"Thanks for the coffee."

Suffice it to say, Jacob was not expecting Lenn's biting tone when she returned. It wiped the smile from his face in an instant and he wanted to curl up again somewhere else. It hurt a little more because the wounds were still fresh and his tears had only begun to dry. Taking a sip from the cup, Jacob quietly went back to packing up like he had been before she returned, his face cold but his eyes sad.

"Nothing. I just, uh, wanted to ask what we should do with the Liquid Dream and our bloody clothes."

He didn't even turn to face her as he spoke with a monotone voice, and simply jerked a thumb over at the pen cartridges and the bag of soiled of clothes respectively. An awkward air of tension filled the room.

Jacob was back in his own head in an instant, relationship anxiety kicking-in immediately. Emotions were running high and feelings were sensitive, so he supposed there was little blame for her tone. Sadness and anger usually traveled hand-in-hand. Where one went, the other was sure to follow. Where she had initially been overtaken by sadness at their experiences, shared and individual, he surmised that anger and jealousy had quickly flowed-in. And why would she not be? He had fucked another woman. And who was he kidding? No amount of apologies or tears was going to make that go away. Offering more only made him look guilty, and was futile at best. What was he to do now? Nothing. He was just going to have to live with his actions.

(Un)fortunately, Jacob also had some experience with in that kind of situation too. While the circumstances were different, the mood and atmosphere reminded him of when his relationship with his ex-wife started breaking down. It was a terrible feeling, like walking the plank. The inevitable was coming, and nothing he could say or do was going to stop it. It made him want to punch himself, or cry again.

Like everything that happened in this relationship, this was something new for Lenn. Of course, betrayal was nothing new in her previous line of work considering the people she had to deal with, but this time it was different. He was drugged. But him, of all people! He didn't mean to do what he did. He did it tho'. He loved her, she knew it. He fucked another woman; perhaps the worst of 'em all! She quickly squashed her conflicting emotions the moment she saw that smile fade. Aw crap... She didn't mean to sound so harsh. A subtle grunt came from her when he turned away to keep himself busy. He probably would have put the lampshade over his head if that helped to avoid her gaze. Was she glaring at him?

Shit... It was aggravating that this whole situation made her extremely uncomfortable. It was completely out of her hands. It wasn't like she could simply brush it under the rug. All she did was practically have him spill the beans and...That was it. She ran off to have a moment to herself in which she couldn't even have that thanks to some devious snake. She didn't even have time to clear her head and think rationally about this since she had to think about how the way Jacob liked his coffee and what she was going to do with--

Oh, he was thinking the same thing regarding the 'evidence'. "Don't worry about it, oy'll take care of it," she said quickly, almost cutting him off. Dammit! She could feel the anger bubble up in her wounded chest. Fuck, shit, fuck fuck. Instead of 'taking care of it', she stormed into the bathroom and slammed it harder than she intended. the bandages were torn from her chest and she resisted the urge to scratch at the healing wounds. Okay, her wounds were healing up fine. Now what? She couldn't put her fist through the wall because that required her to pay more money.

This was stupid. She told him to tell her what was bothering and he did. Now she seething and she was running out of things to do. So what did she end up doing? She sat in the spare chair once again, taking up one of the pens and twirling it between her fingers. She sat forward, elbows upon knees and just watched him as he did his best to avoid her for the time being. Her foot tapped furiously against the carpeted floor...For about a good agonizing twenty minutes.

Suddenly, she slammed the pen down on the table and got up from the seat, closing the distance between them with a furious pace. She turned him around and shoved Jacob against the wall. Even though she was injured, she was still strong as hell...And angry. For a minute or two, she looked right into his eyes and her own gaze softened just a little. " 'Oy...can't even git mad at you..." she drawled on slowly.

The silence was perhaps the worst part of any relationship-related squabble. It was the empty space was filled with the worst thoughts and feelings, feeding on themselves and growing larger by the minute. With no one speaking up and letting the other know what they were thinking, either person was free to concoct the worst possible exchanges and feelings. It was a lack of communication, but there was nothing to communicate. Everything had been said, and the only thing left was to wait for a reply.

