Kinta muttered a few words under his breath, and the flames around her went out. "DO NOT draw attention to yourself. It would be a major mistake neither of us would live through. Now come on. I've shown you what there is to see here. We need to go in one more District, before we head back to Life. And STAY CLOSE to me this time." He headed for the next Gate, knowing this one would be the most challenging of all.

Kintaru swore as a loud, sibilant hiss was heard behind them. He spun on his heel, only to get bowled over by a Rester. He struggled to the surface of the river, fighting to reach the surface before he was swept through the gate. When he surfaced, the snakelike undead creature had its coils wrapped tightly around her, the scythe pinned to her side. "Damn you girl. You don't understand how Death works," he swore. He raised his blade over his head, and brought it down hard on the snake's coils. Nothing happened. "My blade won't even harm it. What makes you think that your scythe can?"

He pulled Saraneth and Kibeth. "Damn you, foul creature of the Abyss. Go back into the darkness of Death. RELEASE HER!" he cried, Saraneth ringing loudly in harmony with the sounds of Kibeth. The snake-like figure merely tightened its hold on her, and refused to let go.

Kintaru swore as she went unconscious. "It'll be better this way, anyhow." His hand darted in front of him, his fingers dancing, leaving fiery trails in the air in the form of letters. "Tikou, sulenu, SUMATKA!" he called out, and a jet of pure fire raced toward the Rester. The fire raced around the edges of the Rester, edging it with fire, fire that did not harm Aelmyr. It was balefire.

The Rester let out a hideous scream, and released Aelmyr, dropping her into the river. Kintaru dove for her, pulling her up out of the water. His free hand shot out, tracing more runes in the air. "Dranth, creonis, DENUMAU!" A wall of pure force slammed into the Rester, forcing it through the Sixth Gate. Kintaru hoisted Aelmyr onto his shoulder, and began running for the Fifth Gate, heading for the border between Death and Life.

***Minutes later, at the border***

Kintaru slowed to a stop, taking several deep breaths, trying to calm his breathing. Once he managed to do so, he felt for the border, ripped it open, and went black for several seconds.

When he came to, he was sprawled on the ground, Aelmyr across from him, out of it completely. He swore, jumped to his feet, and hurried to her side. He shook her gently. "Aelmyr. Come on, wake up...."

Her breathe was slow and her brow ruffled in pain. Her once pearl white dress dressed from her broken wings. Her silver hair a dark crimson.

"Ah, cripes," muttered Kintaru. She was out of it, big time. He placed his hand on her shoulder, reaching for the Charter. He had to struggle this time to reach it, but once he did, the familiar flow of pure energy through his body made it easier to keep a hold of it. He pulled out all the runes he knew that were good with healing, mending, and waking, binding them together with, not one, not two, but three Master Runes. He shuddered as the power that he had just invoked coursed fiercely through his body.

He collapsed, his eyes staying clear long enough to see all of her wounds heal, before he blacked out entirely.

Kintaru shuddered slightly, and opened his eyes with a groan of pain. He looked up, right into Aelmyr's eyes. "Apparently... that chance I took... was worth it." He sighed, and pushed himself upright. "Are you okay? Your wings..." He glanced at the tips...
