Sorcha jolted when Naka asked her the question, and as a result sloshed hot tea over the sides of the cap and onto her hand and the table. She set down the top, grabbed the end of her shirt wiped off her hand, all the while looking at him and wondering why he would want to know about her. She just automatically assumed he would want to know the same thing they all did around here, what powers they had and how strong they were.

"My name is Sorcha Corliss, there isn't much to tell" She looked back down at her shirt and then at the table, shrugged and sat up enough so that she could use the bottom of it to wipe off the table. Her mother would have skinned her if she had saw her do that, manners were extremely important to Elphrina Corliss. Sorcha sat back down picked up the tea again and took a sip enjoying the minty taste. She then looked at Naka patiently waiting to see where they went from here.

Nakata shook his head fervently. He was glad that he could converse with her in japanese. It was often difficult to explain things to people who did not speak and understand it.
"Well for starters, you can tell me where you learned to speak Japanese. Additionally, how did you end up here? Perhaps even are you single?" He asked her with a narrowed look from his violet eyes. All three questions were bold from different angles, and while he had asked all three to get an idea on how to approach her. Three questions, four possible responses, he wondered what she would say or do and he sipped from the thermos just before taking a bite from his rice ball.

Sorcha stopped with the chopsticks half way to her mouth, tilted her head and looked at Naka with suspicion in her eyes. Now why would he want to know those things, well , she could see the first two but the last one? Nobody has wanted to know that before, in fact, she was pretty sure that it never occurred to anybody that she wouldn't be single.

She set down the chopsticks, took another sip of tea and wondered how much should she tell him. Taking a deep breath she started to answer, "My father is a liason between law enforcement and the super hero community, he needs many languages in his job and thought we should know it as well" Sorcha turned her head and looked out the window so that Naka would not see her deal with that brief burst of sadness when she thought of her family.

Turning back around, she looked at Naka and although she didn't realize it her voice changed into a flat monotone, "I came here like everyone else, I was sent here to train and advance my powers. And to answer your last question, why would i be anything but single?"

Reserved and refined, apparently she didn't like sharing personal information that involved her present.
"Why does anyone ever ask if someone is single. As for how you ended up here, not everyone gets put here like that. I was kidnapped, watched my father kill my mother, watched my father get killed by strangers, and was eventually tranquilized and brought here." He explained, his eyes suddenly becoming somewhat fierce for a moment. Still, his features softened after a moment and he flashed her a smile as he grabbed another piece of sushi and another sip of tea.

The conversation was going pretty well so far. He hadn't really considered enjoying lunch today, but a precog in his home economics class had warned him "make enough food for two today and be ready to share." That was all the kid had told him, but he had gotten enough to guess that it was probably going to happen around lunch time. The Haitian kid often came to him with some painting or another about something that didn't make any sense to him, but that happened later that day or that week even.
"You might have already answered my question with your retort, but, you are single right?" He said with a smile and after a few moments of silence.

Sorcha heard Naka explain how he arrived at the Academy in one sentence and she thought she saw something in his eyes. Whatever it was, it disappeared fast enough and all she was left with was a commiserating pain for the loss of his family. She wondered if he often took those memories out and examined them over and over like she did.

She saw the smile he flashed her and wondered again why he was asking her about being single. She never had a boyfriend and from what she heard, probably didn't want or need one. Oh, she thought about boys alright, but most boys were turned off by her height and her demeanor. She stared at Naka once again and after a pause nodded her head in the affirmative to his last question.

Naka smiled at her answer. For all her "piss and vinegar," she seemed awfully reserved on the subject of her personal life. Strangely enough, one translation of "Naka" was "relationship" and while he knew that the kanji for his name did not indicate such a thing, he typically didn't spell the kanji for his name out (The kanji being "仲違い" meaning "discord"), so he figured he would use it as a pick up line.
"You know, one translation of 'Naka' is 'relationship.'" He said using another word to clarify what he meant in japanese.
"Are you normally this receptive? If so I don't know why you wouldn't have one already." He said. One thing typically left out of his reputation was his ability to flirt, an ability that typically did not get noticed because he didn't typically speak to people in Japanese. He figured it interesting the fact that he tended to get along with the outcasts and those that cordoned themselves from the rest of the student body despite being mildly popular himself.

Sorcha sat and observed Naka as he drank some more tea, she actually found it easy to be in the same room with him. That in itself, was unusual, she preferred to be alone and being around people always led to expectations of social banter which she was not comfortable with.

When Naka explained the meaning of his name Sorcha shrugged, sat back, putting her hands on her legs, replied "And mine means radiant in Gaelic, what is your point exactly?" He continued to sit there and smile at her and that is when the rest of what he said registered, "Wait, are you being sarcastic with me? You think the only reason I don't have a boyfriend is I don't get all gushy and wordy with people?"

And to think she was just starting to like him! She stood up and started walking to the door, and although she was hurt on some level that she couldn't even finish a conversation with someone, she stopped and turned around, "Thank you for sharing your lunch". She stood at the door for a bit staring at him while she silently thought about going back to that neglected room where she really belonged.

Naka shook his head as she stood up to leave but he didn't stand up, and he took a sip of his tea before speaking.
"I didn't mean anything even remotely disrespectful. If you only see everything in black and white and you turn your back on people who honestly try to spend time with you, you'll fail. This world is already dark enough without needless hatred and mistaken feelings of trepidation and anger at words that, at least in this case, were meant as a compliment. He said all at once before taking yet another sip of tea and reaching for another rice ball. He said everything in a calm tone, never yelling, never showing anger at all. His words were sincere and he looked directly into her eyes as he said this but his smile had disappeared.
"There's more tea and you're welcome to seconds if you've changed your mind." He said, his smile reappearing though less so.

Sorcha shook herself from her thoughts to hear the beginning of Naka's comments. She took a couple of steps back into the room and listened as he told her calmly that he meant no disrespect. As she listened to him finish she was ashamed that she had once again over reacted to what was apparently an honest comment.

She walked over to him and looked down, "My apologies for misunderstanding your comment, I find myself quite often not listening to what is really being said but attaching my own thoughts to the words of others. I would like to join you for those seconds if you don't mind" And hoping that the change of subject would help her hide her embarrassment she commented, The rice balls are quite good, did you make them?"

Sorcha sat back down and looked up shyly at Naka wondering if she ruined any chance of maybe making a friend, he didn't seem put off, but then again so many were and just didn't feel the need to tell her, they just ignored her.

Nakata nodded to her and was happy for her to sit back down.
"I did make them, it's the only reason for me to take home economics class. Actually I purposely fail that particular class every year so that I can retake it and thus avoid school lunch. Thank you for enjoying them with me." He said sincerely. He was not the slightest bit put off and he was more surprised that she had returned to sit down and eat with him again than anything else. Still he was happy to have her company and was happy to be able to speak in his native language with someone at this school.
"I don't suppose you could teach me to speak English better?" He asked her earnestly.
