered. Made them uncomfortable. Made them wanna run. He had never been like that with Finn.

Despite himself, Jett even looked away with crimson coloring his cheeks. Generally, when someone asked him to talk about himself, the man would have gone off on a series of insane stories that told nothing deeper about who he was. Jett didn't like giving people information about him. Information was power.

"The days in your office had been... awkward," Jett laughed good-naturedly. Awkward because Jett hadn't known what to say -- hadn't wanted to say anything at all. It had been strange, but it grew comfortable over time. Finn was willing just to sit with Jett in the beginning, let him draw or (more likely) study and read. "And the gardens, we both learned I have no green thumb. What's the opposite of green thumb?"

Jett took a sip of some water a waitress had set on the table beside him. "The usual," he said with a wicked grin, before softening to add more detail. "I still hang out with Tobias York; you remember him? We're dating. We're in a polyamorous relationship with another man named Jeje, who I live with.

"Starting up a law firm, because I figure I might as well. But my usual jobs, well, you know."
Jett didn't have to go into detail there. Finn knew because Jett had always told him everything. Jett supposed that was a... father figure? Jett didn't like that idea. He'd killed his father, after all.