Jacob could not speak for Lenn, but he was slowly wearing himself down to the point where he kinda wished he had another of Liquid Dream. In his mind, he was blaming himself for everything, and comparing it all to when he divorced his first wife. It was all his fault again, and he would never be able to find someone to be by his side again. After Lenn, he would not even bother trying anymore. He would just live his life and give all of his remaining love to his daughter, until she grew up and left his life too.

He flinched when she slammed the bathroom door, but did not look up from whatever he was doing. Alone, he stopped and just stood in place. He tried thinking of something to say, but everything seemed inappropriate or not worth it. Fighting back was pointless. He might have saved her, but he also screwed another woman. He could try pleading, but that was desperate and childish. He could try just ignoring it or moving on, but that was counter to working it all out. There was no escape.

As soon as he heard the door open again, he went about packing up again, and he continued for what seemed like an eternity. All the while he felt Lenn glaring at him, and he wished she would just up say or do something. Even if it was as pointless as hitting him, at least it would tell him what she was feeling.

After awhile, he started running out of things to do, and he contemplated leaving the room with the bags until she was ready to go. He flinched again when he heard a slam, and he yelped when he was forcibly turned around and pinned. He was scared.

"L-Lenn! I'm sorry! Truly! H-Hit me if you need to, but just know that I still love you. The woman meant nothing to me, and if I could go back and avoid her injection, I would. I would do everything in my power to not be such a helpless fool and get myself restrained like that. I would man-up and be the person you needed me to be in that moment. I would stay out of your past and not push. Anything! Just so that--"

His desperate rambling was cut off by Lenn. His fear slowly drained, and a bit of his sadness came back. What relief he should have felt was taken away by concern.

"N-No... You can. It's not wrong of you to get mad at me... I just... I just don't want to lose what we have..."

That was probably...the wrong approach too. She could see the fear in his eyes the moment she had him up against the wall. It looked like he was prepared to recieve a beatdown, but she wasn't even close to doing so. That would most definitely end the relationship there. No relationship should ever have violence...and Jacob already had his share of it. Hell, she thought this entire endeavor would have ended things period, but what he said next after he cut her off... It formed a lump in her throat. He...did? Well...She wanted it too. She didn't want for them to go through all this hardship and then just split up. The anger began to gradually subside. She just wished this all was nothing but a bad dream.

"Oy' don' want to eitha'..." her shoulders sank, "This...Wot happened to you...It's my fault." There. She finally said it. Still didn't make her feel better though. " 'Oy should have planned things out betta'...Should have had you stay behind...Oy' dunno. Something--anythin' to prevent wot happened!..." Now her eyes were getting watery again. Now oy' look'it you an' all I see is... "I'm sorry..." This was the first time she had actually failed someone. It was heart-wrenching. "You had to go through ...all a'that..." 'cause of me... Her knees felt weak and her chest ready to burst. She dropped onto her knees before him and just...cried. Pathetically.

Fault was a tricky thing when it came to relationships. In most cases, it was fairly clear cut where fault lied, and those were typically more mundane situations. But then there were a few cases where it got more complicated considering that a relationship involved two people interacting in a complex and intimate way. Lenn thought the fault was her's because it was her life and her world that Jacob had fallen into. But Jacob also knew that he was the one who insisted on coming along, against her better judgement.

In the end, placing blame was not a constructive exercise. The more important thing was that they were both aware of what the other was feeling, and that they had both gone through some tough times in the last week. Both of them.

Jacob caught Lenn immediately and followed her to the before. There, he held her tightly as they both had another moment together. It broke his heart to see her crying so hard, and even he teared up again. Together they let it out, held tightly to one another as Jacob gently rocked from side to side, comforting the two of them.

He let her cry until she started slowing down, and he spoke quietly.

"Lenn. Remember what I said before we left? We would do this together. We fought together. We cried together. We walked into the darkness together. And we will come out the other side... together... That's what matters."

Though he was confident in his words, his shaky voice showed that he was broken up by all of it too. He knew that, just because he was down now, he was not going to stay down forever, especially with Lenn at his side.

"I love you, Lenn."
