A sound somewhere between a laugh and a mrow left the NEK0 as the first questions were jotted down in her notebook. “Well, Kiyomi has a looot to say. She at least thinks, she can begin with a summary?”

Her first actual answer came out more coherently than most of her thoughts. The truth was, she’d had a lot of time to think on her life before the island. In therapy, for one thing. For another, the people at the clinic had done their best to explain it to her too. The subject also popped back into her head at random times during the day; in the shower, walking to and from school, and other idle moments.

Deep breath.

“Okay. So! NEK0 happened because other people wanted us, which means like other NEK0, Kiyomi had an Owner. Owner was not mean to Kiyomi,” she added thoughtfully, nibbling the tip of her glittery pencap. “Did not hurt her. Which means, he was not as bad as other NEK0 went through. But, she is learning that he was not… a good caretaker? Oh, she lived in a nice room. But, very small. Got tired of catfood. Got bored, too.”

Was that it? Oh! There was one other thing. “Kiyomi was not a person. Not to Owner. She was a doll, and also, a cat.” Toy, pet, distraction, there were a lot of other words to describe it. Something that could be picked up and put down whenever one liked. It drew an uneasy chuckle out of her. “She is still getting used to being a person.”

Here, she paused, ears aprick as she took in Natalie’s reaction.

While Nat’s posture still held the same relaxed, inviting look she’d had upon meeting Kiyomi, it was clear she was treating this conversation with a slightly more professional attitude. She let Kiyomi speak without interrupting, attention focused squarely on her, not even looking down as she scribbled the occasional small note onto her pad. Even if she kept her more serious and attentive expression, the same curiosity was still there in her eyes.

Nat knew what it was like to be a pet, after all, she’d spent decades as one. But her situation wasn’t the same, she didn’t have the same awareness she had now, wasn’t the same person she was now, not to mention that she’d certainly been treated better than the average Nek0. She’d been perfectly content as a housecat before she’d changed, and once she had, it took far longer for her to really internalise everything with her newfound sapience. But the Nek0 had always had sapience, and their treatment had clearly affected them all greatly.

Well, Nat’s interest clearly went beyond professional curiosity. She didn’t know what insight she thought she’d gain by speaking to them, maybe she really was just worried about the youngsters. Either way, she could get a story while satisfying her own whims.

“It takes time,” Nat said with a nod. “After spending your whole life treated like you aren’t. Even after you’re told you aren’t just a pet or some animal, its not as simple as just changing how you think just like that.

The waiter returned briefly to place the drinks on the table. Nat waited until they’d left, sipping from her cup of coffee before continuing.

“So, you must have been sent away from your Owner to end up at the trading post. Do you know why he did that?"
